The 2nd edition of the Bayethe Addo Explore Fun Run and Heritage Day Celebration took place in Addo yesterday, bringing the community together for a day filled with fun, fitness, culture and celebration.

The successful event provided a positive and active way for residents and visitors to celebrate Heritage Day, while promoting community participation, healthy living and appreciation of our rich local heritage.

The Speaker of Sarah Baartman District Municipality, Cllr Nomhle Gaga, hosted a Voter Education and Heritage Month event yesterday in Alicedale, Makana Local Municipality, bringing community members together for an informative and engaging programme.

The event provided important information on voter education and active participation in our democracy, while also celebrating the significance of Heritage Month and our shared cultural heritage.

The programme further included disaster awareness and preparedness information from the District Municipality’s Disaster Management Unit, as well as valuable information on water and sanitation services from the Water Services Manager.

SBDM remains committed to taking information and services closer to communities and empowering residents to be informed, prepared and active participants in their communities.

The Sarah Baartman District Municipality (SBDM) has concluded its two-day Heritage Month outreach programme in Die Kruis, Eersterivier, Koukamma Local Municipality, with the second day focused on responding to issues raised by the community during yesterday's engagement.

The outreach forms part of SBDM's commitment to bringing government closer to communities, particularly smaller and remote settlements, and ensuring that residents have an opportunity to raise their concerns and access services.

Following yesterday's community dialogue, today's programme combined a community engagement and Services on Wheels, bringing a range of government departments and stakeholders directly to residents.

Among the services and information provided were:

Department of Health – The mobile clinic provided primary healthcare services to community members.

Department of Home Affairs – Residents were assisted with ID applications and other Home Affairs services. The department also encouraged parents to register children within 30 days of birth.

GCIS – Community members were encouraged to verify information before sharing it, particularly as the country approaches the 2026 Local Government Elections, when misinformation and disinformation can spread quickly.

NYDA – Young people were informed about the services available to youth up to the age of 35, including business management training and funding opportunities of up to R200 000 for qualifying businesses.

SAPS – Residents received information on community safety and crime prevention, as well as local SAPS contact details so that they can engage directly with their local police when assistance is required.

Department of Agriculture – The community was encouraged to explore agricultural opportunities, including farming cooperatives and backyard gardens. The department also explained the various forms of assistance available to communities and individuals involved in agricultural initiatives, including small-scale and backyard farming.

The Executive Mayor of SBDM, Cllr Deon de Vos, also addressed the community, highlighting the importance of continued collective action against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) and emphasising that fighting GBV remains everyone's responsibility.

During his welcoming address, Koukamma Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr Vuso, acknowledged the concerns raised by the community and committed the municipality to working towards addressing these issues, including concerns relating to land ownership, as the land on which the community is situated belongs to the Moravian Church.

The programme was directed by Cllr Majola, who also assisted by translating into Afrikaans where necessary to ensure that residents could fully participate and understand the discussions.

In his vote of thanks, Ward Councillor Cllr Witbooi thanked community members for their active participation and engagement throughout the two-day programme.

The outreach provided an important platform for government and community to engage directly, with the second day demonstrating the importance of moving beyond dialogue towards connecting residents with services and institutions that can assist them.

The outreach also included the handover of educational mats to the local primary school.

SBDM thanks the residents of Die Kruis and Eersterivier for their participation and engagement, as well as all the departments, councillors and stakeholders who contributed to making the two-day outreach a success.
