September to November 2021 examinations and the provision of data

The upcoming September to November 2021 online exams are due to start early this year. Given the unusual academic year that resulted from the Covid-19 pandemic and the drawn-out lockdown protocols, the examinations will commence on 6 September 2021 and conclude on 3 December 2021. We encourage all students to start studying and preparing for the online exams.

Most modules will require you to have a device (smartphone, tablet, iPad, laptop or desktop) and data to ensure that you successfully write the exams. Some modules, however, will require additional technical specifications such as web cams and high-speed internet; your lecturer will communicate any such requirements with you.

The details regarding the different exam formats and platforms for your respective modules have been communicated together with the timetable which has already been released. You can view your exam timetable on myUnisa: https://my.unisa.ac.za/unisa-findtool/default.do?sharedTool=unisa.publicexamtimetable

Unisa wishes you well for your upcoming examinations.

Public Protector and Human Rights Commission visits Unisa

Today, the Public Protector, together with the Human Rights Commission, visited Unisa as part of broader engagement with all the higher education institutions in South Africa. The purpose of these discussions is to facilitate a dialogue between tertiary institutions and NSFAS to resolve the issue of access by some prospective students due to a lack of resources. The discussions are ongoing.

Unisa alumna a haircare entrepreneur second to none
Share

The growth, strength, look, feel and smell of hair drove Thokozile Mangwiro to establish her own hair business. Not only were her dreadlocks of 20 years long, dry and hard, but they also needed more nourishment and care.

Thokozile Mangwiro with her product range

For 15 years she tried this and that, and mixed homemade solutions and word-of-mouth recipes for her hair but it was still not enough. According to Thokozile, many products were available worldwide, but none was what she wanted. “As a result, I often found myself in between products. There was no perfect product available.”

This led to a bold, exciting and fun quest to create her own hair brand. Nilotiqa was gradually born and in 2016 launched as a natural hair care brand. Determined to professionalise the natural hair care market, Thokozile embarked for years on extensive research with natural ingredients such as shea butter, marula oil and avocado oil.

The research also involved becoming acquainted with the structure of African hair and skin, and ingredients most suitable for them. All these ingredients went through rigorous testing to ensure that they remained organic and natural and were able to moisturise and nurture natural hair.

“Most importantly, my products are completely South African, from the ingredients to the production process,” Thokozile says. Nilotiqa is making waves in the retail market. It has been sharing shelf space with other famous brands for the past three years, ensuring that natural hair thrives.

“I am a proud alumna of Unisa,” says the Krugersdorp-born entrepreneur. “The institution was introduced to me at an early age. My mother studied at Unisa when we were still babies. She used to visit the Muckleneuk Campus in Pretoria and walked with us up the famous hill. Unisa was always in our lives.”

“I also studied for my master’s in Information Technology from 2013 and 2015 at Unisa. It fit the phase in my life at the time. I had a baby and was working at the same time, and so I needed some balance. Unisa was there to keep me on track,” she says.

Thokozile says that studying long distance made her feel comfortable. “I would be with my baby in the car while accessing the campus in Florida, Johannesburg. Time was of the essence as I was also establishing my business at the time.”

Unisa helped her to become self-driven and focussed. “I was drawn to the corporate world where you are expected to complete a project after starting it. Studying at a distance, I could accomplish that,” she says.

Thokozile Mangwiro hopes to take entrepreneurship to greater heights, as she believes she studied at an institution that will help take her into the future.

Registration deadline extended to 31 March 2021 for undergraduate, honours and postgraduate diploma students
In line with a recent court ruling, the university has extended the registration deadline for undergraduate, honours and postgraduate diploma students to Wednesday 31 March 2021. This extension will accommodate those students who only recently received their offers for the 2021 academic year.

These students are advised to accept their offers by no later than 29 March 2021 and to submit their registrations online by the closing date of 31 March 2021.

All registrations and additions, which are received by the closing date of 31 March 2021, will be processed and finalised, provided that the initial minimum amount is also received by the university by 31 March 2021.

Students who received and accepted an offer for the 2021 academic year, but do not register for 2021, will need to re-apply for admission from September 2021 for the 2022 academic year.

2021 changes to the academic calendar, tuition and assessment
Why did Unisa change the 2021 academic calendar?
Unisa received a request from the Minister of Higher Education and Training to extend the registration period to accommodate the delays in the completion of academic programmes at other tertiary institutions as well as the late publication of Grade 12 results.
In response, the Unisa Council resolved to extend the registration period for all students until 12 March 2021. Subsequent to this decision, the Minister requested a further extension until 31 March 2021. This was also to align with the release of NSFAS funds affecting a majority of students.
To protect the academic integrity of the institution and minimise the adverse effect of a short academic year on student success, the following significant changes to the 2021 academic calendar for semester modules have been implemented (year modules have not been affected).
The extended learning period is also intended to mitigate further Covid challenges that might arise to try to ensure that the academic year is aligned with the calendar year.

Registrations
During 2021, Unisa will have only one registration period, namely 5 January to 31 March 2021.
Students must register for both semester 1 and semester 2 modules during this registration period.
Students can therefore register for a maximum of 10 semester modules, distributed over the two semester periods.
Students are limited to the registration of 5 modules per semester.
To facilitate the single registration, the prerequisites have been amended to co-requisites for most modules, with certain exceptions as determined by individual colleges.
Fees for semester 1 (and year modules) registration are payable on 31 March and 31 August.
Fees for semester 2 registration is payable on 31 May and 31 August.

Semesters
Semester 1 will be extended to a 22 week learning period and assignment dates will be spread over the period 1 April to 31 August 2021.
Semester 2 will be extended in the same manner by allowing students to register early and start with the tuition/assessment in April already.
The two semesters will run concurrently and students can register for their full complement of modules and will have a longer period for learning and engagement.
The assignments and new due dates are published in TL001. The rest of the information in TL101 remain valid.
Each module will still be registered for either semester 1 or semester 2.
Although semester 2 students are taught in the same module site as semester 1 students, they remain registered for the semester 2 registration period and will submit their assignments and examinations against the semester 2 period.
Therefore, although the assignment questions and due dates will be the same for both semesters, the unique assignment numbers are different for the two semesters.

Module sites
In most semester modules, the semester 2 students have been moved to the semester 1 teaching site. The new module site has been renamed to "ALL".
Semester 2 students are taught in the same module site as semester 1 students, but they remain registered for the semester 2 registration period and will submit their assignments and examinations against the semester 2 period.

Examination
For 2021 Unisa will have only one main examination period for both semester 1 and semester 2 examinations.
The 2021 examination will be over a longer period than usual and will be scheduled from 20 September to 26 November 2021 since students have to prepare and write more examinations than usual.
All examinations will be online and the approved examination type per module will be applied.
A special supplementary examination will be conducted during June/July for qualifying students (supplementary, aegrotat, FI concessions) emanating from the January/February 2021 examination period.

Final-year students (Early Completion Programme)
For final-year students that would have been in a position to complete their qualifications at the end of semester 1, Unisa will implement a special Early Completion Programme (ECP).
Only students that need 5 semester modules or less, and have registered for all these modules in the semester 1 period, will be identified for the ECP. Students registered for any practical or year modules will be excluded.
Students will be identified and informed of their placement in the ECP during April.
Detailed communication will be sent to such identified students and will also have the opportunity to opt-out and revert back into the normal semester programme.
Completing ECP students will have to wait for the 2022 application period to enrol for further programmes.
