SADESMO DUT Midlands Branch Statement on Unconducive Students Residences.
The South African Democratic Students' Movement (SADESMO), the student wing of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), stands firmly in the interest of our fellow students regarding their living conditions at the Durban University of Technology (DUT). We recognize that student accommodation is not merely a necessity but a fundamental aspect of the overall educational experience. Therefore, it is vital for us to address the pressing issue pertaining to the allocation of students in unconducive shack such as 99 Kenwyn House.
We urge students who have been allocated to shacks, or any other substandard residence, to refuse acceptance of such accommodations. It is unacceptable for students to be placed in living conditions that are not conducive to their health and academic success. Our commitment to fair treatment for all students compels us to highlight the disparity between the fees paid and the quality of services provided in our residences.
Students currently face exorbitant accommodation fees that, in many instances, do not reflect the quality and amenities that should be guaranteed. It is imperative that the administration understands that they are not doing us a favor by providing housing; rather, we are paying for these essential services, and they need to ensure that the standards live up to the expectations set by the fees we are charged.
No student should have to endure unacceptable living conditions, and SADESMO stands united in demanding that DUT housing rectify these issues. We call for transparency and accountability from the housing division to meet the needs of every student, ensuring that all residences uphold a consistent standard that is commensurate with the fees being collected.
In conclusion, SADESMO DUT Midlands Branch reiterates our commitment to advocating for student welfare, particularly concerning accommodation standards. We encourage our fellow students to assert their rights and refuse to accept placements in unconducive residences. Together, we can strive for an environment where every student feels safe, supported, and valued in their living arrangements. It is time for DUT to respond to our concerns and provide housing that truly reflects the values of equality and respect for all students.
