RASSIE AND THE BOYS MAKE US PROUD AGAIN!

Once more, they carry a nation on their backs. Once more, they deliver.

This is who we are. This is what we do.

IT IS SEPTEMBER. IT IS HERITAGE MONTH.

We pause. We remember. We recommit.

Heritage is not a monument. It is not a plaque on a wall.

Heritage is memory. Living memory.

It is the story told at the fireside. The song passed from mother to child. The grave that holds our history. The land that cradles it.

Heritage binds yesterday to today. It binds today to tomorrow.

Heritage Month belongs to no single group. No single culture. No single tongue. It belongs to all who call this province home.

And we begin, as we must, with the First Peoples of this land — the Khoisan. Their footprint is the oldest footprint here. Their heritage is our foundation.

When I launched this campaign, Engangeni Ngesango Iyafohla in 2024, I knew a lot still needed to be done. I also acknowledged that government cannot succeed alone in dealing with the crime of undocumented foreign nationals.

Today, we continued inspecting businesses employing undocumented foreign nationals in our province.

We call on all stakeholders to be part of this campaign — and to be part of the solution, legally.

I call on all parties to find a speedy resolution to the sugar industry strike. The shutdown of mills is putting thousands of jobs and dependent industries at risk.

This industry is too important to our economy. We cannot afford these disruptions.

The strike comes at a critical moment, just as various stakeholders have barely managed to save Tongaat Hulett from collapse: The timing could not be worse.

USUTHU OLUMPONDONDE | A LEADER FOR ALL SEASONS.

Two weeks after celebrating his 95th birthday, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi passed away on 9 September 2023.

His life had traversed an extraordinary span of South African history — from the reign of King Solomon kaDinuzulu, through apartheid and the struggle over the country's political future, to the establishment and consolidation of democratic government.

He was a leader whose public life crossed generations and whose responsibilities changed with the seasons of the country he served.

Today, KwaZulu-Natal remembers his contribution to its history and to the broader story of South Africa.

USUTHU OLUMPONDONDE | A LEADER FOR ALL SEASONS.

Alongside his political and governmental responsibilities, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi held the traditional office of Prime Minister to the Zulu Monarch and Nation across successive reigns.

This placed him within a long tradition of service to the Zulu Royal House while his public responsibilities continued to evolve.

USUTHU OLUMPONDONDE | A LEADER FOR ALL SEASONS.

During his ten years as Minister of Home Affairs, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi served as Acting President of South Africa on 22 occasions.

It was a distinction that reflected the responsibilities entrusted to him within the democratic state.

From traditional leadership to national government, his public life crossed institutional boundaries and generations.

USUTHU OLUMPONDONDE | A LEADER FOR ALL SEASONS.

South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994 opened a new chapter in Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi's public life.
He became national Minister of Home Affairs, serving under Presidents Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki.

The transition from apartheid to democracy demanded that political leaders navigate a new national reality.

For Prince Buthelezi, it meant carrying his experience from decades of traditional and political leadership into the institutions of the new democratic South Africa.

A different season.A continuing commitment to public service.
