Umdoni Park Conservation

Umdoni Park Conservation The 210ha Umdoni Park in Pennington is home to a myriad of unique Flora and Fauna and is a true gem of the upper South Coast.

This page will keep you updated on all things conservation related within the Park. The main purpose of this page is to promote the long term viability of the Umdoni Park Forest as an indigenous ecological gem. The park was gifted to the people of the area by Sir Frank Reynolds in the 1920's and is administered by the Umdoni Park Trust.It has remained largely untouched by human development plans a

nd should remain so for the foreseeable future.If this page can instill a love of nature in as many people as possible, then I am sure Sir Frank would be proud-wherever he might be at this time.

Ever walked the Umdoni trails and got dripped on? well here is one of the "culprits" that was kind enough to pose for a photo. They are well known for the phenomenon of ‘rain tree’ produced by the constant dripping of processed tree sap through the bodies of clusters of nymphs and adults feeding on the tree.

Beautiful Emperor Moth (from the Saturniidae group and probably from the Aurivillius species) photographed in Pennington. I saw my first one at the Umdoni Clubhouse in March 2021 which had a bit of damage to the wings, but this one was in very good condition and flew away shortly after the photos were taken... privileged!!

African Harrier Hawk (Kaalwangvalk) This bird is a common resident in Umdoni. The yellow on its face flushes red when excited, thus, this bird was chilled while raiding the bird nests in the palm tree.
