FIRST CASE OF CHOLERA IN MPUMALANGA PROVINCE CONFIRMED.

The Department of Health in Mpumalanga has. Confirmed an investigation of a possible case of Cholera in the province.
A 73 years female patient who is residing at Phaphamang Section in Phake β Dr JS Moroka, was admitted at Mmametlhake hospital on the 26 May 2023 with diarrhea, nausea and vomiting after eating tin fish during the day.
She was a known patient on hypertension treatment.Cholera sample was taken and forwarded to laboratory for investigation. Interim result showed cholera positive.
Final result confirmed that the patient is indeed Cholera positive.
The patient unfortunately demised yesterday the 30 of May 2023 at the hospital.
The Department of Health has deployed Outbreak Response Team in Dr JS Moroka to :
β’ Investigating possible sources of infection and contact tracing
β’ Conduct intensive ommunity awareness campaigns
Communities are advised to be on high alert of cholera.
Cholera is one of the diarrhoe diseases caused by bacteria called vibrio cholera.
Symptoms:
Sudden diarrhoea, which is painless, watery diarrhoea (rice stool), nausea and vomiting, and fever among children, and some individuals do not feel ill
The disease spreads through ingestion/drinking of contaminated βwater with human faeces .
The illness may start from few hours to 5 days of infection.Anyone who presents with diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting should immediately seek medical assistance to the local health facility.
