World Wildlife Day

Today is not just a celebration of wildlife — it is a reminder of responsibility.

While the world marks this day in different ways, our team is on the ground, actively working behind the scenes on an important conservation initiative that will strengthen biodiversity and ecological resilience at Somkhanda Game Reserve.

Conservation is not symbolic.
It is deliberate.
It is operational.
It is happening in real time.

The Somkhanda Wildlife Foundation supports the reserve by enabling critical work on the ground through partnerships, grants and donor collaboration.

Their survival depends on what we do today. Become part of the solution and click on the link below to support our conservation efforts.

Meet the Pack | Snuffels

Operational excellence starts on the ground — and sometimes, on four legs.

As part of our integrated wildlife guardianship strategy at Somkhanda Game Reserve, we are proud to introduce the first member of our K9 unit in the new “Meet the Pack” series.

🐕 Snuffels
Snuffels is an 18-month-old Groenendael × Belgian Malinois cross. These dogs are known for intelligence, drive, agility, and unwavering work ethic.

Currently undergoing intensive training, she is developing the focus and endurance required for operational deployment in a Big 5 protected area environment. The early signs are exceptional. Her scent commitment, environmental awareness, and handler engagement show tremendous potential.

But beyond the discipline and structure, Snuffels is still very much a young dog at heart.
She is playful, sharp, and highly attuned to her handler. Nothing excites her more than noticing her handler approaching the kennel with intent — instantly switching into full readiness mode, knowing that the next few hours will mean focused work, stimulation, and purpose.

That enthusiasm.
That anticipation.
That drive to engage.

Those are the foundations of an effective conservation K9.

Over the coming weeks, we will continue introducing each member of the K9 unit — the personalities, the capabilities, and the growing operational role they play in strengthening wildlife guardianship and field response capacity.

Welcome to the pack, Snuffels. 🐾

Predator Monitoring in Action at Somkhanda
This week our team conducted key predator management operations at Somkhanda Game Reserve.
On the first evening, we performed a controlled bait and call-up for spotted hyena as part of our ongoing monitoring programme. This follows the structured trap camera surveys we initiated in 2025 to better understand spotted hyena distribution and dynamics across the reserve.
The following evening, we safely darted and fitted a sub-adult male lion with a new satellite tracking collar. Real-time movement data allows us to manage dispersal, territorial behaviour, and proactively mitigate human–wildlife conflict.
Active predator management is essential. It allows us to make informed, adaptive decisions that support both ecological resilience and coexistence with neighbouring communities.
Conservation is not passive — it is deliberate, data-driven, and hands-on.

Yesterday marked another important milestone in large predator management at Somkhanda with the successful relocation of an adult male lion into the reserve.

This highly coordinated operation once again demonstrated why collaboration between conservation partners and game reserves is essential when dealing with complex and high-stakes management challenges such as lion management. Metapopulation strategies are not theoretical concepts — they are practical, working tools that require planning and cooperation across landscapes.

What made this moment even more meaningful was the presence of senior community leadership, who attended the operation and formally welcomed the new male lion into the reserve. Their involvement is a powerful reminder that effective conservation is strongest when it is grounded in community ownership, leadership, and shared responsibility.

Operations of this nature do not happen in isolation. They are the result of strong governance, sound planning, and consistent on-the-ground ex*****on. Somkhanda’s conservation and wildlife guardianship remain in a healthy and resilient state — supported by professional reserve management through PAMCo, priority species monitoring and technical expertise from Wildlife ACT, and the unwavering operational support of conservation partners such as The Bateleurs, often referred to as the conservation airforce.

Somkhanda continues to be managed as a functioning, forward-looking conservation landscape, where biodiversity protection, community leadership, and long-term sustainability are actively strengthened — not reactively defended.

While out on patrol, we encountered this elephant bull moving separate from the main herd.

He made his presence known with a brief warning charge — a clear reminder that space and respect are non-negotiable in the bush. He didn’t follow through, but kept a watchful eye on us until we had moved well clear of the area.

Encounters like this are a reminder of the awareness, discipline, and calm decision-making required during routine patrols — and the privilege of working in landscapes still shaped by wild animals.
