The suspense and long wait for water is finally over for the community of Mansiya, Ward 10 and surrounding areas in Big 5 Hlabisa.

His Worship the Mayor, Cllr Siphile Mdaka, will tomorrow, 02 September 2026, introduce the contractor who will work on the refurbishment of the Mansiya Water Scheme.

‼️ COGTA PORTFOLIO COMMITTEE CONDUCTS OVERSIGHT VISIT AT NONDABUYA WATER PROJECT‼️

Today, 1st September 2026, the Mayor of uMkhanyakude District Municipality, Cllr Siphile Mdaka, together with the technical management team, hosted the Chairperson of the KZN Legislature COGTA Portfolio Committee and its members for an oversight visit at the Nondabuya Water Supply System.

The purpose of the visit was to assess the progress made on the project and to explore how best the Committee can assist the Municipality in fast-tracking water service delivery to our communities.

UMDA HOSTS INDUCTION FOR NEWLY APPOINTED BOARD OF DIRECTORS

NEWS:Today, uMhlosinga Development Agency (UMDA), the development entity of the uMkhanyakude District Municipality led by Mayor Cllr Siphile Mdaka, is hosting an Induction Programme for its newly appointed Board of Directors, facilitated by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (KZN COGTA).

The programme is aimed at familiarising Board Members with UMDA's legislative mandate, governance framework, strategic objectives, institutional responsibilities and development priorities.

The induction provides an important foundation for the Board to effectively fulfil its strategic leadership, oversight and governance responsibilities in support of the Agency's mandate to drive investment and sustainable economic development within the District.

Under the leadership of Mayor Cllr Siphile Mdaka, UMDA remains committed to sound governance, accountability and effective leadership in advancing sustainable development within the uMkhanyakude District.

WOMEN'S MONTH TRIBUTE: THE GESTURE THAT DEFINED UBUNTU

As Women's Month draws to a close, we have learnt that true leadership is measured not by speeches, but by gestures.

It would be remiss of us not to acknowledge the profound gesture by the Mayor of uMkhanyakude District Municipality, Cllr Siphile Mdaka.

During the Golden Games held at KwaMshane Sports Complex, where senior citizens were gifted with blankets and cosmetics, the Mayor did something remarkable.

Turning to the male elders (omkhulu) present, he said:
" Ngicela omkhulu bangidlulisele lesipho koGogo emakhaya" .( Please, grandfathers, deliver this gift to the grandmothers at home)
It was not just a handover of blankets but a restoration of dignity love and honour for our women .

‼️ MAYOR MDAKA PROVIDES UPDATE ON MASHABANE WATER INFRASTRUCTURE UPGRADE‼️

The UMkhanyakude District Municipality, Cllr Siphile Mdaka, is pleased to announce major progress on the upgrade of the Mashabane (Hlokohloko) Water Treatment Works.

The municipality is finalising the upgrade of the plant from 0.5 million litres to 3 million litres per day, representing a six-fold increase in capacity to ensure long-term water security.

The project extracts raw water directly from the Pongola River ensuring a sustainable and independent supply for the area.

Benefitting communities
The upgraded plant will ensure a reliable supply of potable water to Hlazane, Hlokohloko, Welcome, Madonela, Mboza and Manyampisi.

This intervention directly resolves the water challenges caused by illegal connections, which had collapsed the previous supply sourced from Shemula.

The project is on track and is scheduled for commissioning soon.
