Lowveld National Botanical Garden

Lowveld National Botanical Garden A Wealth of Nature's Treasures The character of the Garden is shaped by the two main rivers that cut across it, namely the Crocodile and Nels Rivers.

Before these two rivers converge in the Garden, they form spectacular waterfalls which can be viewed at the Cascades and the Nels viewpoints. When the Crocodile River is low, interesting geological formations are visible. When in bloom the clivias at the Garden's main entrance are a beautiful and welcoming sight. Walking through the enchanting African Rain Forest enables one to cross the Crocodile

River across the famous suspended bridge, where the cascading waterfall can also be viewed. The South African Forest contains fascinating vegetation from the Coastal Belt as well as the Limpopo Province. The Garden plays a critical role in conservation of rare and endangered species and played a pivotal role in establishing a cycad gene bank. The Garden also boasts one of the largest collections of South African fig trees. One of the other interesting trees that can be seen in the Garden is the mystical baobab tree which is famous for its unique shape and medicinal properties. Various plant species have been introduced into the Garden. These include South African coastal species and a unique collection of plants which represent the rapidly disappearing tropical forests of central and west Africa.

Walking beneath the arms of a giant

As you walk the pathways of the Lowveld Garden, you are bound to pass beneath the outstretched limbs of our giant tree collection. Giant in two ways: One of the largest collections of southern African trees and some of the largest trees you are likely to come across. Enjoy their shade, appreciate their magnificence, and remember their significance within the rich tapestry of biodiversity they support.

The Poor Man’s Cycad
Even though this cycad is referred to as the poor man’s cycad, since it is considered to be one of the most common ornamental cycads in southern Africa, Encephalartos villosus cones are rich in colour and impressive to look at.

😉The Riverside Trail, for the adventurous at heart.

Are you in search of a little adventure? Then search no further than the Riverside Trail at the Lowveld Garden. This scenic and slightly rugged trail takes you into the Crocodile River gorge through natural riverine forest, providing numerous scenic points from which to view the river and some of its lesser waterfalls.

Depending on your fitness level, or if you plan to take it slow, it can take between one and a half to two hours. Wear comfortable shoes and bring along some water and maybe a snack. 🥾🎒🥪🫗

We do not recommend this for the very young or the elderly.

Watch your footing, keep an eye on the youngsters and most importantly enjoy the rugged beauty of the Lowveld.
