MEDIA BRIEFING | Polokwane Municipal Manager Dikgape Makobe has, this morning, briefed the media on the outcomes of the Special Council meeting that was held on Friday 27 September 2019.
The issues, which the Municipal Manager spoke about, included reasons “the municipality wants to spend the rate payers’ money and go on a trip to Finland”. He also elaborated more on revenue protection report that was tabled before special Council meeting to revise penalties for consumers that bypass municipal services such as water and electricity.
The municipality is sending a delegation to Finland so that the Finns can exhibit their ground-breaking capability in sustainable wastewater treatment. Makobe said the municipality has managed to secure close to R3.9 billion from the Department of Water and Sanitation for the coming three years and “we are spending that money by upgrading waste water treatment plant”. He further said for the City to make informed decisions on water issues, the delegation needs to go and see how other cities are doing it.
On revenue, the Municipal Manager said part of the reasons why many municipalities owe ESKOM is because of actions by consumers and business community in those municipalities. These include issues of bridging municipal services, illegally connection to the municipal network and utilising municipal services without paying for them. The municipality has discovered that some of the consumers within Polokwane are bridging electricity.
The Council has given the Municipal Manager a mandate to set up a revenue protection team to check who is buying and who is not buying electricity and water.
