SASCO ENYENYEZI CAMPUS STATEMENT ON THE FIRST SRC MASS MEETING
Today marked a historic and progressive moment at Enyenyezi Campus as the newly elected SRC convened its first mass meeting a powerful demonstration of student democracy in action.
The meeting was successfully chaired by SRC Chairperson Luvuyo Thuli, who led with clarity, discipline, and a deep sense of responsibility to the student body.
The program commenced with SRC Secretary Phuthuma Ntola, who formally introduced the newly elected SRC to the students and proceeded to acknowledge leaders of various political formations on campus recognizing their role in campus governance and the broader struggle for student liberation.
The Chairperson then took the house through the role of the SRC within institutions of higher learning, emphasizing:
That the SRC serves as the official voice of students, representing their academic, social, and welfare interests before management. That the SRC is mandated to protect student rights and ensure accountability, while also driving programs that enhance student life and success
Following this, portfolio heads presented detailed reports on progress made and challenges identified
ACADEMICS & TRANSFORMATION (Fundile Mathumbu)
Announced that NATED R191 Engineering students have begun final exams, encouraging discipline and commitment
Confirmed that PM/BM trial exams begin next week, urging students to attend extra classes and form study groups.
Placed emphasis on critical subjects: Sales BM N5, Municipal Admin N5, Public Admin N4, Announced that applications for next semester will not open, as N4 is being phased out in preparation for QCTO programmes. Raised serious concern over poor attendance among engineering students and committed to advocating for a strong attendance tracking system
Urged engineering students to wear PPE during practical assessments
Updated students on the QCTO funding crisis, confirming that a meeting has been requested for clear answers on SETA processes
Proposed improved signage at the exams office to guide students on required documents (diplomas, statements, certificates)
Called for stronger engagement with Student Support Services to assist exit-level students with in-service training and stipends
Proposed inviting stakeholders to campus for career opportunities and placements
Highlighted the need for SRC involvement in timetable planning, especially to address clashes affecting repeating students
FINANCE (Nokthula Bulose)
Announced that NSFAS payments are being processed, with funds expected to reflect from 17 April
Clarified that this early payment applies only to this month from next month, payments will continue on the 25th as per normal schedule
Confirmed that trimester NSFAS applications open on 6 May 2026
Encouraged all students, especially those rewriting, to submit new applications for the next semester
SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT(Bonokuhle Mbhele)
Proudly announced that two students from Enyenyezi Campus will represent the college at national athletics (COSACSA) in Cape Town wishing them strength and success
Outlined ongoing and upcoming extramural activities
Presented a Program of Action overview, including:
21 April (10:00) β Freedom Month celebration
23 April β Major student event featuring a surprise guest artist
Committed to engaging management for improved sports equipment (football, volleyball, netball)
Announced that applications for the Allan Gray Business Competition are open, with R320 000 up for grabs, urging students to apply and seize the opportunity
The meeting then opened to the floor, where students raised pressing issues affecting their daily lives:
Urgent need for a student shelter for those with free periods or timetable clashes.
Establishment of a study centre on campus
Creation of a sick bay for temporarily ill students and to improve conditions for mobile clinic visits, ensuring privacy and dignity. Demand for transparency in cleaning schedules, proposing that rosters be shared with SRC for accountability
Calls for improved accessibility, including redesigning classroom entrances for students with disabilities
Request for additional restrooms catering to students with special needs
The SRC received all submissions with seriousness and commitment, assuring students that these issues will be formally escalated and championed in their next engagement with campus management.
As SASCO, we welcome and support this level of accountability, transparency, and student-centered leadership. This mass meeting was not just a gathering it was a declaration that student voices matter, and that leadership must respond.
