[Day2] The African Languages Intermediate and Senior Phase Enrichment Activity Competitions have concluded at Shangri-La Country Hotel & Spa, with 90 learners participating in Story Reading. The activity aimed at developing learners’ ability to read with meaning, understanding and expression. The competition provided learners with an opportunity to demonstrate their reading proficiency while enhancing their comprehension, confidence and appreciation of African languages.

LIMPOPO DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION MOURNS THE DEATH OF A LEARNER AT MOKUTUPI PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Limpopo Department of Education is deeply saddened by the tragic death of a learner who was electrocuted at Mokutupi Primary School in the Mopani West Education District.

The incident occurred on Thursday 03 September 2026, during lunch break. According to the preliminary report a Grade 7 learner was electrocuted next to the mobile classrooms on the school premises.

A school staff member who Emergency medical services were contacted, while a teacher was dispatched to inform the learner’s parents. The School Governing Body (SGB) was also notified of the incident.

Paramedics subsequently arrived at the school and attended to the learner. Regrettably, the learner was certified dead at the scene.

The Department extends its deepest condolences to the learner’s family, friends, fellow learners, educators and the entire Mokutupi Primary School community during this difficult and painful time, while currently working with the relevant authorities to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. Further assessments will also be conducted to ensure that the safety and security of learners and staff at the school is not compromised.

The Department calls on learners and members of the school community to remain calm and allow the relevant parties to conduct investigations. Psychosocial support will be provided to affected learners and staff to assist them in dealing with the trauma arising from this tragic incident.

[Day 1] Limpopo Department of Education hosted the African Languages Intermediate and Senior Phase Enrichment Activity Competitions at Shangri-La Country Hotel & Spa in Modimolle, under the theme “Bullying.”

Today’s competitions featured three categories: Spelling BEE, Multilingual Spelling BEE and Story Writing, bringing together 73 learners from all 10 Education Districts across the province.

The competitions are aimed at promoting African languages, providing learners with a platform to showcase their linguistic talents, creativity and understanding of African languages, while raising awareness about the impact of bullying in schools and communities.

The two-day Early Childhood Development (ECD) Summit hosted by the Limpopo Department of Education in collaboration with development partners, civil society organisations, academic institutions and other key stakeholders is concluded today at The Ranch Resort outside Polokwane.
Held under the theme “Strengthening Partnerships for Quality Early Childhood Development in Limpopo,” Day 2 focused on deepening knowledge, strengthening collaboration and equipping participants with valuable insights to advance quality ECD across the province.
Participants had the opportunity to engage with experts, raise questions and receive clarity on key issues affecting the ECD sector. The summit concluded with a renewed commitment from all partners to put children at the centre of development and work together towards a stronger and more inclusive ECD sector in Limpopo.

The Limpopo Department of Education in collaboration with Save the Children, Smart Start, Ndlovu Trust, the University of Venda, Thusanang Trust, Blessing Foundation, the National Development Agency (NDA) and other key stakeholders is hosting a two-day Early Childhood Development (ECD) Summit at The Ranch Resort outside Polokwane.

Held under the theme “Strengthening Partnerships for Quality Early Childhood Development in Limpopo,” the summit brings together stakeholders committed to putting children at the centre of development and ensuring that every child has access to quality early childhood development opportunities.

The summit further seeks to strengthen collaboration among government, civil society, academic institutions, development partners and other stakeholders to build a stronger and more inclusive ECD sector in Limpopo.
