The DA is very pleased that the call by South Africans and the Party for NERSA to reject the proposed exorbitant electricity tariff increase has been heard. The announced tariff increase of 9.61%, while still high, is a long way off the 20.5% requested by Eskom.

How many farm murders will be enough for government to take action?
by Annette Steyn MP - DA Shadow Minister of Agriculture, Forestry & Fisheries

Date: 21 August 2017
Release: Immediate
Type: Press Statement

The recent wave of farm murders across the country must see swift and effective action from the ANC government.

Yet our government has continuously failed to put into action already set up plans for rural safety that will mean that farm workers and farmers no longer have to be subjected to torture, murder or the fear of falling victim to brutal attacks.

The DA wishes to convey its condolences to the families of those who have been killed in these attacks.

The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Mr Francois Beukman, has the power to make the Minister of Police, Fikile Mbalula, explain the continued failure to protect farming communities.

The DA will therefore write to request that Mr. Beukman summon Minister Mbalula to urgently explain and to commit to keeping South Africans safe by implementing the rural safety plans.

We will also conduct oversight visits to measure the extent to which police stations are equipped to deal with violence in rural communities.

The government needs to prioritise the safety of farming communities as workers and farmers have a right to be protected from violent attacks.

Our citizens in rural communities should not live in fear while their leaders turn a blind eye to farm attacks.

Give us a chance to show you the kind of SA we can build together
by Mmusi Maimane MP - Leader of the Democratic Alliance
Date: 21 May 2017
Release: Immediate
Type: Speech
Note to Editors: The following remarks were delivered by the DA Leader during a public meeting in Qwa-Qwa, Free State. The Leader is on a two-day visit to the the Free State as part of the National Tour. The Leader is joined by DA Free State Provincial Leader, Patricia Kopane.
My fellow South Africans
If you don’t like something, then change it.
If you don’t like the path our country is on, then switch to a different path.
If you don’t like what your government is doing for you, then change governments.
I know I don’t like what’s happening to our country. I don’t like to see millions of young people without work. I don’t like to see millions of families trying to get by on a single social grant.
I don’t like to see pit toilets 23 years into our democracy. I don’t like to see dangerous illegal electricity connections. I don’t like to see communities go without water, or sewage leaking into streets.
I don’t like to see corruption, whether this is the president selling the country to the Guptas, or whether it is the local ANC councillor making sure only ANC members get Public Works jobs or are moved up the housing list.
I don’t like any of these things, which is why the DA is working hard to change them.
We are building a South Africa where the people have a real say in their future. We are building a South Africa where everyone has the opportunity to live a life they value.
But this isn’t something we can do on our own. By taking this message across the country to communities like yours, we hope to convince enough people that change is possible. That you don’t have to be satisfied with the way things are.
Because this change can only come from you. Only when you decide that enough is enough can we replace this ANC government with a government that will move us forward.
I don’t need to tell you that life can be better. You know this.
You know that sending your children to school hungry, or going to bed hungry, is not the life you were promised.
You know that pit toilets and sewage running down your streets is not the life you were promised.
You know that having to give up on your dreams because you can’t find work is not the life you were promised.
You know that there must be a much better option. I’m here to tell you that the only way you will achieve the things you want is if you are prepared to make the change.
In last year’s municipal elections, enough people decided to make this change for us to be able to put together coalition governments and cooperation agreements in three new metros.
That means three of our biggest cities decided that they’d had enough of the ANC’s empty promises, and they were prepared to give the DA and our coalition partners a chance. And already these new governments are making a difference in their lives.
If we can do that in Johannesburg and Tshwane and Nelson Mandela Bay, then we can do it here in Qwa-Qwa too.
But we can’t do it if you still believe that the ANC can change. We can’t do it if you’re still waiting for the ANC to get better – to kick out Jacob Zuma – and to put someone else in his place.
Because this will make no difference to a party for which corruption is the only way to operate. Changing leaders at the top will only give corruption a new face and a new name. The only way to get rid of corruption and put the people first is through a new government.
All I am asking is that you give us one chance. Don’t give away your vote for life. Just lend it to us so we can show you that we can bring change to Qwa-Qwa.
If we then disappoint you, take your vote back. But first give us that chance to show you the kind of South Africa we can build together.
Ke a leboga. I thank you.

DA to join march against women abuse tomorrow
by Democratic Alliance -

Date: 19 May 2017
Release: Immediate
Type: Media Advisory

Tomorrow, 20 May 2017, the DA Shadow Minister of Police, Zakhele Mbhele MP, the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba, and DA Shadow Minister of Justice, Glynnis Breytenbach MP, will join the March against women abuse in Tshwane.

While this scourge has gained heightened attention lately, the tragic reality is that this is not a new occurrence.

The DA has already written to the National Assembly Speaker, Baleka Mbete, calling for a debate of national importance on violence against women. It is clear that there has been a failure to make South Africa safe for all, and women in particular, by not tackling issues of gender violence and patriarchy. This needs to be meaningfully debated and for effective solutions to be sought and implemented.

As a country, we need to rise in defence of women and say that enough is enough. The DA encourages south Africans and specifically men, to join the march in solidarity.

The march will take place as follows:

Time: 10:00 - 12:00

Date: Saturday, 20 May 2017

Venue: Pretoria, Church Square to the Union Buildings

Davies Misleading With 'Alternative Facts’ on Liquor Bill Economic Assessment
by Dean Macpherson MP - DA Shadow Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry

Date: 17 February 2017
Release: Immediate
Type: Press Statement

The DA notes the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) bizarre statement today about their failure to complete the socio-economic assessment study on the Draft Liquor Amendment Bill.

The DTI are muddying the waters by conflating policy and legislation. If a study had been done on the policy, the fact remains that a full and extensive impact assessment must be conducted on the Bill, before it is submitted to Cabinet for ratification.

There is a big difference between policy and legislation but appears Davies and his team do not get the distinction.

Last week, the DA received confirmation that this vital study has not been completed on the Bill, and that this study will only be conducted after public comments have been incorporated, which seems illogical.

This is putting the cart before the horse, we need to know how the Bill’s proposals will impact jobs before it is introduced as the study could inform further changes.

It is incredibly irresponsible for Minister Davies to have introduced this Bill without a proper socio-economic assessment study being done and appears that some within Government are leading him by the nose.

It is even more irresponsible for the Minster to manufacture ‘alternative facts’ about the lack of credible evidence, including an economic impact assessment to back up his Bill.

The public has a right to know what this Bill will cost our economy and the impact it will have on job creation and sustainability, especially considering the proposals to not grant liquor licenses within 500 metres of schools, places of worship, recreation facilities, rehabilitation or treatment centres, residential areas and public institutions.

The DA will continue to push for the impact assessment report to be conducted and released to the public so that those who could be affected have the information they deserve.

DA welcomes ICASA’s prime time news ruling on eTV
by Phumzile Van Damme MP - DA Shadow Minister of Communications

Date: 16 February 2017
Release: Immediate
Type: Press Statement

The DA welcomes the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa’s (ICASA) ruling that eTV will not be allowed to amend its licensing conditions to remove their news broadcast from the prime time slot.

ICASA’s decision yesterday is a significant milestone in ensuring that the 12 million South Africans who rely on prime time news broadcasts as a source of information, will continue to have access to news broadcasts at a reasonable time.

eTV has an obligation to the 79% of urban adults who tune into free-to-air newscasters as a source of information and to ensure that programming is in the interests of the citizens of our country.

The DA hopes that this decision will also urge the SABC, who along with eTV made a presentation to ICASA on the 25th of October 2016, to reconsider its ambitions to also amend their license agreement.

The DA will continue our fight for every citizen’s right to information, as enshrined in the constitution, and to ensure that all actions by broadcasters are in the public interest.

Why is SADTU afraid of accountability?
by Gavin Davis MP - DA Shadow Minister of Basic Education

Date: 16 February 2017
Release: Immediate
Type: Press Statement

DA Leader Mmusi Maimane's announcement last week that the DA will introduce a national education inspectorate has SADTU bosses running scared.

The SADTU General Secretary's hysterical response to the idea of a national inspectorate is to be expected from a union whose greatest fear is being held to account for the destruction it has wrought in our education system.

The fact is that SADTU bosses have been allowed to operate with impunity for too long. The ANC government has allowed the SADTU leadership to capture our education system for its own nefarious purposes.

The Ministerial Task Team on the 'Jobs for Cash' scandal found that SADTU is at the apex of a national network of bribery and corruption involving the buying and selling of educator posts. It found that SADTU does this by deploying its cadres into provincial governments and that SADTU is in de facto control of 6 of the 9 provincial education departments.

SADTU's dominance is a key reason why our education system is failing in poor, mainly rural provinces. Weak educators are shielded from being held to account for failing our children, and teachers are actively encouraged to stay away from schools as we saw in Limpopo a few weeks ago.

This is why SADTU is afraid of a national education inspectorate. It is scared that this inspectorate will fully reveal the extent of SADTU's culpability in our failing education system. It is afraid that the balance of power will shift away from corrupt union bosses and towards the children of our country.

It is time to restore balance in our education system by holding those who fail our children to account. We must celebrate the thousands of capable and dedicated teachers both inside and outside of SADTU. But we must make sure, at all times, that the children of our country receive the educational opportunities guaranteed in our Constitution.
