As Women’s Month draws to a close, the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies, led by Minister Solly Malatsi, marked the occasion in Tzaneen, Limpopo, with a programme that brought together women’s empowerment, GBVF awareness, online safety and digital inclusion.

The engagement formed part of the 365 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, creating space for important conversations on GBVF, the role of technology in addressing gender-based violence and the protection of women and children in the digital environment.

A particularly significant moment was the handover of smart devices by Minister Malatsi to identified beneficiaries, providing practical access to technology and digital opportunities and giving tangible meaning to this year’s Women’s Month message:

“Empowered Women, Empower the Nation.”

The programme then continued in Ward 14, Greater Tzaneen Municipality, where the Minister participated in a Broadcasting Digital Migration activation, supporting vulnerable households through the handover of television sets and BDM kits. Two households of persons with physical disabilities were identified for the intervention.

Today’s programme was strengthened by the contributions of NEMISA, the Film and Publication Board, Sentech, Department of Social Development, the GDYC Directorate, the BDM team and community stakeholders.

As Women’s Month comes to an end, today’s engagements provided a fitting high note, demonstrating that empowerment is most meaningful when it translates into access, opportunity, safety and inclusion.

From empowering women to connecting communities, we continue building a South Africa where everyone can participate in the digital future.

Today in Tzaneen, Limpopo, the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies, led by Minister Solly Malatsi, is taking digital inclusion closer to communities through two important engagements focused on access, safety and empowerment.

The programme brings together GBVF Awareness & Access to Smart Devices and a Broadcasting Digital Migration (BDM) Activation, two interventions that speak directly to the importance of ensuring that technology works for everyone.

Digital access is not simply about having technology. It is about ensuring that people have the tools, information and connectivity they need to participate meaningfully in society and the digital economy.

The Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies and DDM Political Champion for Ngaka Modiri Molema District, Hon. Mondli Gungubele, joined North West Premier Hon. Lazarus Kagiso Mokgosi, Members of the Provincial Executive Council, municipal leadership, government officials and strategic stakeholders for the Joint Accelerated Thuntsha Lerole and District Development Model (DDM) Programme.

The programme brought government closer to communities across Matsatseng, Signal Hill, Top Village, Molelwane, Lonely Park, Setumo Park and surrounding areas, with a strong focus on accelerating service delivery and responding to issues raised by residents.

As part of the programme, Deputy Minister Gungubele participated in oversight engagements focused on:

>The district-funded Water Supply MIG Project serving Wards 28 and 29
>Broadcasting Digital Migration interventions in Wards 28 and 32
>Road infrastructure and pothole patching in Signal Hill/Molelwane
>Direct community engagement and feedback at Lonely Park Multipurpose Centre

For DCDT, the Broadcasting Digital Migration engagement is particularly important in ensuring that communities are not left behind in South Africa’s transition to a digitally connected society.

The day demonstrated the value of the District Development Model, bringing national, provincial and local government together with communities and stakeholders to coordinate interventions, listen to citizens and turn commitments into action.

The DCDT acknowledges the leadership of Premier Mokgosi, the contribution of MECs and municipal leaders, and the dedication of government departments, entities, officials and community stakeholders who made today’s programme possible.

When government works together and listens to communities, service delivery becomes a shared responsibility, and progress becomes possible.

The DCDT, in partnership with the FPB, CyberM8, CSIR and SADICO, hosted an engaging Women’s Cybersecurity Seminar as part of Women’s Month.

The seminar focused on empowering women with the knowledge to navigate the digital world safely, confidently and responsibly.

The discussions highlighted the importance of protecting personal information and staying alert to online threats.
Participants engaged on practical ways to identify scams, cyberbullying and other forms of online harm.
The seminar also encouraged women to become champions of cybersecurity within their communities.

Together, we are advancing a safer, more secure and inclusive digital future for women.
