JB MATABANE CROWNED BEST PERFORMING SCHOOL IN KAE

JB Matabane Secondary School in Ivory Park has dethroned Ivory Park Secondary School to become the 2021 best performing school in Kaalfontein, Allandale, Ebony Park (KAE) and surrounding areas of Ivory Park and Rabie Ridge.

JB Matabane achieved a Matric pass rate of 86,1% in the 2021 academic year. The previous year’s top performing school, Ivory Park Primary School came in third in the 2021 results and achieved a pass rate of 84,9% from 91,28%.

JB Matabane has been consistently in the Top 3 best performing schools in KAE.

Disappointingly, the only school in KAE which saw an increase in it’s Matric results was Umqhele Secondary School in Ivory Park. Umqhele came in last in the 2020 academic year but managed to achieve 5th place in 2021. The school increased from a 56% Matric pass rate to 74,6%.

Eqinisweni Secondary School in Ivory Park had the worst results in 2021 with a dismal Matric performance of 62,1%. Eqinisweni came in at fifth place in the preceding academic year with 78,79%.

According to the Department of Basic Education, 2021 saw the enrolment of the highest number of full-time candidates for the National Senior Certificate.

The National Pass Rate is 76,4% with Bachelors Passes at 36,4%, Diplomas at 25,2% and Higher Certificates at 14,8%.

“The high quality passes we have achieved this year, especially the number of Bachelor and Diploma passes, the overall pass mark, and the passes with distinctions, even in critical subjects, are the hallmarks of the performance of the Class of 2021.” said Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga at the results announcement on Thursday night.

Motshekga said the class of 2021 was the most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic “as they had to endure two consecutive years of harsh exposure to the unrelenting virus”.

34 ETHIOPIAN NATIONALS RESCUED IN GLEN AUSTIN

The National Crime Intelligence Unit (NCIU) received a tip off about a house in Austin View, Midrand, housing suspected trafficked humans.

The information was operationalised on Thursday afternoon which led to the police pouncing at a house in Boerboel Street where thirty four (34) Ethiopian male nationals were found held against their will.

According to NCIU, the initial information received was that, there is forty (40) females and forty (40) males on the address. However, on their arrival, they only managed to rescue thirty four (34) males while the women were not found.

At the time of publishing, it was not clear as to who might be the mastermind against this trafficking. The only information police had is that, the foreign national spaza shop owners normally come and buy the trafficked humans for a minimum amount not exceeding twenty thousand rand (R20,000.00) and work for the owner without salary.

The rescued men looked frail and they confirmed that they arrived at the said address two weeks ago, without being allowed to go outside and only receive food when it suits the bosses who normally come and leave.

The Department of Home Affairs was alerted and will do the necessary. One suspect aged 37 was arrested at the scene and detained at Rabie Ridge SAPS.

The victims were transported to Ivory Park and Midrand SAPS pending the investigation by Home Affairs.

DPCI Warrant Officer Kekana said they will investigate Kidnapping until all the dots are connected then it might change to Human Trafficking.

The arrested suspect will appear before the Tembisa Magistrates Court soon.
