Building women's resilience through ensuring paid maternity leave.

Building women's resilience through ensuring paid maternity leave.

This , we are highlighting some important research by Purnima Menon, Ellen Piwoz, and colleagues, who discuss the increasing challenges to breastfeeding in an market-driven world.

"In the workplace, evidence reinforces the importance of fully paid maternity leave in facilitating breastfeeding prevalence and duration, although disparities in access and utilization persist and birth parents in the informal sector have little, if any, protection. Furthermore, to achieve equitable working conditions for breastfeeding mothers, organizational and social changes need to occur. Workplaces could facilitate breastfeeding, especially when part of a broader set of parental support policies and practices."

Over the weekend, the highly anticipated Barbie movie had its premiere, and, echoing the sentiments of Margot Robbie, Women for Women International emphasizes the strength that lies in sisterhood.

For 30 years, we have witnessed the power and impact of our global sisterhood, as we stand together in solidarity with women survivors of war and conflict, as they harness their power to rebuild their lives.

This Women's Month we are celebrating women who have contributed to disaster risk management in different ways!

This week we are highlighting Dr Kylah Forbes-Biggs!

Dr Forbes-Biggs’ passion is in the field of gender and disasters. She is internationally recognised for shedding light on the influence that gender inequality plays in undermining community resilience in Southern Africa and the urgency with which it needs to be addressed. One of her main aims is to help realise the potential of girls and women in communities and to help them recognise their individual and collective agency.

Dr Kylah Forbes-Biggs graduated from the North-West University (NWU) with a PhD in Development and Management (Disaster Studies). After successfully implementing the Girls in Risk Reduction Leadership (GIRRL) model as the basis for a flagship programme at the African Centre for Disaster Studies (ACDS) (NWU) in several Southern African countries, she eventually transitioned to the Gender Responsive Resilience and Intersectionality in Policy and Practice (GRRIPP) Project as the Africa Regional M & E Coordinator.

From the IDRC :

Call for proposals: Closing the justice gap - A Legal Empowerment Research and Learning Agenda

Eligibility
This call for proposals is open to applicants from non-governmental organizations, academia, and private and public-sector organizations with a strong research focus.

We encourage applications from multi-disciplinary consortia of organizations within a country, or across countries, bringing together capacity in terms of community-level or grassroots support, applied research, and national-level advocacy. Given the focus on action research, strong preference will be given to consortia that include organizations engaged in community-based justice work.

Applicants from the United Nations system may not apply to this call as leads or co-applicants. UN organizations may participate as collaborating organizations.

Scope
IDRC seeks proposals for action research projects to generate evidence on innovative legal empowerment approaches and experimentation from the field. Lasting three years, the research projects can be either single country studies led by local organizations or multi-country studies led by local organizations across countries.

Projects should support the generation of knowledge, evidence, and learning on what works, and under what conditions legal empowerment approaches can contribute to achieving systems change, especially for women and vulnerable groups.

The research will contribute to building a comparative evidence base on how legal empowerment approaches draw on the grassroots and community-level experiences of addressing specific violations and the leadership of those who are directly affected. In particular, we will focus on how legal empowerment approaches can help address the root causes of inequality and exclusion and promote public accountability.

Online information sessions will be held for interested applicants.
