MEC BUTHELEZI CONVENES STAKEHOLDER SUMMIT TO UNLOCK ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES AND ASSURE INVESTOR SAFETY AT BABANANGO GAME RESERVE

BABANANGO, 4 JUNE 2026 - In a decisive move to protect regional development, the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, today convened a critical Stakeholder Summit at the Babanango Game Reserve. The summit was specifically called to ensure that economic opportunities are unlocked for local communities while sending a clear, firm signal to investors that their investments are safe in KwaZulu-Natal.

The intervention follows recent protest actions affecting operations at the reserve. Meeting with Amakhosi, reserve management, and community members, MEC Buthelezi emphasized that Babanango falls under the Zulu Monarch’s authority and must be respected as a vital economic engine.

The MEC highlighted the project’s profound local impact, commending investor Mr. Hellmuth Weisser and management for creating approximately 250 local jobs and providing critical infrastructure like boreholes and Wi-Fi to neighbouring schools.

“The objective is to create a platform where all voices can be heard while safeguarding investments that bring employment opportunities and socio-economic development to our communities,” said MEC Buthelezi.

Warning that disruptions jeopardise tourism and future capital, the MEC urged parties not to politicize grievances. To institutionalize this stability, he proposed a COGTA-led representative committee to resolve disputes through proper channels. The Department remains strictly committed to securing a peaceful, pro-growth environment where both community partnerships and investor assets thrive.

KZN COGTA ISSUES URGENT UPDATE ON SEVERE WEATHER: SNOWFALL CLOSES SANI PASS, INCLEMENT CONDITIONS CAUSE DAMAGE IN UMLALAZI

ULUNDI, 05 JUNE 2026 – The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs is monitoring severe weather conditions impacting various parts of the province.

Temperatures have plummeted significantly, particularly in areas surrounding the Drakensberg.

Heavy snowfall has been reported on the Lesotho side of Sani Pass, forcing the immediate closure of this route. Motorists and travelers from KZN intending to cross into Lesotho are advised to suspend their trips until the route is declared safe.

Furthermore, a severe storm yesterday afternoon swept through the uMlalazi Local Municipality, uprooting trees and damaging residential roofs.

The KZN Provincial Disaster Management Centre confirms that emergency response teams are on the ground, and the full extent of the destruction will be known once formal assessments are concluded.

With freezing conditions persisting, KZN COGTA MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi has urged residents to prioritise household safety.

"We appeal to our communities to exercise extreme caution as they keep warm. If you are using braziers or generators, ensure they are operated safely and in well-ventilated spaces to avoid tragedy. Most importantly, protect our children keep them far away from heat-producing appliances and never leave them unattended," said MEC Buthelezi.

The KZN Provincial Disaster Management Centre is working in tandem with all municipalities to ensure a swift response to any weather-related incidents. Motorists across the province are strongly urged to drive with caution on slippery roads.

COGTA wants to reassure motorists, truck drivers, and the general public that, according to SAWS assessments, the expected snow is not anticipated to cause disruptions or closures over the Van Reenen’s Pass region of the N3 highway. KZN’s primary economic route remains open and safe. However, we urge all road users to keep a safe following distance, turn on their headlights, and drive with extra care in the wet and cold conditions.

Safety Advice for Communities:
• Look After Livestock: Farmers in high-lying areas and districts close to the Drakensberg must move their livestock and pets to adequate shelter and warmth to protect them from the severe cold.
• Hikers and Tourists: Anyone planning trips or hikes up the Drakensberg mountains should put those plans on hold. Mountain weather is unpredictable, and conditions can change rapidly.
• Avoid Fake News: We urge the public not to share unverified weather warnings or voice notes on social media, as this causes unnecessary panic. Always rely on official updates from SAWS.

Our Provincial Disaster Management Centre has activated the necessary response protocols and placed municipal disaster teams on high alert. Emergency crews are monitoring high-risk areas closely and are ready to step in should the weather take an unexpected turn for the worse.
