The heritage site visit continued from Ghost Mountain-Mkhuze to Border Cave. This is a Heritage site where an infant died and was buried around 100 000 years ago. Her body was painted with ochre before it was buried in a shallow grave, along with a decorated shell. In 1942 scientists excavated her bones, stained red with ochre. Among the bones they also found the shell. This is believed to be one of the earliest deliberate burials found worldwide. The people who lived in Border Cave during that time may have had some idea of time and space. Here we perhaps even see the beginnings of abstract thoughts and religion.
