SAMRC National Health Research Enterprise Doctoral Programme

The National Health Research Enterprise (NHRE) Programme is an initiative of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) to fill a gap left by the substantial reduction in international funding available to the South African health research ecosystem. The NHRE is supported by funding from the SAMRC, National Treasury, through the National Department of Health, Gates Foundation and Wellcome Trust. It is founded on a shared commitment to retaining the research infrastructure and high-calibre cadre of clinicians and scientists who have led pioneering research and innovation that has been impactful, not just for South Africa, but for the whole world. Maintaining this world class infrastructure and capacity relies on continuing to develop the next generation of health researchers through multidisciplinary, innovative doctoral training. The NHRE Doctoral Programme is a new initiative that aims to strengthen health research capacity in South Africa by supporting outstanding doctoral candidates undertaking innovative research that addresses priority health challenges.

The purpose of this Request for Applications (RFA) is to build a pipeline of highly skilled PhD graduates in the health sciences who will drive health research and innovation in South Africa and contribute to global health impact.

Applications that also include cross-cutting technologies such as digital health, artificial intelligence, and genomics are encouraged.

Opening date: 28 July 2026
Closing date: 22 September 2026 (Closes at 23:59)

SAMRC Postgraduate Research Associate Programme - PhD Scholarships for Clinical/Health Research

The Postgraduate Research Associate Programme is designed to equip candidates with postgraduate research experience through studying towards a PhD. Through collaborative research projects and dedicated mentorship from experienced SAMRC researchers, research associates gain advanced skills, practical experience and professional readiness for appointment to research positions. The programme also provides an opportunity to train researchers:
- in emerging/strategic research areas or fields where researchers from designated groups are underrepresented, and
- in disciplines that are not included in postgraduate training programmes in tertiary institutions.

Research trainees are supervised/co-supervised by SAMRC Senior Scientists or Professors employed within the SAMRC Research Units, Research Centres and Platforms.

Therefore, preference will be given to candidates of the designated groups, registered for a doctoral degree or master's in scarce skills and strategic and/or emerging fields within the health and clinical research where these groups are underrepresented, such as, but not limited to, Biostatistics, Demography, Data Science, Genomics, Epidemiology, Implementation, and Translational Science.

The purpose of this Request for Applications (RFA) is to attract PhD and Master's candidates within the following research fields, which will be given preference: Behavioural Sciences, Biostatistics, Bioethics, Bioinformatics, Data Science, Digital Health, Demography, Epidemiology, Environmental Public Health, Evolutionary Virology, Implementation and Translational Science, Health Economics, Genomics, Immunology, and Structural Biology.

Opening date: 22 July 2026
Closing date: 22 September 2026 (Closes at 23:59)
