ANC Dullah Omar Region Statement on the Outcomes of the Regional Elections Team Elections Assessment Meeting
13 November 2021
On 11 November 2021 the ANC DOR RET met to convene different Local Election Teams, Leagues and Alliance Partners to assess the outcomes of the 2021 LGE in the City of Cape Town. The RET met together with the 13 LET's from across the region together with our alliance partners and other progressive forces to assess the overall 2021 LGE Campaign and the outcomes of the municipal elections.
The Meeting discussed the pre-elections phase in its entirety, as well as the whole elections period to assess the outcomes and identify issues that can assist the organisation to improve in future elections.
The meeting noted that initial stringent Covid19 gathering protocols, the uncertainty on the year in which the LGE will be held, as well as the demarcation process running alongside the start of the campaign impacted the overall state of readiness for the campaign.
Due to the short time period for this election campaign, the campaign itself also started concurrently with the BGM processes for candidate selections. This presented a challenge where the campaign was proceeding without finalisation of who the candidates we were campaigning for were as the selection process was still underway. Issues of disputes and ANC members de-campaigning the organisation were also more profound in our base areas. Our structures have noted the names and details of ANC members who embarked on de-campaigning the ANC during these LGE and this information has been relayed to the provincial structure for disciplinary action.
The lack of resources (both funds and marketing materials) had a massive impact on the campaign. This also meant that our Voting District (VD) teams did not have sufficient protective gear and equipment to withstand the harsh weather conditions on the actual day of elections.
A number of issues experienced inside the voting stations led to the slow pace of voting and voters ultimately abandoning the long queues in the rain. These have been relayed to the IEC for rectification and also for consideration in future planning.
Our biggest challenge as an organisation, is our low voter registration, particularly in our base areas. The REC will be working with branches to implement a continuous voter registration and voter education program between now and the next national elections to ensure that we increase our numbers of registered voters.
The ANC in the Dullah Omar Region thanks all our dedicated volunteers who selflessly campaigned for the ANC during these elections. We are also grateful to all our membership who took the time to fully participate in the lengthy selection process to identify the correct candidates. We also thank all our voters and supporters who came out on a wet and cold day to make their democratic choice and place their confidence in the ANC.
Overall the ANC retained the majority of our wards (32), won 1 new ward and lost 1 ward to the opposition. The ANC also secured 10 PR positions within the council.
