REMINDER: The Science Meets Touch Conference 2026 begins tomorrow, with the below session taking place on 31 May, shared on behalf of the Massage Therapy Association of SA.

🧠 POLYVAGAL TOUCH & MANUAL THERAPY

With Steven Goldstein (Australia)

What if the way you touch could directly influence a client’s sense of safety, regulation, and connection?

In this thought-provoking session, Steven Goldstein explores Polyvagal Theory and its application in manual therapy — helping therapists better understand how the nervous system responds to touch.

You’ll explore:

✨ The three circuits of the autonomic nervous system
✨ Key principles: hierarchy, neuroception & co-regulation
✨ The role of the vagus nerve in health and chronic dysfunction
✨ The Social Engagement System and its relevance in practice
✨ How to apply polyvagal-informed touch safely, ethically, and within scope

Drawing on leading thinkers such as Stephen Porges and Deb Dana, this session bridges neuroscience and hands-on practice — offering practical ways to foster trust, safety, and therapeutic connection.

DID YOU KNOW?

Acupuncture needles are single-use, sterile and significantly thinner than standard medical needles.

This contributes to the generally low level of discomfort reported during treatment when performed by a trained and registered practitioner.

Acupuncture is part of Chinese Medicine, a regulated allied health profession in South Africa that requires approved qualifications and registration with the AHPCSA.

Consultations may include assessing symptoms, medical history and lifestyle factors to guide appropriate care within the practitioner’s scope.

Seeking care from a registered practitioner helps ensure that treatment is provided in accordance with professional and safety standards.

❓ “Is acupuncture painful?”

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body.

Most patients report minimal discomfort, although individual experiences may vary depending on sensitivity and the area being treated.

Acupuncture forms part of Chinese Medicine, a regulated allied health profession in South Africa. Practitioners are trained to assess a patient’s health through a detailed consultation that may include medical history, symptoms and overall wellbeing.

It is commonly used as part of a broader healthcare approach in the management of certain conditions, as well as supporting general health and wellbeing.

Understanding how regulated healthcare practices work can help reduce uncertainty and support informed healthcare decisions.

🟢 Proposed Amendments to AHPCSA Legislation

The Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA) intends to submit amendments to its governing legislation, including:
• The Rules of 1983
• The Regulations of 2001

These proposed amendments aim to modernise the current legislative framework, which is considered outdated and places limitations on practitioners and therapists, particularly in relation to public awareness and financial sustainability. The amendments further seek to support and empower practitioners both clinically and economically, while maintaining the Council’s mandate to protect the public.

📢 Call for Stakeholder Input
Registered practitioners, organisations, and all interested stakeholders are invited to review the proposed amendments and submit written comments or representations.

đź—“ Closing date: 12 June 2026 at 16h00
