Mossel Bay is preparing to welcome athletes and supporters for an exciting triathlon event on Sunday, 20 September 2026, forming part of the annual Mossel Bay Sports and Recreation Festival.

Although well established, the event will be presented in Mossel Bay for the first time, adding another exciting sporting code to the festival programme and further strengthening the town’s growing profile as a competitive events and training destination.

Major sporting events bring more than exciting competition. They attract visitors, support local accommodation establishments, restaurants and businesses, and provide an opportunity to showcase everything Mossel Bay has to offer.

While the event may have a notable impact on traffic flow, access and movement in affected areas, careful planning is being undertaken with the aim of minimising the public impact as far as reasonably possible. Residents and road users are requested to take note of official event and traffic notices and to plan their movements accordingly. The Municipality thanks the community in advance for its patience, understanding and cooperation.

Residents are encouraged to support the event and extend a warm Mossel Bay welcome to the athletes, organisers and visitors joining us on 20 September.

The 2026 Mossel Bay Sport and Recreation Festival is serving up something new!

For the first time, Mossel Bay Padel joins the festival programme with an action-packed Mixed Tournament, powered by Volkswagen Mossel Bay.

The day kicks off with a Beginner Mixed Americano from 08:00 to 10:00, followed by the Intermediate and Advanced Mixed Doubles Tournament from 10:00 to 16:00. Prize-giving takes place at 16:30.

Whether you are new to the court, ready for serious competition or keen to support the players, come experience the fast-paced fun of one of the world’s most exciting growing sports.

With inclement weather and heavy rainfall expected, increased volumes of natural debris may become visible along Mossel Bay’s coastline.

During heavy rain and flooding, branches, tree trunks and other organic material may be carried from mountain and inland catchment areas into rivers. From there, river currents transport the material into estuaries and the ocean, where tides, waves and coastal currents may eventually deposit it on beaches.

The public is therefore reminded of the Municipality’s standard operating approach concerning natural debris along the Mossel Bay coastline.

Although this material may appear untidy, natural woody debris is not regarded as ordinary waste.

It forms part of the natural coastal system and can help to:
🌾 Trap and retain sand
🏖️ Support natural beach recovery after storms
🌱 Promote dune recovery and stabilisation
🌊 Reduce coastal erosion and strengthen ecosystem resilience

In line with a municipal Council resolution, natural material such as wood and sand is generally not removed from the coastline because of the role it plays in natural coastal rehabilitation and protection. Municipal cleaning efforts focus on designated swimming beaches and the removal of unnatural waste, including plastics, containers and tyres.

Residents and visitors are asked to understand that the presence of natural debris following severe weather does not necessarily indicate that beaches are not being maintained. What may look untidy can form an important part of nature’s coastal recovery process.

🌊 𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔: 𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐔𝐑𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐄 𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀𝐀𝐋 𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐒 𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝐊𝐔𝐒𝐋𝐘𝐍
Met die gure weer en swaar reënval wat verwag word, kan groter hoeveelhede natuurlike materiaal langs Mosselbaai se kuslyn sigbaar word.

Tydens swaar reën en oorstromings kan takke, boomstamme en ander organiese materiaal vanaf berg- en binnelandse opvangsgebiede na riviere meegesleur word. Van daar vervoer rivierstrome die materiaal na riviermondings en die see, waar getye, golwe en seestrome dit uiteindelik op strande kan uitspoel.

Die publiek word dus herinner aan die Munisipaliteit se standaardbenadering tot die hantering van natuurlike materiaal langs die Mosselbaai-kuslyn.

Hoewel hierdie materiaal onnet mag voorkom, word natuurlike houtagtige materiaal nie as gewone afval beskou nie.

Dit vorm deel van die natuurlike kusstelsel en kan help om:
🌾 Sand vas te vang en te behou
🏖️ Natuurlike strandherstel ná storms te ondersteun
🌱 Duinherstel en -stabilisering te bevorder
🌊 Kuserosie te verminder en die veerkragtigheid van die ekosisteem te versterk

In ooreenstemming met ’n raadsbesluit, word natuurlike materiaal soos hout en sand oor die algemeen nie van die kuslyn verwyder nie, vanweë die rol wat dit in natuurlike kusrehabilitasie en -beskerming speel. Munisipale skoonmaakwerk fokus op aangewese swemstrande en die verwydering van onnatuurlike afval, waaronder plastiek, houers en bande.

Inwoners en besoekers word versoek om te verstaan dat die teenwoordigheid van natuurlike materiaal ná strawwe weer nie noodwendig beteken dat strande nie onderhou word nie. Wat onnet mag voorkom, kan ’n belangrike deel van die natuur se eie kusherstelproses vorm.
