Make Your Mark - Reading Programme: Session 3

Last week, our young readers explored The Word Collector by Peter H. Reynolds, a beautiful story that celebrates the magic and power of words.

Inspired by Jerome's love of collecting words, the children became word collectors themselves through the creative art of Blackout Poetry. Using existing text, they uncovered hidden poems and meaningful messages, proving that creativity can be found in the most unexpected places.

Our Reading Programme continues to inspire creativity and new ways of seeing the world!

In Session 2, we explored Sky Color by Peter H. Reynolds. The story follows Marisol, who is faced with painting the sky for a group mural, only to discover there is no blue paint! By observing the beauty of sunsets, twilight, and the night sky, she learns that the sky can be much more than just blue.

Through this story, our young readers discovered that creativity grows when we look closely, think differently, and challenge our assumptions. Participants then expressed their own unique ideas through colourful art activities inspired by the many colours of the sky.

For National Science Week, the City’s Library & Information Services Department took learners on an inspiring journey to Amazon HQ in Cape Town. Bringing together high school students from communities across the city, the event offered opportunities to learn, experiment, and imagine new possibilities.

Our Reading Programme is off to a wonderful start!

In the first of our five sessions, we explored Ish by Peter H. Reynolds and discovered that things don't have to be perfect to be meaningful. The story encouraged us to let go of perfectionism and embrace the joy of self-expression through "ish-ful" thinking.

Participants then got creative with crayons, pastels and markers, creating their own unique "ish" artworks.

There's a special kind of magic found within library walls! Observatory Library facilitated a community engagement in support of Women's month. From engaging story times for little ones in our Pram Jam session to learning and support with SA Police Woodstock and Families South Africa Western Cape in our Women's Clinic. It's clear this community hub supports everyone.
We thank the Friends of Observatory Library for sponsoring the lovely refreshments.
