A 34-year-old suspected kidnapper was arrested and a victim rescued following a high-speed chase in Benoni, Ekurhuleni on Sunday.

EMPD Intervention Unit officers became suspicious of a white Mercedes-Benz carrying five men and attempted to stop it on New Modder Road.

The driver sped off, leading police on a dangerous chase through Benoni, ignoring traffic signals and driving against traffic.

The pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed into a drainage structure at the corner of Woburn Avenue and Swan Street.

Three suspects fled on foot, while the driver and another occupant were arrested.

Police discovered that one of the vehicle’s occupants was a kidnapping victim who alleged he had been abducted at gunpoint from his home, assaulted and forced into the vehicle.

Officers also recovered a 9mm firearm with a filed-off serial number and nine bank cards from different financial institutions.

The victim was treated at the scene and taken to hospital.

The suspect faces charges of kidnapping, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and reckless and negligent driving, while efforts continue to trace the remaining suspects.

THREE SUSPECTS PULLED A GUN TO STEAL ALCOHOL IN TWO BUSINESSES

Three men are wanted in connection with two business robbery cases reported in the Kathorus region. The suspects are believed to be part of a gang of about ten individuals allegedly involved in targeting businesses across the area.

Community members have been urged to help police by identifying the suspects and reporting any information about their whereabouts to law enforcement as investigations continue.
