Guests at Phinda experience unforgettable interpretive game drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles, led by professionally trained &Beyond rangers and Zulu trackers, as well as a wide range of optional adventures in the bush and on the beach. Phinda is home to six magnificent lodges, each with its own individual charm and character: Mountain Lodge, Rock Lodge, Forest Lodge, Vlei Lodge, Zuka Lodge and Phinda Homestead.

Meet Sipho Mtshali ! 🦏

Sipho Mtshali began his journey at andBeyond Phinda in 2016 as a staff driver, all while studying security to prepare for future opportunities within the company. In 2018, he was given the chance to train and work as a barman, gaining valuable experience while staying close to the reserve.
When the lodges closed during COVID-19, his security studies enabled him to take on the role of field manager, patrolling the reserve until April 2022. Being in the field awakened his passion for the bush. “Growing up herding cattle taught me to read the land and the animals; it’s something I’ve always loved,” he says. He often joined trackers in the field to learn more, building on the skills he had known since childhood.

His dedication paid off when he formally requested training. After completing assessments, Sipho officially qualified as a tracker in September 2023 and began his new role the following month. “Every day I learn something new from the rangers, and one day I hope to become a ranger,” he adds.

New to our reserve, but a relic of the wild — ivory shaped by decades and presence shaped by survival.

With fewer than 20 true Big Tuskers remaining in South Africa, it’s a privilege to have the Munyawana Conservancy become part of this elephant’s story.
