This week, 200 elderly and disabled residents took part in the annual Golden Games at Piesang Valley Sports Field.

The national programme promotes active ageing and healthy living.

Not even rugby’s Greatest Rivalry Tour could match the competitive spirit, thrilling games and unexpected wins on display at the Bitou Golden Games this week.



This is as the Bitou Municipality was hosted to the annual sporting games for 200 elderly and disabled residents at the Piesang Valley Sports field.

The golden games is a national programme aimed at promoting active ageing, which has a positive impact on the health of senior citizens and disabled people.

The games are not only limited Bitou, as winners progress to regional, provincial, and even national levels.

The winners of this week’s games which included the jukskei, 100m, 200m run/walk events among other indigenous games will represent Bitou at the regional games in Mosselbay on 10 September.

Beyond the competitive action which impressed Bitou councillors including Executive Mayor, Cllr Jessica Kamkam, speaker of council Cllr Mavis Busakwe, Cllr Annelise Olivier, Cllr Claude Terblanche and Cllr Renicia Willemse, the day was centred around building camaraderie between the elderly.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, veteran, Maria “Aunty Flessie” Pienaar thanked the municipality for its continued support for elderly clubs.

Aunty Flessie who is the Chairperson of the New Horizons Pensioners club said that this day was not about eating and playing sport.

She said it was a day that allowed for elderly of all Bitou Wards an opportunity to reunite with old acquaintances and share tips on maintaining a healthy body and ageing gracefully.

“Since 2017, the municipality has not let us down, even though there are ups and downs, the municipality still delivers.

“I want to congratulate all the winners who will be representing Bitou in the following stages, but I also want to encourage everyone else to exercise and practice hard for next time,” she added.

Meanwhile, Mayor Kamkam, thanked the elderly residents for spending the day with Bitou.

“We are very grateful that you got to spend a day with us,” added Cllr Kamkam.

“Bitou Municipality will continue supporting all programmes that uplift and celebrate the elderly," she added.

| On Friday, 28 August 2026, the Office of the Executive Mayor continued its Mandela Month Clean-Up Campaign aimed at addressing illegal dumping in communities, in partnership with the Bitou Municipality Waste Management Section.

This week, the campaign focused on an illegal dumping site in , located in front of Usave, near the popular dam that recently caused damage to nearby houses, as well as an area next to the Assemblies of God Church in Phase 3.

The clean-up campaign was attended by officials from the Municipality’s political offices and members of the Waste Management team. A significant amount of accumulated waste was collected, loaded into skip bins and removed from the area using municipal trucks.

The campaign also provided an opportunity for the Municipality to remind residents that illegal dumping poses a serious threat to communities, the environment and public health. Waste that is dumped illegally can contribute to environmental pollution, create health hazards and negatively affect the appearance of neighbourhoods.

Residents are encouraged to make proper use of the skip bins and other waste disposal facilities provided by the Municipality and to take responsibility for disposing of their waste appropriately.
Residents are also encouraged to consider recycling, which can help reduce the amount of waste ending up at illegal dumping sites while creating opportunities for community members to generate an income from recyclable materials.

Residents of KwaNokuthula are encouraged to take pride in their community, keep their surroundings clean and report incidents of illegal dumping. Illegal dumping is contrary to municipal by-laws and undermines efforts to maintain clean, safe and healthy communities.

BITOU MUNICIPALITY SUBMITS 2025/2026 UNAUDITED ANNUAL FINANCIAL STATEMENTS ON TIME

Bitou Municipality is pleased to announce that its Unaudited Annual Financial Statements (AFS) for the 2025/2026 financial year were successfully submitted to the Auditor-General of South Africa on 31 August 2026 at 20:18, in compliance with the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA).

The timely submission of the AFS reflects the Municipality's continued commitment to sound financial management, accountability, good governance, and transparency.

The Municipality extends its appreciation to the Finance Directorate, all Directorates, management, and all officials whose dedication and teamwork contributed to achieving this important legislative milestone.

Bitou Municipality remains committed to strengthening public confidence through responsible financial administration and quality service delivery.

PUBLIC NOTICE | ADVERSE WEATHER ADVISORY
Issued: 30 August 2026

Bitou Municipality advises residents that the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an Adverse Weather Advisory for 3–4 September 2026 due to an approaching Cut-Off Low (COL) weather system.

The system may bring very cold, wet and windy conditions, heavy rainfall with possible localised flooding, damaging winds, and rough sea conditions.

Residents are urged to remain alert, take the necessary precautions, and monitor official communication channels for updates. A further weather update from the South African Weather Service is expected tomorrow.

WARD 2 COUNCILLOR HOLDS REPORT-BACK MEETING IN PIESANG VALLEY

Bitou Ward 2 Councillor Councillor Dave Swart held his Ward Report Back Meeting at the Piesang Valley Community Hall on Thursday evening, 27 August 2026.

The meeting was attended by Director: Planning and Development, Ms Smangaliso Mtengwane; Acting Director: Public Safety, Mr Andile Namntu; Manager: Electricity, Mr Jannie Fourie, as well as residents of Ward 2.

Councillor Swart opened the meeting by welcoming residents and municipal officials and thanking them for attending. He explained that the purpose of the meeting was to provide residents with an update on developments within Council and matters relating to his mandate as the Ward 2 Councillor.

The report back included feedback from meetings dating back from June 2026, covering matters such as municipal expenditure, ongoing projects and developments, including projects related to water, as well as other matters of interest to Ward 2 residents.

Among the Council matters discussed were the report on procurement deviations; employee compliance with monthly Key Performance Indicator (KPI) updates on the Individual Performance Management System (PMS); approval of the Disciplinary Board Terms of Reference; the award of the 2026 Mayoral Partial Bursary Fund; final approved tariffs for NERSA; the Supply Chain Management Policy; and the progress report on the development, evaluation and moderation of municipal job descriptions.

Councillor Swart also provided feedback on the Roads, Transport and Stormwater Capital Project Implementation Plan for the period ending June 2026, as well as the Capital Project Implementation Plan Report for the period ending June 2026.

He further updated residents on projects that are currently underway, as well as planned projects and interventions within the ward and surrounding areas. These included developments and maintenance work relating to High Street, Sewell Street, boardwalks in Main Street, repairs at the Central Beach launch site, water sampling, walkways at the beaches, and baboon related matters, among others.

Following the presentation, residents were given an opportunity to raise questions, concerns and comments. Councillor Swart engaged with residents on the issues raised and provided responses and further clarification where possible.

🔌 | FREE COMPOSTING MATERIAL AVAILABLE

Bitou Municipality invites residents, community groups, farmers, gardeners, and other interested parties to make use of clean composting material (green waste) available at the Bitou Waste Transfer Station.

This initiative forms part of the Municipality’s Organic Waste Diversion Plan, which aims to divert organic waste from landfill sites and promote the beneficial reuse of green waste.

Interested residents and organisations are encouraged to contact the Bitou Waste Management Department for more information.
