VANDALISM OF NEWLY REFURBISHED TRAFFIC SIGNALS BEHIND MAHIKENG MALL

The Mahikeng Local Municipality (MLM) is deeply disappointed to confirm that the newly refurbished traffic signal intersection at the back of Mahikeng Mall, near Correctional Services, has been vandalized and cables stolen.

The incident, which was discovered this morning, has rendered the traffic signals non-functional, posing a serious safety risk to motorists and pedestrians using this busy intersection.

A team from the Municipality's Technical Services is currently at the police station to open a case of theft and vandalism with the South African Police Service (SAPS).

This senseless act of vandalism comes just weeks after the Municipality invested significant resources to refurbish the intersection to improve traffic flow and road safety in the area. The theft of municipal infrastructure not only costs ratepayers money but also endangers lives.

The Municipality is urgently attending to the matter. Our electrical team is on site to assess the damage, and traffic officers will be deployed to direct traffic until repairs are completed.

Mahikeng Local Municipality appeals to community members who may have witnessed any suspicious activity around the intersection to come forward and report it to SAPS or to the Municipality's Public Safety Unit on 018 389 0111. Information may also be shared anonymously.

We further appeal to scrap metal dealers not to buy municipal cables and to report anyone attempting to sell such items.

Vandalism of public infrastructure is a criminal offence and an attack on service delivery. The Municipality will not hesitate to act against perpetrators.

The Municipality apologises for the inconvenience caused and urges motorists to approach the intersection with extreme caution and to treat it as a four-way stop until functionality is restored.

LEARNING AND PLAY TAKE CENTRE STAGE AS MMABATHO LIBRARY HOSTS “READ, PLAY AND GIGGLE” AT MONTSHIWA STADIUM

joy of learning and playing took centre stage as the Mahikeng Local Municipality, through its Mmabatho Library in collaboration with the Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation (ACSR), held a special "Library Play Day – Read, Play and Giggle” at Montshioa Stadium, bringing together young children from various crèches around Mahikeng for a day filled with fun, learning and discovery.

The initiative created an exciting environment where children could experience the magic of books beyond the traditional library setting, demonstrating that learning can be both educational and entertaining. Through songs, play and creative activities, the young participants were encouraged to explore their imagination, express themselves and develop an early appreciation for reading.

With laughter and excitement filling the Montshioa Stadium, the event provided an opportunity for children to interact with their peers while participating in activities designed to stimulate their curiosity and creativity. Early childhood is a critical stage in developing language, communication and literacy skills. By introducing reading through playful and interactive experiences, initiatives such as the Library Play Day help lay a foundation for lifelong learning while encouraging children to develop confidence and a positive attitude towards education.

The participation of various crèches including Peppa Pig, Kiddoland, Elbee, Light Bearers, Tiny Tots, Lighters, Living Faith, Selina, Golamonye, Angels Academy, Shalom Tellitabies and Ga Israel Pre-School highlighted the importance of collaboration between Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres and public libraries in promoting learning among young learners.

Through Mmabatho Library, Mahikeng Local Municipality continues to create opportunities that bring learning closer to communities and encourage children to explore the world through reading and playing. The initiative also reinforces the role of libraries as welcoming spaces where education, creativity and community engagement come together.

With initiatives like “Read, Play and Giggle”, the journey towards building a reading culture begins not only in classrooms and libraries, but also through joyful experiences that inspire young minds to dream bigger and learn more.

Happy Rakate from Human Settlements was joined by Tebogo Phaedi from Mahikeng Local Municipality this morning on Mmabatho FM to provide clarity of the difference between the National Housing Needs Register and the Housing Waiting List, helping community members better understand the housing application and allocation process.

The Housing Needs Register records households in need of government-subsidised housing and helps government plan housing delivery, while the Housing Waiting List commonly refers to applicants awaiting housing opportunities. Being registered does not guarantee a house or jmmediate allocation, as applicants must meet the relevant eligibility requirements and undergo the necessary verification processes.

MAHIKENG LOCAL MUNICIPALITY DELIVERS VITAL SERVICES IN WARD 19 - MAGOGWE CENTRAL

The Mahikeng Local Municipality, through its Indigent Office and Fire Safety & Awareness programme, successfully delivered vital community services in Ward 19, Magogwe Central, under the leadership of Ward Councillor Nonzame Hlazo.

The outreach focused on addressing the immediate needs of residents while promoting safety, awareness, and access to essential municipal support.

A key highlight of the engagement was the encouragement of households to register as indigent beneficiaries, enabling them to benefit from the Municipality's Free Basic Electricity (FBE) programme. In addition, the team facilitated RDP verification and housing enquiries, ensuring that no family is left behind.

Through this collaborative effort, Mahikeng Local Municipality reaffirms its commitment to community empowerment and inclusive service delivery — bringing relief to households, strengthening safety awareness, and ensuring that every qualifying family has access to essential energy services.

The Municipality encourages all qualifying households in Ward 19 and across Mahikeng who have not yet registered as indigents to visit their nearest municipal office or contact the Indigent Office for assistance.

MAHIKENG LOCAL MUNICIPALITY AND SASSA BRING INTEGRATED SERVICES TO OTTOSHOOP - WARD 4

Ottoshoop - The Mahikeng Local Municipality, through its Offices of Indigent Services, Fire Safety & Awareness, and Housing, in collaboration with SASSA Mahikeng, SAPS, the Department of Health, Department of Home Affairs, Department of Social Development, Eskom, Standard Bank, Nedbank, Lifeline, Lesaka EasyPay, the Community Policing Forum (CPF), and the Ottoshoop Youth Forum, successfully hosted the SASSA Integrated Community Registration Outreach Programme for Community Information and Response at Ottoshoop Sports Ground (Ward 4).

The programme was held under the leadership of Ward 4 Councillor,Mogomotsi Senokwane who was also the Acting Executive Mayor.

During the outreach, various stakeholders delivered presentations and provided essential services directly to the community, bringing government and private sector services closer to the people.

Addressing the community, Cllr. Senokwane encouraged community members and representatives of political parties present to spread the word widely, ensuring that all residents take advantage of these vital services brought to their doorstep.

Cllr. Senokwane further expressed his gratitude to the Executive Mayor of Mahikeng, Cllr. Tshepiso Mphehlo, whose presence and support underscored the Municipality's commitment to ensuring that communities across Mahikeng are well served by all departments and partners.

MAHIKENG LOCAL MUNICIPALITY HOLDS OTTOSHOOP HERITAGE TOUR AND HERITAGE WALK AT MOLEMANE EYE NATURE RESERVE

Mahikeng - The Mahikeng Local Municipality, through its Local Economic Development (LED) Unit, held the Ottoshoop Heritage Tour and Heritage Walk at the Molemane Eye Nature Reserve, bringing heritage preservation, cultural awareness and community-based tourism into focus.

Held under the theme "Ensuring Cultural Landmarks Are Preserved, Fostering Community Based Tourism,” the initiative highlighted the importance of protecting historical sites while encouraging communities to appreciate their cultural heritage and explore tourism opportunities within Mahikeng and its surroundings.

The programme was attended by the Chief Whip of Council, Cllr. Monametsi Moeti, MMC for Socio-Economic Development, Cllr. Lucas Motlhabane, MMC for Stakeholder Relations, Cllr. Baratang Mathe, MMC for Community Services, Cllr. Kgomotso Mbana, Senior Manager for Infrastructure, Mmatlhapi Moloi-Tsae, municipal officials and various media houses, demonstrating the Municipality's commitment to promoting heritage awareness and exploring opportunities for sustainable tourism development.

A key highlight of the programme was the three-kilometre heritage walk to Molemane Eye, offering participants an opportunity to experience the natural surroundings and cultural significance of the area. The walk provided a platform to promote awareness of local heritage and the value of preserving historical landmarks for future generations.

The heritage tour also included visits to significant historical sites, including the Mill House, Silo, Creamery and Mzilikazi Wall, among other landmarks. These sites form part of the area's rich historical landscape and offer opportunities to deepen public understanding of the region's past, cultural identity and heritage.

Community-based tourism plays an important role in ensuring that local communities benefit from the tourism potential of their surroundings. By raising awareness of heritage sites and encouraging people to visit and learn about them, initiatives such as the Ottoshoop Heritage Tour and Molemane Eye Heritage Walk can contribute to the development of sustainable tourism while strengthening community pride and cultural identity.
