Taking the Legislature to the People; Oversight visit by Committee on Culture, Sport and Recreation to Edutainment NPO

The Committee paid a visit to the Community centre where representatives and the beneficiaries eagerly waited to interact with their representatives from the Legislature. Lehumo Mlotjwa, projects Manager from Edutainment NPO lead a shot but insightful In Loco inspection to show members what the organisation is all about.

A short background: Edutainment NPO is a registered non-profit organisation established in 2019 to use arts, culture and creativity to educate, empower and create opportunities for children, young people and creative practitioners in Mhluzi Township, Steve Tshwete Municipality

Since its establishment, Edutainment has developed programmes that combine education, arts and entrepreneurship while working closely with schools, Community Arts Centres (CACs), creative businesses and local stakeholders.

In 2024, Edutainment officially launched the Arts Mentorship Programme (AMP), formed Umsindo-The-Constructives, a local creative cooperative, and successfully launched and hosted the first three ArtWave Sessions, creating platforms for local artists to perform, collaborate and grow.

Through the Arts Mentorship Programme, learners explored music, dance, drama, visual arts, fashion, creative writing and digital media, while using these creative disciplines to strengthen their understanding of subjects such as Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Geography and Languages.

In 2026, the programme has grown to reach 10 schools — seven public and three independent schools — supporting both primary and secondary learners.

A recent highlight was “Submerged”, a multidisciplinary STEAM musical theatre production developed over three months. Learners became co-creators, writing poems, songs and dramatic scenes while gaining practical experience in dance, music, costume design, visual arts and sound production.

The Department promised to continue supporting the organisation and also promised to utilize available opportunities to empower the different projects within the NPO.

PORTFOLIO COMMITTEE CONDUCTS OVERSIGHT VISIT TO KOMATI PUBLIC LIBRARY

[PICTURES] The Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Culture, Sport and Recreation today conducted an oversight visit to Komati Public Library in Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, Gert Sibande District.

Established on 10 March 2016, the Komati Public Library was officially opened by former Mayor Mr M. Masina. The facility was initially one of the residential houses built by Eskom and was later converted by the Municipality into a public library. It is situated in Komati Village, Ward 4, and is one of the 14 libraries serving the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality.

During the oversight visit, which started with an In loco inspection, the Committee assessed the state of the library, its operations and the services it provides to the surrounding community.

The library serves as an important information and educational resource for residents, including communities from the surrounding farming areas.

The facility also serves as an information hub to one primary school and one pre-school in Komati, providing access to information, research resources and educational programmes.

The Department continues to support the library through the provision of ICT equipment, library materials and other resources required to strengthen library services.

The oversight visit forms part of the Committee’s responsibility to monitor the delivery of public services and assess whether government facilities are adequately responding to the needs of communities.

Ms Marveline Ngwenya shines at the 2nd National Annual Records Management Awards

The National Archives and Records Management Services of South Africa hosted its 2nd National Annual Records Management Conference in partnership with UNISA and South African Society of Archivists. The conference was on the 26th and 27th August 2026 at UNISA, main campus, Senate Hall.

The award for the Records Manager of the year was introduced for the first time this year. A call was issued to all government bodies in the country to nominate the person they think is the best.

As Mpumalanga the Provincial Archives called for the Mpumalanga Records Management Forum to facilitate the process and propose not less than three names according our sectors of responsibility which is; Provincial departments, municipalities and SOE's. Five names emerged from the process and were submitted through individuals with the support of both the forum and the Provincial Archives.

Nationally 80 names were submitted and went through the process of selection until they got the top four positions. from Steve Tshwete Local Municipality emerged the winner with 100%.
