The Eastern Cape Provincial Launch of the Milestones of Freedom Campaign which is led by GCIS, concluded today (12 August 2026), with the delivery of various government services on wheels to residents of Hankey in the Kouga Municipality, under the Sarah Baartman District Municipality.

The Services on Wheels programme was officially opened by the Sarah Baartman District Executive Mayor, Cllr Deon De Vos, who delivered the keynote address before conducting a walkabout and visiting the various service stalls where government departments were assisting community members.

A range of government services were made available to the community, including those from the Department of Transport, Department of Social Development, Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Department of Employment and Labour, SASSA, Department of Home Affairs and Department of Health.

The provincial launch commenced yesterday, 11 August 2026, under the leadership of MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Hon. Nonkqubela Pieters, together with Sarah Baartman District Municipality Speaker, Cllr Nomhle Gaga, Kouga Municipality Councillors and Khoisan Leadership.

The first day of the programme began with a sacred ceremony led by Khoisan Leaders, which included a wreath-laying ceremony at the grave of the late Mama Sarah Baartman.

The programme then proceeded with an intergenerational women’s entrepreneurship breakfast, bringing together women already involved in business as well as those aspiring to become entrepreneurs.

SBDM Welcomes Chinese Fertilizer Investment Delegation

Yesterday SBDM welcomed a delegation from the China Belt and Road General Chamber of Commerce, together with Chinese fertilizer investors and technical experts.

The delegation visited Ikamva Lethu Farms in Addo, SRVM, where discussions focused on innovative organic fertilizer technologies with potential to improve soil fertility, nutrient uptake and crop resilience.

Over the next two days, the delegation will assess potential investment sites and engage with ECDC and other stakeholders on opportunities for local fertilizer manufacturing.

The visit supports SBDM’s efforts to attract investment, strengthen agriculture and promote local economic development.

The Executive Mayor of Sarah Baartman District Municipality, together with Eastern Cape Premier, Hon. Oscar Mabuyane, MEC for Public Works, Infrastructure and EC Department of Human Settlements, Hon. MEC Siphokazi Lusithi, MPL Asanda Tebekana and Koukamma Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr Sam Vuso, today joined residents of Ward 5, Koukammamunicipality, for the handover of 66 houses to destitute households in the area.

A particularly special moment was the handover of a home to Zimkhita Mntambo, a woman living with disabilities. Her new home has been specially fitted with the necessary features to ensure that it is accessible and meets her needs, allowing her to live with greater dignity, safety and independence.

Overcome with gratitude, Zimkhita thanked government for providing her with a home that is suited to her circumstances and gives her a secure place to call home.

The programme then continued to Thornham, where the delegation engaged with community leaders on matters relating to land and title deeds in the area. The engagement provided an opportunity for government to listen directly to community concerns and discuss possible interventions.

The delegation also conducted an oversight visit along the R62, which was severely affected by the heavy rains experienced across the district during May and June. The contractor is currently on site and repair work is underway to restore the damaged road and improve safety for motorists and communities who rely on this important route.

The delegation's final stop was Waterval, where farm roads were also badly affected by the recent heavy rains. An assessment was conducted to determine the extent of the damage and identify what additional work and interventions are required.

Today's programme demonstrated the importance of government working together and remaining connected to communities — delivering houses, addressing land and tenure challenges, and responding to the infrastructure damage caused by increasingly severe weather events.

For Sarah Baartman District Municipality, these engagements are an important part of ensuring that the needs of our rural communities remain at the centre of government planning and service delivery.
