Wildlife Wednesday: Giants of the Grasslands 🦌🌾
Meet the eland — the largest antelope in Africa, yet one of the gentlest. Weighing in at nearly a ton, these bushveld giants move with surprising grace and agility.
At Sparta, they’re often spotted in the early hours, peacefully grazing in open grasslands. Their spiral horns, shaggy dewlaps, and quiet strength make them unforgettable.
🌿 Diet: Grasses, leaves, fruits, and herbs — adaptable grazers and browsers
👶 Gestation: About 9 months
🏃 Fun Fact: Don’t let their size fool you — eland can leap over 2 meters high from a standstill
👥 Herd Size: 10–50, sometimes over 100 in seasonal herds
Eland bring calm power to the savanna — a must-see on any horseback safari.
