Yesterday, Mayor Cllr P. Stuurman of Matatiele Local Municipality and MEC Bukiwe Fanta from the Department of Social Developmentand Cllr L. Leeu visited the Madlala family at their home in Maluti ward 02 to offer their deepest condolences on the passing of Ms Khayakazi Madlala.

Khayakazi Madlala was an award-winning international soprano and classical singer, and a proud daughter of Matatiele whose talent and voice carried far beyond our borders. She inspired many through her dedication to her craft and her representation of South Africa on the global stage.

During the visit, Mayor Cllr P. Stuurman assured the family that the Matatiele Local Municipality will provide support throughout this period of mourning. The Municipality stands with the Madlala family and pledges its full support during this difficult time.

We join the community in mourning the loss of a distinguished daughter of Matatiele. Our thoughts are with the Madlala family, friends, and all who were touched by Khayakazi’s gift and spirit.

May her soul rest in peace.

Today Alfred Nzo District Municipality together with Matatiele Local Municipality hosted an oversight visit at Mparane Community Hall in Ward 13.

Executive Mayor Cllr. Tsileng Sobuthongo together with the delegation outlined the purpose of the oversight visit on the Tholamela Project for Ward 13 and the Ward 12 Water Scheme Project. The aim to assess progress on the ground against report evaluate the quality of work and ensure that project expenditure aligns with service delivery.

Executive Mayor Cllr: Tsileng Sobuthongo also extended her condolences to the family and community following the tragic killing of a young business women in the community, calling to an end to GBVF.

Community members actively engaged during the oversight visit and expressed their concerns and expectations regarding the progress and completion of the project.

Today Matatiele Local Municipality welcomed MEC for the department of Social Development, MEC Bukiwe Fanta at the Masakala Community Hall in ward 3, this as the Department coordinated a Integrated Community Registration Outreach
Programme (ICROP).

This important outreach responds to the province’s commitment to combat poverty
and child malnutrition, in line with the Provincial Poverty Alleviation Strategy and the
South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) recommendations.

the event was coordinated with various government entities rendering services on wheels to the community that came out in numbers.

Engaging directly with community members, the MEC addressed issues of poverty, malnutrition, education, health, and economic empowerment — reaffirming government’s commitment to taking services closer to the people.

Mayor Cllr. Patrick Stuurman welcomed the initiative saying the presents of departments such as the Department of Home Affairs and SASSA, which are critical services needed by the Communities of ward 3 and surrounding villages, will assist the communities with their social grants.

On Wednesday, 13 May 2026, the Executive Mayor of Alfred Nzo District Municipality, Cllr. Tsileng Sobuthongo, will conduct an oversight visit to the Thulamela Water Supply Project (Phase 2).

The Mayor will be joined by Members of the Mayoral Committee, ANDM Cllrs, MLM Cllrs & senior technical officials to assess progress on the R53 million infrastructure investment, which serves residents in Wards 12 & 13.

Enhancing Accessibility to Essential Services Through Infrastructure Development

Mayor Cllr. Patrick Stuurman has urged the Rholweni community to adopt an open communication approach in order to avoid project-related disputes and ensure the successful implementation of development initiatives.

Mayor Stuurman made these remarks earlier today during the contractor handover for the access road construction project at Rholweni Village in Ward 22.

The scope of work includes site establishment, roadbed preparation and compaction, construction of concrete drainage structures, installation of stormwater pipes, concrete slab construction, grouted stone pitching, installation of road signage, and six months of post-completion maintenance.

Meanwhile, the Portfolio Head for Infrastructure Planning and Development, Cllr. Makopano Shale, emphasised that the project must prioritise youth employment and ensure equal gender representation throughout the implementation process.
