ANC Women’s League Bokone Bophirima Women’s Day statement
The African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) in Bokone Bophirima joins millions of South African women in celebrating Women’s Day.

This day reminds us of the bravery of thousands of our country’s women from all walks of life who on 9 August 1956 marched to the Union Buildings against the unjust pass laws imposed by the apartheid regime.

Their hard work was not limited to this one day, as many of them were involved in the struggle against apartheid and inequality before this historic day. As we celebrate Women’s Day, let us emulate these gallant fighters and continue the struggle that is yet to be fully won.

This year’s Women’s Day coincides with the centenary of Mama Albertina Sisulu, who is one of the female freedom fighters to have left a permanent mark in the struggle for the emancipation of women. We take a left from the book of her life and agree with the government’s theme for the day: “100 Years of Albertina Sisulu, Woman of Fortitude: Women United in Moving South Africa Forward".
While we celebrate Women’s Day, we as the ANC Women’s League are doing so with a lump in our throat because of the increasing gender-based violence in our province and the country.

A 66-year-old woman, Mme Meisie Moatshe from Ramokokastad was found dead yesterday after she had gone missing since 15 June. In another case, also yesterday, 47-year-old Veronica Bulwane was killed by her boyfriend in Mabele-a-Podi village.

May the souls of Moatshe and Bulwane rest in eternal peace. It is because of women who continue to become victims of gender-based violence that we must never rest until this battle and many others are won and women can live safely and peacefully alongside their male counterparts and enjoy the fruits of freedom.
