Sometimes, it’s the little things that make a BIG difference.

This afternoon, a mom and her child were travelling back from Cape Town to CHOC East London. The mom has poor eyesight and struggles to find her Uber driver at the airport. To make matters even more stressful, her cellphone had broken that morning. She was understandably very worried that she and her child would be stranded at East London Airport.

But then Richard came to the rescue!

Richard met the family when they arrived, walked with the mom to the Uber pick-up point and made absolutely sure that she was safely in the correct vehicle before leaving.

It may seem like a small gesture, but to this mom, it meant peace of mind, safety and knowing that someone cared enough to help.

This is what being a Journey Angel is all about — going the extra mile, offering a helping hand and making a difficult journey just a little easier.

Thank you, Richard, for always being willing to help. You are a true hero!

This afternoon, Elona and her mom are making the journey to Cape Town for a very important next step in her treatment — her stem cell transplant.

They will be away from home and their loved ones for quite some time, but thankfully, they won’t be alone. The wonderful team at CHOC Plumstead will welcome them with open arms and help make their temporary home away from home a little more comfortable.

Every journey like this carries hope, courage and many emotions. We are honoured to help Elona and her mom get one step closer to the treatment she so desperately needs.

It’s not often that Dad gets to travel along to hospital, but yesterday was one of those special days!

Grayden and his dad travelled to Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town for his annual check-up.

For children living with chronic conditions, these annual reviews with the expert medical team are so important. They allow doctors to monitor their progress, make sure treatment plans remain appropriate, and give each child the best possible chance to live a happy, healthy life — despite the challenges they face.

Today, we are once again reminded that the journey to medical care is just as important as the care itself. Every kilometre travelled brings Grayden closer to the specialists who help him live his best quality of life.

Twenty years ago, a vision was born: that no child should ever miss out on life-saving medical care simply because of where they live.

It started with a simple act of kindness — raising enough money to help one child travel from Gqeberha to Cape Town to receive the specialist medical care they desperately needed. Today, that vision is still alive. Still growing. Still making a difference.

This morning, we funded trip number 28,000!

Behind that number are thousands of children and families who have travelled long roads in search of answers, treatment and hope. There have been moments of fear and uncertainty, but also moments of joy, healing and new beginnings.

For many families, Wings & Wishes has been a light in what can feel like a very dark tunnel — taking away the burden of travel costs and making sure that distance never becomes a barrier to care.

20 years later, we are still going strong.
Still travelling. Still supporting. Still giving hope. Still believing that every child deserves a chance.

Here’s to the next 28,000 journeys… because the journey continues.

Today is a very happy day for Ayakha and her mom – they are going home!

Their journey began on 17 August, when they travelled to Red Cross Hospital in Cape Town for Ayakha’s much-needed cardiac surgery. After a few unexpected delays, surgery finally took place on 1 September – and what a success it was!

After spending a few days in ICU, followed by time in the normal ward, Ayakha has made wonderful progress. Today, she and her mom can finally pack their bags and head home.

There is nothing quite like the joy of going home after a long hospital stay – back to family, familiar surroundings, and the comfort of your own bed.

We are so grateful to everyone who helped make Ayakha’s journey to life-saving medical care possible. Every trip matters, and every journey carries a little more hope in motion.

Welcome home, Ayakha! May this be the beginning of a beautiful new chapter.

The majority of the children who travel with Wings & Wishes from the Eastern Cape are referred by Frere Hospital in East London. Yesterday was no exception.

Little Iyazi travelled with us for the 45th time as she continues her brave fight against bilateral Wilms’ tumour. Her journey is a reminder of the long road many of our families walk—and why reliable access to medical care is so important.

We also welcomed Zacheriah, who travelled with us for the first time to Red Cross Hospital for a procedure to treat his heart condition. We are honoured to be part of his journey and hope this is the beginning of many successful trips towards better health.

At Wings & Wishes, we believe that transport should never be a barrier to lifesaving medical care. It truly takes a village to make these journeys possible.

Last night, there was a very special send-off at the airport.

Zubeyer is bravely battling Aplastic Anemia, and his older brother, Muhammed, has been found to be a perfect donor match for a stem cell transplant. Together with their parents, the boys travelled to Cape Town for this life-changing procedure.

It was truly heartwarming to witness the love and support from family and friends who gathered to wish them well and send them off with hope and encouragement. Moments like these remind us of the incredible strength that comes from family, community, and standing together during difficult journeys.

We are keeping Zubeyer, Muhammed, and their parents in our thoughts and wish them strength, courage, and a successful transplant and recovery.

The journey we walk alongside children with serious illnesses is much like a marathon — long, steady and filled with moments that require support, encouragement and hope. Along the way, we strive to relieve the worry and financial stress that comes with having to travel far from home for medical treatment.

Hlelokuhle was just 6 months old when he first started travelling with Wings & Wishes in 2019. He is living with retinoblastoma, and over the years, we have had the privilege of walking this journey alongside him and his family.

Since 2019, Wings & Wishes has funded an incredible 224 trips for Hlelokuhle and his family to travel to Groote Schuur Hospital for the treatment and care he needs.

Today, it is Granny’s turn to accompany this brave young man on his journey to treatment.

We wish them safe travels and, as always, we are so grateful to our incredible partners Intercape and Port Rex Lions for helping make this journey possible.

At Wings & Wishes, we firmly believe that it takes a village to care for a child. And sometimes, that village extends far beyond our own organisation.

Collaboration with other organisations and community partners is so important to us, because together we can make a much bigger difference in the lives of children and their families.

Today, we were honoured to assist Guardians of Hope in ensuring that this little sweetheart could travel to Red Cross Children’s Hospital to access the expert medical care she needs.

August was a month filled with hope, milestones and new beginnings.

We celebrated with families travelling home after lengthy hospital stays — and three very special children who were able to return home and start a new chapter after successful stem cell transplants.

We also welcomed 15 new families into the Wings & Wishes family. From that moment, they no longer have to carry the added stress and financial burden of worrying about how they will get their child to essential medical care.

For us, every journey is about more than a bus ticket or a flight. It’s about removing one more barrier between a child and the treatment they need.

Thank you to our incredible donors, sponsors, travel partners, volunteers and medical teams who continue to make these journeys possible.

Together, we are ensuring that where a child lives never determines whether they can access the medical care they need.
