The organisation that is known for being radical and militant, and which is loved by young people, is currently at a stage of collapse because of a leadership that has a conflict of interest. They want to represent the organisation while, at the same time, protecting and representing their own friends and interests.
At the beginning, the branch that was democratically elected was disbanded without any tangible explanation or information. Days later, the National Coordinator sent a letter appointing an interim structure. This structure was a complete failure. Power was given to people who are not students, while others came from different organisations. Some were not active at all, and they resigned one by one until we were left with only one Coordinator.
In the midst of trying to fix the organisation 6 days before SRC election , in the early hours of today, the province raised its ugly head once again. Lubha, an individual who calls himself an activist, came forward with recommendations to fill the vacant positions. These recommendations include people who have only been in the organisation for five months, individuals who come from opposition parties, At North Campus it’s worse, names of people whom we do not know at all have been recommended.
What is even more concerning is that none of these recommendations were made through consultation with the branch none whatsoever. They are simply using a commandist approach to impose leadership on the branch.
Mandela, we refuse to be led by Liyema Ndaleni and his boyfriend, Luba. We demand a democratic process. We suggest that a branch be launched democratically, where comrades can go to a venue and elect their own leadership.
We are not going to be led by people who have never been tested, people we do not know, and people whose politics and commitment to the organisation remain unknown to us.
The organisation belongs to its members, and its leadership must emerge from a democratic processnot through imposition, favouritism, friendships or provincial interference.
