Revolutionary greetings sons and daughters of the stolen land, we hope this communication finds you well amidst these trying times.

Since the academic year commenced, NSFAS has been a serious cause for concern as many students faced different challenges relating to NSFAS funding.

As PASMA we remain committed to walk this difficult journey with affected students, ensuring that these issues are attended to and resolved. However, the unjust, inconsiderate systems of NSFAS has not made this easy but we remained committed to our cause.

PASMA has noted that many students received emails on the 31st August 2026 stating that their 2026 NSFAS Allowances cannot be disbursed as the records indicate "No NSFAS Payment Received".

PASMA is currently in communication with FAO to get the full reasons behind these emails and to get clarity on the way forward.

FAO has since sent a list of all affected students to NSFAS so that these cases may be investigated and resolved.

We are still adamant on having a joint meeting with both FAO and NSFAS to find a lasting solution to these ongoing challenges, however it has not been easy given the status quo of the university. We will continue to push until that meeting happens.

We urge all affected students to monitor their student emails and SOS for updates and to contact us should you need intervention.

We remain committed to resolving these challenges and ensuring fair support for all students.

Revolutionary Greetings Sons and Daughters of Azania.

PASMA wishes to bring to the attention of all CPUT students the growing concerns surrounding several decisions and longstanding failures by university management that directly affect the lives, education and future of students.

For many students, these matters may appear as isolated administrative problems. They are not. The continued worsening conditions of university residences, the failure to adequately support residence development programmes, the withholding of academic transcripts and qualification certificates from affected graduates, and the proposed financial recovery plan for 2027 are interconnected issues that raise serious questions about student welfare, access to education, accountability and meaningful student participation in institutional decision-making.

Students continue to live in residences where basic maintenance remains outstanding, while essential appliances and facilities are reportedly left unused or in storage. At the same time, residence student development programmes have faced prolonged difficulties in accessing the funding necessary to create vibrant and supportive student communities.
Even more concerning is the issue of graduates affected by accommodation-related debt following the implementation of the NSFAS Accommodation Cap. Students who have completed their academic requirements should not be prevented from accessing their qualifications and academic records because of unresolved institutional and administrative challenges.
We are also deeply concerned about the proposed 2027 Financial Recovery Plan, particularly proposals relating to upfront registration fees and the manner in which consultation with students and student leadership has been approached. Any policy that directly affects students' ability to register and access higher education must be subjected to genuine, transparent and meaningful consultation.

As PASMA, we reject the normalisation of poor service delivery, administrative delays and unilateral decision-making. We reject the idea that students must continuously bear the consequences of institutional failures. We will continue to engage, organise, mobilise and advocate for students through lawful and peaceful means. Where students are excluded from decisions that directly affect them, PASMA will continue to demand their inclusion. Where students are subjected to institutional failures, PASMA will continue to demand accountability. Where the rights and dignity of students are threatened, PASMA will continue to raise its voice.

Students must not be treated merely as recipients of institutional decisions. Students are central stakeholders in the university and must have a meaningful voice in decisions that affect their education, finances, accommodation

PASMA would like to update the student body following the consultation meeting that was held and the feedback that has been received on issues affecting students.

In regards to the ongoing Teaching Practice engagements, PASMA would like to put emphasis on the fact that benchmarking on the Teaching Practice allowance was conducted by the previous PASMA-deployed SRC of 2024/25. The benchmarking showed that in other universities a specific amount has been added to the Teaching Practice module fee. While we understand that there are costs associated with teaching practice, we maintain that no increase can be imposed on students without proper consultation and the approval of NSFAS. In this regard, FAO has been mandated to engage NSFAS to determine to what percentage NSFAS will allow the module fee to be increased. PASMA will await the outcome of this engagement and will reject any attempt to unilaterally burden students with additional costs.

Secondary to that, academic transcripts for NSFAS-funded students who are affected by the accommodation CAP has been granted. The current directive requires affected students to visit the Financial Aid Office to obtain a memo confirming that they are affected by the accommodation CAP. After that, students must pay an amount of R80 and then proceed to AGC to collect their transcript.

However PASMA still finds this unacceptable. It is unjust for students who are already financially excluded to be forced to pay in order to access their own academic records. We call on the university and NSFAS to urgently review and remove this barrier.

We further note with concern that students who are studying Advanced Diploma and have already received their semester marks will not be able to receive their academic record. This creates an additional barrier for students who require their results for applications, registrations, and other academic purposes. PASMA condemns this exclusion and demands that the university urgently resolve this issue to ensure all students have access to their academic records without discrimination.

On financial clearance rules, PASMA maintains a firm position. Matters relating to financial clearance, upfront payments and application fees cannot be dealt with through consultation with the SRC alone. While we acknowledge that the university is facing financial constraints, we refuse to be part of any process that has been rejected by students.

PASMA deployed SRCs will not engage on financial clearance matters without the involvement of all student structures, political formations, societies and the broader student body through mass meetings. Any decision that affects students’ right to access education must be made transparently and with the full participation of students.

PASMA remains committed to defending the interests of students and ensuring that university management does not take decisions over the heads of students. We will communicate further updates once feedback has been received from NSFAS and University Management.

Following our previous statement regarding the unlawful exclusion of Honours applicants in the Faculty of Education, PASMA wishes to provide a further update.

It has come to our attention that the Faculty Manager claims to have met with the LSRC regarding the admission of Honours applicants. In that meeting, the Faculty Manager further claims that the requirement for applicants to have five years of work experience “is not true.”

PASMA rejects the resolution taken by the Faculty Manager and LSRC in its entirety.

It is a fact that a huge number of students who applied for Honours in Leadership and Management have been rejected precisely because of this “requirement.” Denying its existence while students continue to face rejection on this basis is misleading and undermines the lived reality of affected applicants.

The imposition of unpublished, arbitrary requirements remains a violation of fairness, transparency, and academic justice. PASMA will not accept any attempt to downplay or dismiss the barriers being placed before students from poor and working-class backgrounds.

We reiterate our call to the Faculty of Education, Senate, and all relevant governance structures, SUSPEND AND REVIEW THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THESE UNAPPROVED REQUIREMENTS. All admissions must be based solely on the published prospectus criteria.

PASMA remains resolute in defending the academic rights of students. We will continue to engage and mobilise until fairness is restored for all applicants.

Following our previous statement dated 19 July 2026 regarding the challenges facing Sport students at CPUT, PASMA deployed Faculty Representatives met with the Faculty Dean and the Department Executive of Sports Management as committed.

We wish to provide the following feedback from the engagement:

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Placements
The WIL lecturer took early maternity leave due to personal reasons. However, she has committed to placing students per day in the meantime to reduce delays. Her replacement was initially scheduled to start in August. PASMA deployees strongly advocated for an earlier start date due to the stagnation in WIL placements. The resolution reached is that a part-time contract will be arranged so that the replacement can commence with her duties ASAP to accelerate placements.

The faculty will look into the matter of outstanding marks. It was confirmed that all lecturers have submitted marks, and the faculty is now addressing the administrative bottlenecks causing the delay in release.

Regarding financial support for students doing in-service training, the Departmen Secretary will engage with SETA to establish what assistance can be provided to qualifying students.

PASMA welcomes the progress made but maintains that no student should be academically disadvantaged due to staffing gaps or administrative delays. We will continue to monitor the implementation of these resolutions closely.

Students are encouraged to keep reporting concerns to their PASMA deployed Faculty Representatives. Further updates will be communicated as developments occur.

With hopes that this communique finds you well during these trying times. Following our recent call for students experiencing unresolved NSFAS funding issues to submit their details, we would like to thank every student who responded and trusted PASMA with their cases.

We can confirm that 110 students submitted NSFAS-related cases through the form. These cases were consolidated and submitted through our CSRC Secretary-General for further engagement and resolution.

The feedback received indicates that outcomes differ per student. The breakdown of cases is as follows:
- 7 students - NSFAS outstanding allowance for 1 month
- 3 students - NSFAS loan in progress
- 3 students - NSFAS application declined due to changing qualification, N not sufficient to complete qualification
- 23 students - under gap investigation, allowances will be paid along with the August allowance
- 10 students - Appeals rejected
- 29 students - Linked to NSFAS exception
- 7 students - NSFAS outstanding allowance for 1 month
- 3 students - NSFAS loan in progress, students received emails
- 1 student - travel allowance processed until July, linked to ADOWA
- 1 student - NSFAS application rejected due to outstanding documents
- 2 students - 2025 1 month outstanding allowance
- 1 student - 2024 NSFAS Exception
- 2 students - rejected as per NSFAS portal

Other cases were found to be affected by issues such as academic eligibility, income thresholds, invalid information, and other NSFAS related circumstances.

It is important to note that each student's case was assessed individually, meaning that the outcome differs from student to student.

Due to the confidential nature of the information contained in the feedback document, and in compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), we will not be publicly sharing the full spreadsheet. The document contains personal and confidential student information, including names, student numbers, ID numbers and individual NSFAS outcomes.

Students are encouraged to contact the above mentioned PASMA representatives in regards to their individual feedback, so that it can be communicated to them privately and confidentially.

We believe that students have a right to know the outcome of the cases they submitted. At the same time, we have a responsibility to protect the personal information and confidentiality of every student who trusted us with their details.

We thank all students who participated in this process. PASMA will continue to advocate for students whose funding issues remain unresolved and will continue engaging with the relevant structures to ensure that student concerns are properly escalated.

A physical meeting with NSFAS will be held regarding the eligible unresolved issues, and more feedback will be provided on those cases.

The Pan Africanist Student Movement of Azania (PASMA) wishes to assure all Sport students at CPUT that we are fully aware of the challenges currently affecting your academic programme. These include the ongoing delays in Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placements, the non-release of Term 1 marks, and other staffing-related concerns within the department.

We understand the frustration and uncertainty these challenges have caused. Many students have been left without WIL placements, while the continued delay in the release of Term 1 marks has negatively affected students, particularly those who require their academic transcripts when applying for placement opportunities.

PASMA has been actively engaging the Faculty on these matters. As a result of the pressure and continuous engagement by PASMA, the Faculty confirmed yesterday that a substitute lecturer has now been appointed to fill the vacancy created following the conclusion of Mr Young's contract. While we welcome this development, we maintain that students should not have experienced disruptions to their learning due to delays in filling the vacant post.

PASMA's deployed Faculty Representatives, together with her CSRC , will meet with Faculty Management tomorrow, 19 July 2026 to discuss the challenges facing Sport students and to demand urgent interventions. The meeting will focus on:

• The urgent placement of all students who are still awaiting Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placements.
• The immediate release of outstanding Term 1 marks and a clear explanation for the delay.
• A comprehensive update on the Faculty's plan to resolve the current challenges affecting Sport students.
• Improved communication between the Faculty and students to ensure that concerns are addressed promptly.

PASMA remains committed to protecting the interests of students and ensuring that no student is academically disadvantaged due to administrative shortcomings. We will provide students with feedback following the meeting and will continue to engage the Faculty until these matters are satisfactorily resolved.

PASMA Mowbray has arranged transport for students undertaking teaching practice from the 21st of July to the 15th of August 2026.

Shuttle Details:
- Stanhope to Mowbray Campus : Departs 06:30 daily. Stops at Groote Schuur Primary and Rondebosch Primary where student teachers are placed.
- Catsville to Mowbray : Departs 06:40 daily, direct to Mowbray.
- Mowbray to Town (D6) : Departs 07:00 daily via St Peter’s. Stops at Salt River, Woodstock and Zonnebloem.

Please be on time and coordinate at each stop so that pickups run smoothly. Your time in the classroom is not just practice ,it is power. Teach with courage, purpose, and pride, because the minds you shape today will lead tomorrow.

PASMA notes the call for applications for the DSI-NRF Postgraduate Funding 2027, open to CPUT students.

This funding is a critical opportunity for students pursuing Honours, Master’s, and Doctoral studies to advance research, innovation, and academic excellence without financial barriers.

To qualify, applicants must be new or continuing Honours, Master’s, or Doctoral students with a minimum average of 65% in their previous degree. Funding is available as Full Cost of Study for South African citizens and permanent residents, with limited Partial Cost of Study awards also offered. Application periods differ by level of study, with Master’s and Doctoral applications closing on 3 July 2026, and Honours General applications remaining open until 23 November 2026.

All applications must be submitted online at https://nrfconnect.nrf.ac.za. Students are advised that CPUT internal screening deadlines may apply and should therefore consult their faculty or the Centre for Postgraduate Studies.
