Het u gesoek na 'n lekker uitstappie vir die komende week? Van Maandag af is toegang vir dagbesoekers gratis by sommige Sanparke. Naaste aan Mosselbaai is die Wildernisgedeelte van die Garden Route Nasionale Park met die bekende groot boom, lieflike mere, riviere, digte inheemse woude en riviermondings en dagstaproetes.
In die teenoorgestelde rigting is die bekende Bontebokpark met die lieflikste fynbos en riviervistas. Dié park is sowat 'n anderhalfuur se ry, rigting Swellendam. met heelwat bontebok en zebra te sien - ideale kuierplek vir 'n piekniek, wildsbesigtiging en 'n rustige omgewing.

Looking for a nice trip for the coming week? From Monday, entry for day visitors is free at some SANParks. Closest to Mossel Bay is the Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park with the famous big tree, lovely lakes, rivers, dense indigenous forests and estuaries and day hikes.
In the opposite direction is the famous Bontebok Park with the most beautiful fynbos and river vistas. This park is about an hour and a half drive in the direction of Swellendam. With lots of bontebok and zebra to see- an ideal place for a picnic, game viewing, and a peaceful environment.

Ever heard of Marakele?

Its name literally means "place of sanctuary" in Setswana, and it earns it. Tucked into the Waterberg mountains, Marakele National Park is home to the largest breeding colony of Cape vultures on Earth.

The Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) will publish its updated Municipal Health By-law for public comment, following approval by Council on 31 August 2026 to advertise the draft document for a 30-day period.

The By-law, which regulates municipal health services across the district, is being updated for the first time since 2018 to bring it in line with changes to the National Norms and Standards for Environmental Health. With inclement weather and heavy rainfall expected, increased volumes of natural debris may become visible along Mossel Bay’s coastline.

During heavy rain and flooding, branches, tree trunks and other organic material may be carried from mountain and inland catchment areas into rivers. From there, river currents transport the material into estuaries and the ocean, where tides, waves and coastal currents may eventually deposit it on beaches.

The public is therefore reminded of the Municipality’s standard operating approach concerning natural debris along the Mossel Bay coastline.

Although this material may appear untidy, natural woody debris is not regarded as ordinary waste.

It forms part of the natural coastal system and can help to:
🌾 Trap and retain sand
🏖️ Support natural beach recovery after storms
🌱 Promote dune recovery and stabilisation
🌊 Reduce coastal erosion and strengthen ecosystem resilience

In line with a municipal Council resolution, natural material such as wood and sand is generally not removed from the coastline because of the role it plays in natural coastal rehabilitation and protection. Municipal cleaning efforts focus on designated swimming beaches and the removal of unnatural waste, including plastics, containers and tyres.

Residents and visitors are asked to understand that the presence of natural debris following severe weather does not necessarily indicate that beaches are not being maintained. What may look untidy can form an important part of nature’s coastal recovery process.

🌊 𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔: 𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐔𝐑𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐄 𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀𝐀𝐋 𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐒 𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝐊𝐔𝐒𝐋𝐘𝐍
Met die gure weer en swaar reënval wat verwag word, kan groter hoeveelhede natuurlike materiaal langs Mosselbaai se kuslyn sigbaar word.

Tydens swaar reën en oorstromings kan takke, boomstamme en ander organiese materiaal vanaf berg- en binnelandse opvangsgebiede na riviere meegesleur word. Van daar vervoer rivierstrome die materiaal na riviermondings en die see, waar getye, golwe en seestrome dit uiteindelik op strande kan uitspoel.

Die publiek word dus herinner aan die Munisipaliteit se standaardbenadering tot die hantering van natuurlike materiaal langs die Mosselbaai-kuslyn.

Hoewel hierdie materiaal onnet mag voorkom, word natuurlike houtagtige materiaal nie as gewone afval beskou nie.

Dit vorm deel van die natuurlike kusstelsel en kan help om:
🌾 Sand vas te vang en te behou
🏖️ Natuurlike strandherstel ná storms te ondersteun
🌱 Duinherstel en -stabilisering te bevorder
🌊 Kuserosie te verminder en die veerkragtigheid van die ekosisteem te versterk

In ooreenstemming met ’n raadsbesluit, word natuurlike materiaal soos hout en sand oor die algemeen nie van die kuslyn verwyder nie, vanweë die rol wat dit in natuurlike kusrehabilitasie en -beskerming speel. Munisipale skoonmaakwerk fokus op aangewese swemstrande en die verwydering van onnatuurlike afval, waaronder plastiek, houers en bande.

Inwoners en besoekers word versoek om te verstaan dat die teenwoordigheid van natuurlike materiaal ná strawwe weer nie noodwendig beteken dat strande nie onderhou word nie. Wat onnet mag voorkom, kan ’n belangrike deel van die natuur se eie kusherstelproses vorm.

“The construction of Phase 1 of the Garden Route District Municipality’s Regional Waste Management Facility, located approximately 15 km outside Mossel Bay next to PetroSA, is now approximately 70% complete, with several key components nearing completion,” said Johan Gie, Manager: District Waste Management.

𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲:
- The final stone drainage layer is being installed over the lining materials of Cell 1A.
- The lining of the leachate and contaminated water dams is nearing completion.
- Construction of the concrete access road is nearing completion.
- Buildings and other associated infrastructure works are progressing in accordance with the approved construction programme.

Overall, the project is progressing well, with major construction elements steadily moving towards completion.
