STATEMENT BY COMRADE SENZO MCHUNU
Date: 07 November 2025

On 13 July 2025, a Commission of Inquiry was announced by His Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa to investigate allegations made by the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant-General Mkhwanazi, on 06 July 2025.
I, immediately thereafter, issued a public statement welcoming the inquiry, accepting being placed on special leave, and making a firm undertaking to co-operate fully with the Commission of Inquiry.

A few days after a number of allegations were made against me, on 09 July 2025, I wrote to the ANC Integrity Commission, requesting to appear before it to state my case. I subsequently made part one of my presentation. We then agreed to continue with part two after the proceedings of the Madlanga Commission. I am co-operating fully with the Integrity Commission, and my comprehensive written submission is at an advanced stage.

On the evening of 13 July 2025, I sent a letter to the Secretary-General of the ANC, informing him of my appearance before the Integrity Commission, as indicated above. In that same letter, I expressed my willingness to take leave from activities of the ANC NEC and NWC.

I was advised by the ANC that my special leave pertains to my Cabinet responsibilities, and that I would continue with organizational tasks within the movement.

As things stand, I am no longer the face of the South African Police Services due to my being on leave. An Acting Minister has been appointed.

I welcome the developments at the Madlanga Commission and the Ad Hoc Committee thus far. I continue to note the details emerging from the statements of various witnesses. In the meantime, I am patiently awaiting my turn to appear, which is expected soon.

In line with my commitment to co-operate with the inquiry, yesterday, 06 November 2025, I handed over all my electronic devices to the South African Police Services. I appreciate the professional manner in which the handover was conducted under a lawfully issued warrant of search and seizure.

I strongly deny the allegations made against me on 06 July 2025. To date, no evidence has been produced to validate such claims so far. I have noted attempts by certain individuals to undermine transparent and legitimate processes that are unfolding publicly and openly for all to observe, while making their own prejudicial conclusions and some even creating “new rules” as we proceed.

Throughout my public service, I have consistently stood against corruption in both public and private sectors. My record in this regard is well known throughout the country. That is what I have done, and continue to do, since assuming responsibility in the South African Police Service portfolio.

While I understand that people are feeling the trauma of crime and corruption in the country, it must be noted, and clearly so, that the fight against crime and corruption in the country is hard and difficult. It requires inner resolve and resilience, let’s pursue it!

I remain committed to truth, transparency, and accountability.

MINISTER OF POLICE, MR SENZO MCHUNU, ACCEPTS AND SUPPORTS THE DECISION OF THE PRESIDENT

STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO ALLEGATIONS REGARDING THE MINISTER’S ALLEGED ASSOCIATION WITH MR MATLALA AND MR MOGOTSI

In response to the recent allegations made by Provincial Commissioner Mkhwanazi, and while respecting the President's call for calm, the Minister of Police, Mr. Senzo Mchunu feels it is important to clarify the following:
The Minister has never met Mr. Matlala, has never spoken to him, nor has the Minister ever requested or received anything from him.

The Minister did however, initiate a review of the SAPS tender awarded to him when suspicions of possible wrongdoing surfaced. It was the same tender which has since been terminated.

Furthermore, whilst the Minister knows and has met Mr. Brown Mogotsi, he is just a comrade and not an associate of the Minister. The Minister has never requested or received anything from him.

MINISTER OF POLICE REJECTS BASELESS ALLEGATIONS BY KZN PROVINCIAL COMMISSIONER

The Minister of Police, Mr Senzo Mchunu, in his capacity as a member of the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress, has been on a campaign trail this weekend in Vryheid, KZN, ahead of the by-elections on the 16th of July 2025.

The Minister has been engaging a number of community groupings, including Izinduna, community organisations and commercial farmers, discussing measures aimed at tackling the rampant crime affecting them, inclusive of stock theft.

Whilst still busy with these engagements, the Minister was made aware of today’s media briefing called by the KwaZulu Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, making a number of wild allegations and claims on a variety of issues.

The Minister of Police will never allow his integrity, that of the Ministry or the SAPS at large to be undermined by insinuations made without evidence or due processes, from anyone, including Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi. We will be reviewing the Provincial Commissioner’s statements and consider appropriate action.

All these statements made by him in public require an urgent, thorough and transparent investigation, on a proper platform.

The Minister of Police remains committed to upholding the rule of law, ensuring accountability within the SAPS, and serving the people of South Africa with integrity. And most importantly, the Minister remains committed to the task at hand, and that is to reduce the high murder rate, reduce high availability of illegal fi****ms, tackle drug trafficking and syndicates and GBV+F throughout the country, with a specific focus on the four provinces with high levels of crime, namely: KZN, Gauteng, the Eastern Cape and Western Cape.

Last engagement of the day: Meeting with commercial farmers in Vryheid, KZN. Stock theft is one of the crimes we are decisively dealing with and the retrieval of stolen livestock is a testament of the hard work by the South African Police Service.
