88.6%.

That is the share of all care work across Southern Africa that goes entirely unpaid.

The work that feeds children before school. That sits with the sick through the night. That holds communities together when systems fail. Performed overwhelmingly by women. Counted by no economy. Compensated by none.

Across 5 SADC countries โ€” Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe โ€” our research found that the labour sustaining entire economies is being extracted for free.

This is not a gap in the data. It is a policy failure. And on 29 April, we are bringing the evidence to the table. Join us.

Although it often goes unseen, care work is everywhere.

In the quiet early hours, as children are bathed for school. In the round-the-clock effort to keep elders comfortable. In the meal cooked over firewood. In the water drawn from a borehole miles away. In the hours spent checking homework. It sustains life. It holds economies together. And in Southern Africa, it is overwhelmingly done by women and girls - unpaid, unrecognised, and unprotected.

On 29 April, the Southern Africa Trust invites you to a webinar bringing the unseen into view. It is not only a webinar. It is a solidarity moment and a call to action to centre care, count it, fund it, and fight for it. We will be launching our regional Care Scoping Study, platforming the voices of care workers and their lived experiences, and co-creating an advocacy product that threads together your narratives and advocacy demands for care work in your region.

Today we open a deliberate regional space to confront Gender-Based Violence (GBV) at the intersections of economic and climate justice.

We are live from The Southern Africa Trust Gender Justice Platform. The space is bringing together parliamentarians, traditional and religious leaders, civil society, youth leaders, researchers, and partners from across Southern Africa in one room, with one shared purpose.

GBV is not an isolated issue. It is rooted in economic inequality, climate vulnerability, and the exclusion of young people from the spaces where decisions are made. This Platform is our space to confront those intersections together.

As our CEO Alice D. Kanengoni reminded us in her opening: โ€œIf we are to truly break the cycle of violence, we must transform the systems that sustain it, together.โ€

Two days. One region. A shared commitment to ending GBV through economic justice, climate action, and youth leadership.

Join us for a Youth X-Space Dialogue where we bridge the gap between grassroots narratives and regional policy. Weโ€™re bringing together young entrepreneurs, eco-activists, and climate justice activists to challenge narratives on the barriers to green skills, energy poverty, and sustainable finance.

Our goal? To draft a Southern African Youth Narrative Declaration that demands a just transition rooted in care justice, feminist climate action, and economic dignity.

No more tick-box exercises. This is about power, policy, and our planet. Join us as we listen to how young people reimagine a just future.
