At DFW Fire & Rescue NPC, we do not believe that emergency response starts when a fire truck arrives.

It starts much earlier.

It starts with the person who sees the smoke.

The farmer who notices something unusual. The neighbour who hears the crash. The member who sends the first WhatsApp message. The person who drops a pin. The responder who answers the radio. The landowner who opens a gate.
The neighbour who arrives with a fire unit, first aid kit or simply the right information.

That is the DFW formula. And it works.

DFW has built a highly effective emergency-response network around one simple principle:

COMMUNICATION + PEOPLE + EQUIPMENT + INVOLVEMENT = FASTER RESPONSE

We have the vehicles. We have the equipment. We have the responders. We have a 24/7 Control Room. We have a dedicated WhatsApp emergency network. We have a direct radio communication system.

And we have invested heavily in our communications infrastructure, including renewed radio equipment, upgraded long range antennas and excellent radio reception.

Our operational fleet includes specialised response vehicles, 4x4 fire trucks and fully equipped cruisers with 700 liter skid units and First aid equipment, ready to respond when incidents occur.

But none of that is the real secret.

THE REAL STRENGTH OF DFW IS THE PEOPLE CONNECTED TO IT.

Our members are not simply names on a database.

They are our eyes and ears across farms, estates, businesses and communities.

And sometimes, in those first critical minutes, they become our hands as well.

That is why we do not see DFW membership as simply “selling an emergency service”.

We are inviting people to become part of a community-driven emergency-response system.

A system where everyone has a role.

A system where information moves quickly.

A system where neighbours help neighbours.

A system where the first person to identify the problem can immediately connect with a Control Room, responders and resources.

Because in a serious emergency, the first 10 or 15 minutes can determine everything.

📱 WhatsApp gives us the first picture.

Where? What happened? When? Who is involved? How many?
A pin, to know the true exact location of the address. A photograph. The first warning.

📻 Radio gives us the live situation in clear terms.

The wind has changed. The fire crossed the road. The patient has deteriorated. The access gate is locked. The water point is empty. A second vehicle is involved. Another property is now threatened.

This allows the DFW Control Room, property owners and responders to communicate directly while an incident unfolds.

Many of our responders carry handheld radios and several of our response vehicles are permanently radio equipped.

For our members, the DFW radio network creates something extremely valuable:

And yet, we would love it when we would see even more property and landowners making use of this fantastic opportunity.

Where a neighbouring farmer can open the gate before emergency vehicles arrive. Where the person closest to the emergency already knows what is happening.

That is not theory.

THAT IS HOW DFW OPERATES already for years.

We have seen it work time and again.

And the larger the network becomes, the stronger every member becomes.

Because your neighbour's eyes may one day protect your property. Your radio report may save someone else's home. Your photograph may help us determine what resources to send.
Your early warning may stop a fire before it reaches the next farm.
Your information may prevent another vehicle from driving into danger.

And sometimes your willingness to help may make you the first person on scene.

Wind and fire is a bad combination.

Garbage fire nearly ends in disaster.

Paarl, 4 September 2026

The private DFW Fire & Rescue npc received a report of a startup fire at the remote area behind keerweder road. It was not clear if it was a structural fire or field fire at the time of the report at 11.57 hrs.

The DFW received from one of its members 3 whatsapps 11.57 hrs.
A the exact location
B a call for help
C a small 2 sentence report, namely a fire at a cottage and help needed.

With no time to loose 11.59 hrs, THE DFW scrambled a 4x4 cruiser with an UHP unit and first aid team, who, on their way, asked the DFW controller per radio 12.01 hr to pass all available info to Paarl Fire and to request them to assist as well.

The DFW reached the position on 12.07 hrs, a record in response and in 1 minute the first water landed on the flames and at 12.16 the fire was under control.

300 liter water from the DFW cruiser did the job, carefully made to work by DFW fire responder Anthea Carlse .

The fire started further down the road, with a heap of cuttings set alight. The wind, with gusts up to 100 km/ hr did the rest and only by the fast response with the right equipment, a serious situation was prevented.

At any fire, the first response determines the outcome for many hrs after.

If we get the right info on time, in principle all fires can remain minor incidents...let us all work towards to fast and adequate reporting.

When you get called out to share your passion and the audience is job seeking orientated, you go full out.

DFW FIRE&RESCUE volunteers share valuable information with a big smile to a great group.

Paarl, 4 September 2026

The DFW private volunteer responder group, received a request from Sonop primary school at Keerweder road Paarl to share passion with the 4-5 year old about being a firemen or women.

It was unbelievable how well informed these youngsters were and how passionate. We saw nurses, doctors, police and firemen, but also bankers and lawyers, all dressed to perform.

On girl was dressed normal with a baby doll with her and when I asked what her job dream was, she looked at me and said that she wanted to be like her mother.

There is real hope for our future.

Needless to say, we showed the fast fire response unit, sounded the sirines, used the radio and we all hosed some water.

The school is just around the corner from us and when we drive by, they all always wave and smile...what a job!

The DFW is a non profit volunteer driven Fire and Rescue entity, set up to assist its community and members alike.

Visiting schools and bringing awareness is one of the ways to fight fires.

We thank Sonop and its great teacher team for doing an awesome job.

Mva Sonstraal road ( another one).
3 vehicles involded, minor injuries only.

DFW Fire & Rescue npc and Drakenstein Traffic worked the scene.

Paarl, 4 September 2026

This afternoon a sudden manouvre on the narrow passage near the Havequa bospad/ sonstraal road turnof, caused havoc.

3 vehicles got badly damaged, 2 in the roadside ditch.

The DFW responders, so called for, brought a dfw cruiser with 700 liter skid unit and fire extinguishers and the big first aid bags, but luckily only egos were scratched.

Paarl traffic officers had their hands full, but still.managed to guide traffic safely through.

We keep reporting about the Sonstraal road, as it is becoming a serious issue with the many accidents which happen there, and the road side trenches and missing warning signs.

Talks were held this week and promises made.

We thank all who responded for their professionalism.

The community calls — and DFW responds. 🚨

The Lantana Community Fire Safety project.

Here's a truth every household should know: the first five minutes of a fire decide what the next five hours will look like.

Before any truck arrives, it's the people already there who can slow a fire down, guide loved ones to safety, and turn a tragedy into a near-miss. First response changes everything.

So when a small group of men in Lantana Street, Paarl — all worried about their families' safety, and fire in particular — reached out and asked us to come and teach them, the DFW, as a non-profit and public benefit organisation, heard the call and made the effort.

Two DFW vehicles and crew rolled into Lantana Street, and we got to work.

We built a reporting pyramid.

One member was appointed key communicator and added to the DFW private alert group; everyone else links to him.

In a fire, the group sends three quick WhatsApps to the key communicator:
1) a pin location,
2) a photo or photos, and
3) what's happening — and clearly, that help is needed.

The moment any first responders arrive (police, traffic, medical or fire), another WhatsApp with an update and picture keeps the picture sharp. From the first WhatsApp serie of 3 received, DFW alerts the right response through our private control room and radio network. Clear information in — fast, accurate help out.

We talked medical emergencies. With EMS Metro ambulances stretched thin, precise information saves lives. Each member learned to gather the vital facts about a patient — what we call triage — so the right help can be sent, fast.

Then we turned to fire itself. The men were keen, so we trained them on tackling a fire in its startup phase.
As part of DFW's Community Emergency Responder (CER) programme — for the people, by the people — each was handed a free fire extinguisher and a hi-viz jacket for on-scene recognition.

We ran them through deploying a fast-attack line off the DFW tanker/pumper — setting the nozzle, managing water flow, and, crucially, who does what: guiding children and the elderly clear, securing the area, making sure everyone is out of the danger zone, while one or two engage the fire with extinguishers or a DFW line.

One thing we always make clear: DFW is not a replacement for the Fire Brigade.
On scene, we work under the municipal fire brigade's incident commander.
The municipality is the prime institution for firefighting — DFW is the added value, the trained hands on the ground in the critical early minutes.

To date, DFW has equipped and trained more than 40 CER members across the settlements where fire risk runs highest. And as a private non-profit with a driven community involvement and upliftment spirit, we'll keep educating and assisting for as long as our budget allows.

Because safety isn't something that only arrives on a fire truck. It starts with us — all of us. 🧡

🚨 Medical Call – Keerweder Road, Paarl 🚨

Franschhoek First Responders assisted Mike Charlie 1 with a medical call on Keerweder Road in Paarl.

One patient sustained moderate injuries and was treated on scene.

🔥 WHAT MATTERED MOST WAS WHAT DID NOT BURN.!!!

After a serious fire, everybody sees the flames. The smoke. The damaged ground. The blackened vegetation.

Hopefully The fire trucks !.

But sometimes the most important photograph is the one showing something still standing.

A home. A guesthouse. A w**e cellar. A thatched roof. A farm building. A business. Something that could very easily have been lost.

That is what fire preparedness is really about.

Not becoming a firefighter. Not taking unnecessary risks.
Not trying to fight a fire that has already become too dangerous.

It is about recognising the problem early.

Raising the alarm quickly. Giving responders the correct location. Knowing what equipment is available. Knowing where the water is.
Knowing how emergency vehicles will enter. Knowing what can safely be switched off. Getting people out.

And, where a fire is still small and conditions allow it, knowing how to act before those first few flames become an uncontrollable incident.

DFW Fire & Rescue has seen the difference that early action can make. We have also seen what happens when precious minutes are lost.

That is why our campaign is called: THE FIRST 10 MINUTES

Because when the smoke eventually clears, the question is not only:

“What burned?”

It should also be:

“WHAT DID WE MANAGE TO SAVE?”

And that begins long before fire season reaches its peak.

Ask yourself another uncomfortable question:

If DFW walked onto your property tomorrow and asked:

“Show us your fire plan.” What would you show us? A file? An extinguisher? A hose?

Or could your people actually explain:

🔥 who calls for help
🔥 how they send the exact location
🔥 who evacuates the building
🔥 where everyone assembles
🔥 who accounts for staff or family
🔥 where emergency vehicles enter
🔥 where your water supply is
🔥 what equipment is available

A plan should work in real life — not only on paper.

Motorvehicle accident leaves drivers and passengers miraculous mostly only slightly injured.

DFW Fire & Rescue NPC FIRST AID responders quickly on scene.

Paarl, 30th Augustus 2026

This afternoon, an elderly couple in their vehicle collided with a young man and his vehicle right at the Engen petrol station opposite Drakenstein Mall lustigan pad Paarl.

2 DFW emergency first aid and fire responder teams arrived within 8 minutes, secured the scene and took care of the patients. Despite the impact, clearly visible on both vehicles, the patients only were bandaged for minor injuries and the Ambulance was cancelled.

Police and towing services arrived later and the vehicles were towed.

The importance of the DFW as a Non Profit and Public Benefit Organisation becomes more and more clear.

These accident responses are done by DFW volunteers, on a Pro Bono bases as long as budget allows.
