INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CLEAN AIR FOR BLUE SKIES AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

Today, 04 September 2026, the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality’s Environmental Management Department - pollution control officers, in collaboration with Environmental Interns from the Matlosana Local Municipality, conducted an International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies Awareness Campaign at United Primary School in Vaal Reefs.
The morning programme commenced with a fun walk, encouraging learners and participants to promote healthy lifestyles while raising awareness about the importance of clean air and a healthy environment. The fun walk was followed by an energetic aerobics session, creating an enjoyable and engaging atmosphere while demonstrating the importance of physical activity and overall well-being.
The campaign aimed to raise awareness among learners about the importance of clean air for human health and the environment, while highlighting the link between air pollution and climate change. The learners participated in an educational session where they were taught about climate change, the causes and effects of air pollution, and the importance of taking collective action to protect the environment.
As part of the programme, the learners received lunch packs as a gesture of appreciation for their participation. The awareness campaign also included a tree planting activity, where learners were given an opportunity to plant trees under the guidance of a professional Environmental ManagementDepartment - pollution control officers. This practical activity empowered the learners to take an active role in environmental conservation and taught them the importance of trees in improving air quality and supporting a healthier environment.
The campaign encouraged environmental awareness among the learners and conveyed the message that protecting air quality is a shared responsibility. Through continued education, physical activities and practical environmental initiatives such as tree planting, communities can contribute towards cleaner air, a healthier environment and a more sustainable future.

SINGLE WHIP STEPS IN TO SUPPORT LEARNERS AT PHAKEDI PRIMARY SCHOOL
Today 01 September 2026: The Office of the Single Whip of the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, Councillor Jeffrey Lesie, has shown that a meaningful leadership goes beyond words, following a personal intervention to support disadvantaged learners at Phakedi Primary School in Makwassie.
Councillor Lesie was deeply saddened to learn that some learners at the school were attending classes without proper school shoes. Concerned that a lack of basic school necessities could affect the learners’ dignity, confidence and ability to fully participate in their education, he decided to take action.
Going beyond the resources available through his office’s programmes, Councillor Lesie reached into his own pocket to purchase school shoes for learners in need.
The intervention forms part of a programme run by the Office of the Single Whip, which is specifically aimed at supporting disadvantaged learners within communities. The programme seeks to ensure that learners who come from vulnerable circumstances receive assistance with essential school requirements.

However, where the available budget cannot reach, Councillor Lesie has shown a willingness to personally bridge the gap.
For him, the principle is simple: no learner should have to face the school day without basic necessities such as proper school shoes simply because their family cannot afford them.
The provision of school shoes may appear to be a small gesture, but for the learners and their families, it represents much more. It restores dignity, inspires confidence and sends a powerful message that their education and future are valued.
The intervention at Phakedi Primary School is a reflection of the importance of leaders remaining connected to the realities faced by communities and responding to challenges with compassion and action.
The Office of the Single Whip it is committed to supporting disadvantaged learners and contributing towards an environment where every child has an opportunity to attend school with dignity and focus on their education.
