This is usually a celebratory occasion - the Caregiver gets to spoil the child, the child gets a new uniform and stationery items - perhaps for the first time in their life - and no longer has to go to school embarrassed or ashamed!

As we reflect on the 2025/26 year, we are filled with gratitude for every person, family, business and organisation that has been part of the Thandanani journey.

Together, we supported 510 households and 1,281 children across six communities in the KZN Midlands, celebrated 103 families graduating from our programme, helped 33 young entrepreneurs start businesses, and continued investing in early childhood development and stronger communities.

This year also saw the launch of the Friends of Thandanani Foundation in the USA, creating exciting new opportunities for international support, while two Dambuza crรจches were transformed into inspiring learning spaces for more than 130 young children.

None of this would be possible without our incredible supporters. Thank you for helping us create lasting change, one child, one family and one community at a time. โค๏ธ

Sixteen-year-old Nolwazi and her brother Sihle live with their older cousin, who takes care of them following the death of their parents.

Nolwazi is currently in Grade 10 and loves school except for the fact that her school uniform is very old, too small for her and well-worn. So when Thandanani arrived with school uniform vouchers at the start of the school year, both Nolwazi and Sihle were overjoyed.

Nolwazi said, โ€œThe new school uniform will give me confidence. I wonโ€™t be embarrassed anymore, and I will be able to join some of the activities which I have been avoiding because I was afraid of being mocked and teased.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t wait to look just like other kids at school!โ€ she said.

Seventeen-year-old Nomvula was five months pregnant when her grandmother discovered the news.

Shocked and disappointed, her grandmother initially refused to support her, fearing Nomvulaโ€™s education would end.

The Sibisi family faced tremendous hardship following the loss of their daughter - not only the emotional trauma of grief, but also the loss of a significant income and the added responsibility of caring for their orphaned grandchildren.

Thandanani supported the family through its ๐— ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐—ช๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ธ programme - a series of sessions designed to help families process grief, trace their roots, and explore their history through genograms and family trees.

The children responded particularly well, learning about extended family members they had never met. For the grandfather, building the family tree was deeply emotional, yet he was heartened by his grandchildren's curiosity. He thanked the fieldworker for her gentleness, respect, and for involving the whole family throughout.
