Verbale mishandeling en vyandigheid - veral tydens oproepe en diensleweringsversoeke - plaas groot druk op die mense wat hier is om te help en kan dienslewering vertraag.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), observed annually on 15 June, marks its 20th anniversary in 2026 under the global theme: “Beyond Awareness: Making
Elder Abuse Prevention Work” and the rallying call “Be Bold: Age With Attitude!”

As part of the Mossel Bay Municipality’s Theme Fridays initiative, staff members and community partners actively showed their support by dressing in designated colours each week, helping to raise awareness and stand in solidarity with older persons in our community.

On 19 June, Karos Haven and the Western Cape Older Persons Forum showing their support in observing World Elder Abuse Awareness Month as the week's theme colour was orange, highlighting awareness around Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) and its impact on the elderly.

Today we celebrate Sonwa Mbandezi, our dedicated Assistant Community Development Officer at the Youth Development Office.
Sonwa began his journey in local government as a student in August 2013, and was appointed permanently on 7 September 2015. Since then, he has built a remarkable career driven by passion for public service and community development.
Over the years, Sonwa has contributed to several departments, including:
✔️ Legal Services
✔️ Creditors and Salaries
✔️ Supply Chain Management
✔️ Early Childhood Development
✔️ HIV/AIDS, Gender, Disability and Elderly Services
✔️ Youth Development (since August 2022)

In his current role, he supports community programmes, administrative functions, and youth initiatives that strengthen service delivery and uplift communities.
Each step of his journey has shaped his professional and personal growth, allowing him to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. He remains committed to teamwork, service excellence, and creating positive opportunities for the community.
