NEW COUNCILLORS SWORN IN TO SERVE WATERBERG DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY COUNCIL

Waterberg District Municipality has welcomed two newly sworn-in Councillors following their formal inauguration to the District Council.

Cllr Mawela Joel Mpedi, an indirectly elected Councillor from Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality and Cllr Nkholo James Ditle, a directly elected Councillor from Mogalakwena Municipality, took their oaths of office before His Worship Mr J. Mtsweni at the Modimolle Magistrate Court.

The two Councillors are expected to immediately assume their responsibilities as they will participate in their first Council meeting shortly after their swearing-in.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by the Speaker of Waterberg District Municipality, Cllr Mabu Gumede.

Waterberg District Municipality wishes Cllrs Mpedi and Ditle well as they begin their journey of service and contribution towards strengthening local government and improving the lives of communities across the District.

WATERBERG DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY HOSTS IDP, BUDGET & PMS REPRESENTATIVE FORUM

Waterberg District Municipality convened its Integrated Development Plan (IDP), Budget and Performance Management System (PMS) Representative Forum, which is a critical platform that brings together the District Municipality, Local municipalities, Sector departments, Stakeholders and Community representatives to strengthen collaboration, coordination and consultation in municipal planning.

The forum reinforces the District’s commitment to sustainable development and improved service delivery by ensuring that Municipal plans and priorities remain aligned with the needs and aspirations of communities.

Delivering the keynote address, the Acting Executive Mayor, Cllr Ngobeni, emphasised the importance of accountability, transparency and active community participation in local governance, guided by the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, the Bill of Rights and the Municipal Systems Act.

Cllr Ngobeni further highlighted the significance of the Integrated Development Plan as a strategic framework that guides municipal programmes, infrastructure development, economic growth initiatives and service delivery interventions aimed at improving the lives of residents.

SECOND DAY OF THE NCOP PROVINCIAL WEEK OVERSIGHT VISIT IN THABAZIMBI

The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) conducted an oversight visit to Thabazimbi Local Municipality as part of its Provincial Week programme, focusing on service delivery projects and challenges affecting the communities.

The programme started with a briefing at the Northam Waste Water Treatment Works (NWWTW), followed by oversight visits to the Northam Water Reticulation Project and the Regorogile Extension 8 Housing Project.

Community members also engaged with the delegation raising concerns around water supply, sewer challenges and electricity.

The session was attended by the Executive Mayor of Waterberg, Mayors of Thabazimbi and Lephalale Local Municipalities, NCOP members, Councillors, TLM Management Team and other stakeholders.

During the session held at the Municipal council chamber, a representative from the Mokolo Crocodile Water Augmentation Project Phase 2A delivered a presentation, providing an update on the project and matters relating to water augmentation in the area.

NCOP PROVINCIAL WEEK UNDERWAY IN LEPHALALE

The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) Provincial Week is currently underway at the Lephalale Local Municipality Council Chamber.

This year’s Provincial Week is being held under the theme: “Confronting the challenges facing the timely delivery of viable public infrastructure to communities and building viable municipalities for enhanced delivery of basic services.”

During the proceedings, MECs for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure , Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs and Health will make presentations on the work and progress of their respective departments.

The Waterberg District Municipality Executive Mayor, together with the Mayors of Lephalale, Thabazimbi and Mogalakwena, will also present progress reports on the implementation of recommendations arising from the NCOP’s 2024/2025 oversight visits.

As part of the programme, the delegation will conduct oversight visits to several infrastructure projects, including the CRU Project, Altostyd Housing Project and the Thabo Mbeki Wastewater Project in Thabo Mbeki Township.

The Provincial Week provides an opportunity for the NCOP to assess progress, engage communities and municipalities and identify challenges affecting the delivery of essential services and public infrastructure.

WATERBERG DISTRICT STRENGTHENS PARTNERSHIPS WITH MEDUPI AND MATIMBA POWER STATIONS

The Executive Mayor of Waterberg District Municipality Cllr Moloko Maeko, participated in a high-level stakeholder engagement with the General Manager of Medupi Power Station, Ms Thozama Gangi, the General Manager of Matimba Power Station, Mr Wikus Jansen Van Rensburg, and senior officials from both entities.

The engagement focused on strengthening collaboration between the District Municipality and the two power stations, with particular emphasis on community empowerment programmes, Local Economic Development initiatives, business development opportunities and employment creation.

Key service delivery matters including road infrastructure, infrastructure development, and sewer challenges, were also discussed as part of efforts to find sustainable solutions that will benefit communities.

The meeting further explored the possibility of establishing information centres in Steenbokpan and Thabo Mbeki to improve access to information and services for residents.

As part of strengthening the partnership, the parties agreed to pursue a Corporate Social Investment (CSI) collaboration, with immediate steps to be taken towards identifying and implementing impactful projects.

The Waterberg District Municipality remains committed to working with strategic partners to advance inclusive development, improve service delivery and create opportunities that uplift communities.
