Malaysia and South Africa - Strengthening Strategic Partnership, Explore ASEAN & African Market Opportunities, 20 August 2026

Malaysia and South Africa are strengthening their economic, trade and investment ties, with both countries well positioned to serve as strategic gateways to their respective regions.

The “Doing Business with Malaysia: Enhancing Market Access and Cooperation – Malaysia as a Gateway to ASEAN” programme, jointly organised by the High Commission of Malaysia in Pretoria, Republic of South Africa and MATRADE Johannesburg, brought together more than 100 local business leaders and entrepreneurs, alongside key stakeholders from South Africa’s Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) and MIDA Dubai.

With bilateral trade reaching approximately USD1.33 billion in 2025, there is significant room to further diversify and expand business opportunities between Malaysia and South Africa.

Key sectors highlighted include:
🔹 Automotive
🔹 Electrical & Electronics (E&E)
🔹 Palm oil downstream processing
🔹 Mineral processing & technology
🔹 Renewable energy
🔹 Specialised engineering
🔹 Agriculture
🔹 Halal economy

Beyond trade, these sectors offer opportunities for investment, joint ventures, technology transfer, skills development and participation in regional value chains.

Malaysia invites South African businesses to leverage Malaysia as a gateway to ASEAN, while Malaysian companies are encouraged to explore South Africa as a strategic platform to access the wider African market.

The discussions also highlighted the growing potential of the halal economy, including opportunities to participate in MIHAS 2026 and connect with international markets.

Malaysia at 59th ASEAN Day Reception 2026 in Pretoria

A celebration of ASEAN is a celebration of our shared diversity - and Malaysia was proud to bring a taste of our heritage to the occasion!

At the 59th ASEAN Day Reception, hosted by the ASEAN Pretoria Committee (APC) under the Chairship of the Philippines on 19 August 2026 at the National Library of South Africa, High Commission of Malaysia in Pretoria, Republic of South Africa joined fellow ASEAN Member States in showcasing the region’s vibrant cultures, traditions and flavours.

For the cultural attire showcase, Malaysia proudly presented the Baju Pengantin Songket Melayu, highlighting the timeless beauty and craftsmanship of our traditional textile heritage. Songket itself was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021.

And of course, no Malaysian showcase would be complete without food! Perwakilan Pretoria served our famous Nasi Lemak paired with Rendang Daging, together with Bubur Pulut Hitam as dessert - bringing all in for the much-loved Malaysian flavours. Nasi Lemak is also part of Malaysia’s “Breakfast culture”, inscribed by UNESCO in 2024 as Intangible Cultural Heritage, reflecting how food brings Malaysia’s diverse communities together.

From songket to its worldly recognised Nasi Lemak, and tradition to togetherness, Malaysia was delighted to share a little piece of home while celebrating ASEAN’s enduring friendship with South Africa. 🇲🇾🤝🇿🇦
