🌍 A new chapter for ethical, inclusive, and green governance in South Africa!

We’re excited to share the recent launch of Strengthening Ethics, Integrity, and Green Governance (SEIGG) — a five-year initiative funded by and implemented by Cowater International in partnership with Public Service And Administration, RSA 🇨🇦🤝🇿🇦

✨ So, what does aim to achieve?

🔹 Strengthen accountability, ethics, and transparency across national, provincial, and municipal government 🏛️
🔹 Build the capacity of public institutions and public servants through technical assistance, practical guidance, and training 📚
🔹 Create more transparent procurement processes and safer, more respectful workplaces 🛡️🤝
🔹 Help build stronger institutions and foster greater public trust ❤️🏛️

SEIGG builds on the achievements of the Strengthening Ethics and Integrity Project (SEIP), continuing the work to strengthen ethics and integrity across South Africa’s public service.

The launch marked the beginning of an exciting five-year journey towards stronger institutions, better governance, and a public service that delivers with integrity. 🚀🌱

Canada and South Africa have an important role to play in shaping a more resilient international system.

At the Nucleus Institute Middle Power Alignment Seminar, High Commissioner James Christoff highlighted the opportunity for our countries to strengthen partnerships, advance shared priorities and work together in areas where our interests align.

Our partnership with South Africa is an important part of Canada’s engagement with the continent under our . As our largest trading partner on the continent, we are working to deepen trade and investment ties across a range of sectors, including mining and critical minerals, energy, technology, agriculture, education and innovation, in support of our mutual diversification agendas. Our cooperation also extends to strengthening multilateralism, advancing climate finance and supporting a just energy transition.

Canada is committed to being an active and reliable partner, working with South Africa- bilaterally and within multilateral fora- to address shared challenges, advance our national interests and deliver mutually beneficial, practical results.

In , the project is exploring new ways to strengthen urban climate resilience and address challenges in the River catchment.

One example is the EcoFilter at Victoria Yards, a nature-based solution that supports water filtration, water-quality monitoring while helping irrigate women-led community gardens. Inspired by how natural wetlands work, the system generates data that can help partners understand what works, inform future decisions and explore whether similar approaches could be applied elsewhere.

The EcoFilter is part of a broader effort involving local communities, organisations, researchers and public-sector partners to restore the Upper Jukskei River catchment through nature-based solutions.

Through Canada’s support for , we are proud to contribute to partnerships that connect climate adaptation with locally driven solutions, knowledge and community benefits.

What does climate adaptation look like on the ground in ?

Over the past two years, partners have been exploring that question through locally-led nature-based solutions activities in the Juksei River catchment. Local communities, organisations, researchers, and public-sector partners have been working together to develop nature-based responses to locally identified challenges.

Supported by Global Affairs Canada, the project brings together local and international expertise with knowledge from the communities who live and work in vulnerable areas of the catchment.

The work includes restoring urban ecosystems, building community capacity, and exploring practical approaches to water security and flood resilience. Together, these activities are helping partners implement solutions that work in the local context and build knowledge to inform future climate adaptation efforts.

For Canada, supporting means working alongside South African partners on practical and inclusive approaches to Climate adaptation, gender equality and sustainable development.

What can the Jukskei River teach us about building a more climate resilient ? Its story stretches far beyond the city, connecting communities and ecosystems to a wider water network.

Johannesburg’s catchment is facing growing climate pressures. Alien invasive species and debris are clogging waterways, increasing flood risks and threatening biodiversity, while rising temperatures and urban heat are placing additional pressure on vulnerable communities.

With support from Global Affairs Canada, the SUNCASA project is implemented by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), WRI Africa and local partners to respond to these challenges through gender-responsive and socially inclusive nature-based solutions:

🌿 Removing invasive species and restoring riverbanks
💧 Strengthening water security and reducing flood risks
🌳 Expanding green spaces through tree planting and agroforestry
🌱 Increasing indigenous vegetation and biodiversity
☀️ Supporting communities to design, implement, and manage solutions urban heat impacts

Together, these efforts aim to restore the Jukskei, strengthen urban ecosystems and help communities better manage climate risks, while supporting women and other underrepresented groups to take part in climate action.

Over the next few days, we’ll share what the project has achieved in Johannesburg.
