OPM Prozesky Bird Sanctuary

Over 200 bird species occur adjacent to the Mooi River in a 60 hectare sanctuary with viewing shelters. The reserve was established in the 1980's.

The disused sewage ponds of the local municipality attracted prolific birdlife and nature lovers and the municipality wanted to establish a sanctuary where all forms of wildlife would be protected. The reserve is a joint project of Birdlife Wesvaal and the Potchefstroom City Council whose land it is. The reserve is named after the well-known ornithologist, Dr OPM Prozesky of the Transvaal Museum w

ho championed the cause of the reserve. The Prozesky Bird Sanctuary was established to conserve and protect the bio-diversity of the habit. As part of our green heritage, we have a duty towards the environment to preserve and protect it for future generations. At the same time the area should be accessible to all for enjoyment and education. The reserve belongs to the community of Potchefstroom therefore it should be utilized with minimal disturbance. Birding is the main activity and the reserve has been developed and maintained to be accessible to birders on foot. The paths are maintained by the Potchefstroom City Council and lead of different birding spots and hides. Bridges enable the visitor to gain access to all parts of the reserve and the hides are strategically placed to give the best views of birdlife. Species: As the area is a wetland, many types of water birds (and waders in summer) can be observed at close quarters. About 200 species have been observed over the years. Interesting birds almost always seen include African Purple Swamphen, Black Crake, Black-winged Stilt, Goliath Heron and various species of duck. In the reed beds different warblers can be heard, weavers are prolific in summer and in the grassveld waxbills, cisticolas, pipits and chats can be seen. Recently a flock of Openbill Storks have moved into the reserve and Thick-billed Weavers have established themselves in the region. BIRDLIFE WESVAAL
CLUB MEETING
4 JUNE 2026.

Traditionally, during the winter months in Potchefstroom, BirdLife Wesvaal hosts its popular "Soup and Sherry Evening", and Thursday evening was no exception. A total of 42 club members braved the winter cold to enjoy a pleasant and educational evening together.

After club matters and general administration had been attended to, our guest speakers, Corrie Venter and Alet Steyn, took over with their interesting theme: "Guess, Learn and Bird Identification."

Club members' birding knowledge was thoroughly tested! Bird photographs were displayed and the process of species identification was explained step by step by comparing photographs, descriptions and field guides.

It was certainly not an easy task!
* Just think of all the Cisticolas and Larks!
* The colour differences between juvenile and adult birds left many participants scratching their heads.
* When is it a Gabar Goshawk and when is it a Lizard Buzzard?
* Which bee-eater species have yellow feathers on their throats? Who is who?
* And how does one distinguish between the Maccoa Duck and the Southern Pochard? Which one dives deeper underwater and which one floats higher on the surface?

By question number 24, I had already rewritten my answer sheet about four times!

Congratulations to Alet and Corrie on an outstanding presentation. It was a highly educational evening that was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. We sincerely thank them for the time, effort and preparation that went into making the presentation such a success.
After the programme, delicious hot soup and fresh bread rolls were served in the lounge of the Elgro Hotel. The fellowship was enjoyable, the refreshments were excellent and the evening was filled with warm camaraderie.

A sincere thank you to every member who attended the meeting, as well as to everyone who contributed towards the preparation of the soup and the success of the evening.
Your support and involvement make BirdLife Wesvaal a truly special club.

Our next club meeting will take place on 6 August 2026.

KLUBBYEENKOMS.
4 JUNIE 2026.

Tradisioneel hou BirdLife Wesvaal gedurende die wintermaande in Potchefstroom sy gewilde "Sop en Sjerrie-aand", en Donderdagaand was geen uitsondering nie. Altesaam 42 klublede het die winterkoue getrotseer om saam 'n gesellige en leersame aand te geniet.

Nadat klub-aangeleenthede en algemene administrasie afgehandel is, het ons gassprekers, Corrie Venter en Alet Steyn, die leisels oorgeneem met hul interessante tema: "Raai, Leer en Voëlidentifikasie".

Klublede se kennis van voëls is behoorlik getoets! Voëlfoto's is vertoon en die proses van spesie-identifikasie is stap vir stap verduidelik deur foto's, beskrywings en veldgidse met mekaar te vergelyk.

Dit was beslis nie 'n maklike taak nie!
* D**k maar net aan al die Klopkloppies en Lewerikke!
* Die kleurverskille tussen jong voëls en volwasse voëls het menige deelnemer laat kopkrap.
* Wanneer is dit 'n Witskruissperwer en wanneer 'n Akkedisvalk?
* Watter byvreterspesies het geel vere op hul kele? Wie is wie?
* En hoe onderskei mens tussen die Bloubekeend en die Bruineend? Wie swem dieper in die water en wie swem hoër op die oppervlak?

Teen vraag nommer 24 was my antwoordstel al omtrent vier keer oorgeskryf!

Baie geluk aan Alet en Corrie met 'n uitstekende aanbieding. Dit was 'n besonder leersame aand wat deur almal geniet is. Ons sê opreg dankie vir die tyd, moeite en voorbereiding wat daarin ingegaan het.

Na afloop van die program is heerlike warm sop en vars broodjies in die sitkamer van die Elgro Hotel bedien. Die kuier was gesellig, die verversings smaaklik en die samesyn besonder aangenaam.
Baie dankie aan elke lid wat die aand bygewoon het, asook aan almal wat bygedra het tot die voorbereiding van die sop en die sukses van die byeenkoms.

Julle ondersteuning en betrokkenheid maak BirdLife Wesvaal 'n besonderse klub.

Ons volgende klubbyeenkoms vind plaas op 6 Augustus 2026.

BirdLife Wesvaal sien met groot opgewondenheid uit na die besoek van Dr Hanneline Smit-Robinson, Hoof van Bewaring van BirdLife South Africa, wat die aand se gasspreker gaan wees.

BIRDLIFE WESVAAL

BirdLife Wesvaal nooi u hartlik uit na ons maandelikse Voëlklub-byeenkoms op Donderdag, 4 Junie 2026 om 18:00 by die Elgro Hotel Potchefstroom.

Met die winter in die lug en “sjop en sjerrie-tyd" wat aangebreek het, het ons ’n besonder interessante en opwindende program vir die aand beplan:

“Raai, leer en geniet die wonderwêreld van voëls”

Soos in vorige jare beloof hierdie byeenkoms om ’n aand van pret, leer en heerlike saamkuier te wees.

Vergeet gerus van die winterkoue en kom geniet ’n warm en gesellige aand saam met mede-voëlliefhebbers.

Ons sien daarna uit om u daar te verwelkom!

BirdLife Wesvaal.
Club Meeting.
7 May 2026.

BirdLife Wesvaal’s monthly club meeting took place on 7 May 2026, where club members and friends gathered at the Elgro Hotel in Potchefstroom, despite the cold weather.

The chairperson attended to a few administrative matters and also discussed upcoming outings and activities with the group.

Lounell White, editor of the HoepHoep newsletter, was introduced to the members and warmly thanked for the excellent work she does in compiling the newsletter. The chairperson also expressed appreciation to club members for their photographs, contributions, and stories.

The HoepHoep newsletter is currently distributed to members across the country via WhatsApp and email.
The chairperson further referred to the wide variety of interesting articles and beautiful photographs featured in the HoepHoep. The newsletter is compiled with great care and professionalism by Lounell, something of which BirdLife Wesvaal is extremely proud.

During the tea break, 41 club members enjoyed socialising together while sharing delicious refreshments and warm coffee — something BirdLife Wesvaal members always enjoy and do so well.

We sincerely appreciate the members who continue to keep this wonderful tradition alive through their regular support and contributions.

The guest speaker for the evening was Rudi van der Walt from Potchefstroom.

Rudi took the club on a fascinating journey into the hidden world of lichens — their beauty, ecological importance, and the unique relationships between lichens, fungi, and algae.

He made members aware of something we see almost every day, yet seldom truly notice or appreciate.
Special attention was also given to the interaction between certain lichens and bird species, especially regarding nest building, the use of nesting materials, and how lichens help to waterproof and camouflage nests more effectively.

Rudi, thank you very much for an outstanding presentation and the beautiful photographs you shared with BirdLife Wesvaal.

Our club members will certainly not only continue to watch and photograph birds in future, but will also pay far more attention to lichens, fungi, and algae.

A sincere word of thanks to all the committee members for the excellent arrangements for the meeting. Thank you as well to all club members and friends who attended and contributed to such a warm and enjoyable evening together.

We already look forward to the next meeting!

Die Voëlklub se maandelikse klubbyeenkoms het op 7 Mei 2026 plaasgevind, waar klublede en vriende, ten spyte van die koue weer, by die Elgro Hotel in Potchefstroom saamgekom het.

Die voorsitter het enkele administratiewe sake hanteer en toekomstige uitstappies met die groep bespreek.

Lounell White, redakteur van die HoepHoep-nuusbrief, is aan die lede voorgestel en hartlik bedank vir die uitstekende werk wat sy met die samestelling van die nuusbrief verrig. Die voorsitter het ook waardering uitgespreek teenoor klublede vir hul foto’s, bydraes en stories. Die HoepHoep word tans per WhatsApp en e-pos aan lede regoor die land versprei.

Die voorsitter het verder verwys na die verskeidenheid interessante artikels en pragtige foto’s wat in die HoepHoep verskyn. Die nuusbrief word met groot sorg en kundigheid deur Lounell saamgestel , iets waarop BirdLife Wesvaal besonder trots is.

Tydens die pouse het 41 klublede gesellig saam verkeer en heerlike versnaperings en warm koffie geniet presies soos net BirdLife Wesvaal-lede dit kan doen!

Ons waardeer opreg die klublede wat hierdie tradisie lewend hou en gereeld hul ondersteuning en bydraes lewer.

Die gasspreker van die aand was Rudi van der Walt, hier van Potchefstroom.

Rudi het die klub op ’n besonder interessante reis geneem na die geheime wêreld van ligene , hul skoonheid, ekologiese waarde en die unieke verhoudings tussen ligene, swamme en alge.

Hy het die klublede bewus gemaak van iets wat ons daagliks sien, maar selde werklik raaksien of waardeer.

Daar is ook gefokus op die wisselwerking tussen sekere ligene en voëlspesies, veral met betrekking tot nesbou, die gebruik van boumateriaal, asook hoe ligene help om neste waterdig te maak en beter te kamoefleer.

Rudi, baie dankie vir ’n uitstekende aanbieding en die pragtige foto’s wat jy met BirdLife Wesvaal gedeel het.

Ons klublede sal voortaan beslis nie net voëls kyk en afneem nie, maar ook met groter belangstelling let op ligene, swamme en alge.

’n Opregte woord van dank aan al die bestuurslede vir die uitstekende reëlings van die byeenkoms. Baie dankie ook aan al die klublede en vriende wat teenwoordig was en die aand so gesellig saam geniet het.

Ons sien reeds uit na die volgende byeenkoms!

BIRDLIFE WESVAAL.
KLUBBYEENKOMS.
9 APRIL 2026.

Die Voëlklub se maandelikse byeenkoms, soos deur die jaarprogram geskeduleer, is gewy aan ’n “Show and Tell” geleentheid.

Klublede, van oud tot jonk het entoesiasties deelgeneem, hul pragtige foto’s gewys en stories vertel. Dit was duidelik dat almal ’n passie het vir ons voëllewe, en dit het die aand besonders gemaak.
Die belangstelling het alle verwagtinge oortref!

Elke foto het ’n storie gehad, en elke storie het die gehoor vasgevang. Ongelukkig was die tyd eenvoudig te min gewees om alles in detail te deel. Die bestuurhet hiervan kennis geneem, en daar word reeds beplan aan nóg so ’n geleentheid later vanjaar.

Baie dankie aan elke lid wat deelgeneem en sy/haar foto’s enstories met die klub gedeel het. Dankie ook aan die 61+ klublede en vriende vir julle teenwoordigheid en julle lekker saam kuier.Natuurlik is ons ook die aand bederf met heerlike verversings. Baie dankie daarvoor. Dit was ’n onvergeetlike aand gewees.

Klublede is geïnspireer om gereëld foto’s te neem en hul ervarings en stories neer te skryf om dit later met ander voëlliefhebbers te deel.

BirdLife Wesvaal d**k met waardering terug aan die aanbieders en die aangehegte foto’s bring mooi herinneringe terug.

Rikus van der Merwe, slegs 8 jaar oud en ons jongste deelnemer, het met die ondersteuning van Alet Steyn sy voëlsketse vertoon. Hierdie jongman teken voëls uit veldgidse en doen dit met merkwaardige detail,waardeur hy die unieke eienskappe van elke spesie treffend uitbeeld.

Alet Steyn het foto’s van voëls uit Kenia gewys. Voëlspesies wat op die oog af bekend lyk, maar tog subtiel van ons plaaslike voëls verskil .Ons het het lekker saam getoer.

Whitney van Pletsen het sy foto’s gedeel, saam met kosbare stories uit vervloë jare toe die klub nog baie voëls gering het. Hy het verseker‘n aand of twee nodig om al sy stories klaar te vertel!

Simeon Botha, nog op laerskool, het ons op ’n reis deur Namibië geneem waar hy saam met sy ouers getoer het. Sy pragtige foto’s van gesogte spesies vorm reeds deel van ’n indrukwekkende voëllys van meer as 250 voëls. Dan is hy ook nog ‘n kranige fotograaf.

Marietjie Ferreira het vertel van haar reise en die besondere voëls wat sy met haar kamera vasgevang het. Baie voëlspesies met haarfyn detail en elkeen met sy eie unieke eienskappe is leer ken. Baie ondervinding na baie jare, baie geduld en baie ervarings.

Stefaan Heydenreich is lief vir die Namibië en het met trots sy foto’s gewys. Onder andere het hy ’n foto van die " besondere" Angolasysie gedeel, saam met interessante inligting oor sy soektog na hierdie skaars voëltjie oor jare heen. Sy kundigheid van die natuur en voëllewe kom deur jare se waarneming en ervaring.

Danie Walker, ’n entoesiastiese jongman, het met trots sy foto’s gewys. Sy liefde vir voëls, gekombineer met sy passie vir fotografie,maak sy fotos werklik besonders. Kleurskemas, komposie en balaans speel 'n groot rol in sy fotos.

Elena en Daleen Visser, BirdLife Wesvaal se bekende tweeling, het die gehoor laat skaterlag. Met humor en pragtige foto’s van besondere voëlspesies vertel hulle van hulle soek tog na voëls. Ná dae se soek in die bos, kry hulle soms sommer die voëls op die laaste dag daar langs die pad, oppad huis toe.

Lynn van Heerden en Peet van Schalkwyk is ’n gedugte span wanneer dit by video’s en aksiefoto’s kom. Hul geduld, ervaring en unieke opnames van onder andere ratels, Kaapse kobras en bleeksingvalke in dieKgalagadi Nasionale Park was besonders, indrukwekkend en wel bekend. Hulle fotografie talente en passie vir die natuur is prysenswaardig.

BirdLife Wesvaal se klublede beskik oor soveel talente en dankie vir die deel daarvan. Aan die jonger klublede baie dankie vir julle entoesiasme en puik aanbiedings. BirdLife Wesvaal is werklik bevoorreg om julle as aktiewe klublede te hê.
