MEDIA STATEMENT.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
28 May 2026

*Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality Successfully Contains Fire at Landfill Site*.

Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality wishes to inform residents and all relevant stakeholders that a localized fire at the municipal landfill site was successfully contained and extinguished earlier today.

At approximately 15:30, a waste collection vehicle offloaded a mixture of general and garden waste at the landfill’s designated working face. Upon initial inspection by site spotters during the offloading process, no signs of smoke or combustion were observed.

Approximately 10 minutes later, landfill personnel detected an unusual odor in the vicinity. Within 15 to 30 minutes, flames were observed emerging from the newly deposited waste. Site personnel responded immediately, activating established firefighting protocols to isolate and suppress the fire.

We are pleased to confirm that the fire has been successfully controlled. There were no injuries reported, and operations at the site continue to be monitored to prevent any further risks.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident was likely caused by concealed combustible or smoldering material contained within the waste load delivered to the site.

The Municipality remains committed to maintaining safety standards at our waste facilities and urges members of the public and businesses to ensure that hazardous, flammable, or smoldering materials are not disposed of alongside general domestic waste.
