NHTKL, Al-Imdaad Foundation and Medicare Launch Cataract Partnership with Successful First Surgeries

The partnership between the National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders (NHTKL), the Al-Imdaad Foundation and Medicare has officially commenced, with the first group of patients successfully undergoing cataract surgeries today.

NHTKL Chairperson Kgosi Thabo Seatlholo was on the ground to witness the launch of the programme and to support the patients as they begin their journey towards restored sight.

Given the distance travelled by many of the patients to access specialised eye care, Medicare admitted the first group overnight for monitoring ahead of tomorrow’s post-operative bandage removal.

Tomorrow is expected to mark a deeply significant moment as the patients experience the results of their surgeries and, the possibility of seeing clearly again after years of impaired vision.

The partnership aims to expand access to cataract surgery to thousands of people, from rural and underserved communities across South Africa, bringing essential eye care closer to those who face barriers in accessing specialised healthcare.

Members of the media are invited to witness the removal of the patients’ bandages tomorrow at 10:00, capturing their first reactions as they experience the life-changing impact of restored vision.

Following the successful launch of Phase One of the partnership between the National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders (NHTKL), Al-Imdaad Foundation and Medicare Rustenburg, patients who were assessed last week are set to undergo cataract surgery tomorrow and will be admitted overnight for post-operative assessment and bandage removal.

Among those expected to experience this life-changing moment is Kosi MP Mahlangu, the eldest member of the National House, who will have cataract surgery as part of the programme. Kosi Mahlangu’s participation is affirmation of the House’s confidence in this programme and is also necessitated by the reality that Traditional Leaders themselves, do not have Medical Aid. His reaction to seeing clearly again will underscore the profound difference that access to quality eye care can make, particularly for people living in rural and underserved communities.

Media are invited to witness the deeply personal moment as this group of cataract patients from traditional communities have their post-operative bandages removed and experience restored vision for the first time in years.

The media will also have an opportunity to engage with the beneficiaries and hear first-hand how impaired vision affected their daily lives, and what restored sight now means for their independence, dignity and quality of life.

NTHKL and Al Imdaad Foundation Partnership in Cataract Launch

Today marks the launch of Phase One of the partnership between Medicare Rustenburg, the Al-Imdaad Foundation and the National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders (NHTKL), bringing quality eye care closer to communities that need it most.

The first patients are undergoing comprehensive assessments and pre-operative screening ahead of cataract surgeries scheduled for Tuesday, 8 September 2026. Among those being assessed is Kosi MP Mahlangu, the eldest member of the National House, affirming the House’s belief in the project and its roll-out to vulnerable members of our traditional communities.

Nkgono Segone, a 106-year-old member of the AmaHlubi Traditional Community, who was identified by the National House Social Development Committee accompanied by the Chairperson, when a house visit was conducted with Al Imdaad , is among the patients prioritised in this initial phase. She will receive additional care and attention to ensure that her assessment and treatment are carefully tailored to her age and individual needs.

Kgosi Maotwe, Chairperson of the North West Provincial House, is overseeing the commencement of the programme and welcomed the intervention as a life changer for people who need it most in traditional communities.

Kgosi Thabo Seatlholo; the Chairperson of the National House, welcomed the launch as an important step in implementing the House’s commitment to improving the lives of traditional communities. He highlighted the value of partnerships such as this one, which bring together traditional leadership, the private sector and organisations such as Al-Imdaad to respond directly to the needs identified within communities and within the programme of InvestRural.

Al-Imdaad Foundation IGR and Special Projects Coordinator nationally for Eye Care and Cataract Operations, Mr Abed Karrim, reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to the programme in partnership with Medicare Rustenburg and Bona Sentle Eye-Care Institute headed by Dr Ola Boni. The collaboration will enhance this programme and its beneficiaries with support reaching people who cannot afford private eye care and cataract operations within communities for whom it was intended.

Dr Benett, CEO of Medicare Rustenburg, emphasised that the partnership goes beyond surgery, covering the full patient journey from screening and admission to surgery, post-operative care and follow-up support to help patients regain their independence.

Lead Ophthalmologist Dr Ola Boni spoke of the profound difference cataract surgery can make to patients and their families. She noted that while an operation may take only 30 minutes, for a patient it can mean a return to work, school, independence and dignity. She also acknowledged the support of Medicare and Al-Imdaad Foundation in helping overcome the financial barriers associated with eye surgery and essential medical consumables.

For the NHTKL, the programme demonstrates what is possible when traditional leadership, the private sector and community partners work together. With traditional leaders closely connected to the communities they serve, they understand first-hand the impact that poor vision can have on people’s quality of life.

NATIONAL HOUSE, AL IMDAAD FOUNDATION AND THE CARING WOMEN’s FORUM PARTNER WITH QUEEN MAWEWE'S FOUNDATION ON COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES

The National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders (NHTKL) and its partners, the Al Imdaad Foundation and Caring Women’s Forum have reaffirmed support for Ndlunkulu Mawewe and her efforts to mobilise partners and resources for the benefit of her community through the eMashobeni Royal Palace Foundation.

NHTKL Chairperson, Kgosi Thabo Seatlholo, accompanied by Deputy Chairperson Nkosi Langa Mavuso and National House member Inkosi Msibi, joined the Al-Imdaad Foundation, led by their Head of IGR; Mr A Karrim and the Caring Women’s Forum in implementing a Winter Warmth Outreach Programme at the invitation of Ndlunkulu Mawewe.

The initiative provided blankets, walking sticks, wheelchairs and other essential winter supplies to elderly and vulnerable members of the community. More importantly, it demonstrated the ability of Traditional Leadership to convene stakeholders and mobilise practical interventions that directly address community needs.

For the National House, the partnership reflects community-centred leadership in action. Through the eMashobeni Royal Palace Foundation, Ndlunkulu Mawewe successfully brought together organisations and partners who share a commitment to improving the lives of people in her community.
The participation of the National House was therefore not merely to support a community outreach programme, but to stand alongside Ndlunkulu Mawewe as she exercises her leadership responsibility and forges partnerships that advance the wellbeing of her people.

Representing the Zulu Royal House, Mntwana Nkosinathi Zulu and Mntwana Qaphelani Zulu welcomed the initiative, noting that it was a first of its kind for the Royal House. They commended Ndlunkulu Mawewe for her commitment to championing programmes that respond to the needs of her community and encouraged her to continue this important work.

The joy and gratitude expressed by the elderly beneficiaries served as a powerful reminder that the true impact of Traditional Leadership is measured by the positive difference it makes in the lives of the people it serves.

*BUILDING UNITY THROUGH CULTURE*

The Zulu Royal House also called on the National House to encourage maidens from all cultural backgrounds to participate in the 2026 Reed Dance in September. Such participation would affirm unity within the institution of Traditional Leadership while celebrating the rich cultural diversity that defines South Africa.

The National House welcomes this call as an opportunity to strengthen cultural cohesion and solidarity among Traditional Leaders and communities across the country.

As the African proverb reminds us: “Inkosi, inkosi ngabantu”.

The partnerships established through the Al Imdaad Foundation with the National House intends to take its work with eMashobeni Royal Palace Foundation beyond the Winter Warmth Outreach Programme.

Mr Karrim highlighted the upcoming rollout of a cataract surgery and eye-health initiative aimed at improving access to quality eye care services for people living in traditional communities, explaining that the surgeries will be carried out in both private and public hospitals.

To this end, the eMashobeni Royal Palace Foundation will engage the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Health regarding the proposed launch of Eye Health Month in Zululand in October, in partnership with the Foundation and other relevant stakeholders.

The National House welcomes these developments and remains committed to supporting initiatives in which Traditional Leaders leverage their leadership role to bring together government, civil society organisations, foundations and other partners to address the pressing challenges facing traditional communities.

The National House further commends Ndlunkulu Mawewe for her visionary leadership and for demonstrating the vital role that Traditional Leadership can play in mobilising partnerships, restoring dignity and creating meaningful opportunities for communities.

MINISTER HLABISA DISTANCES COGTA FROM ALLEGED CORONATION OF MR MAURICE VIVIAN KOK AS KING OF THE GRIQUA NATION

The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Mr Velenkosini Hlabisa, has noted with concern reports alleging a planned coronation of Mr Maurice Vivian Kok as the King of the Griqua Nation.

The Ministry wishes to place on record that it distances itself from the alleged coronation and any claims of recognition arising from it.

The alleged coronation is inconsistent with the provisions of the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act, 2019 (Act No. 3 of 2019) (TKLA), which provides the legislative framework for the recognition and regulation of traditional and Khoi-San communities, leaders and leadership structures in South Africa.

In terms of Section 5(1) of the TKLA, a community seeking recognition as a Khoi-San community is required to follow the prescribed statutory process and satisfy the requirements set out in the Act. Applications are considered by the Commission on Khoi-San Matters (CKSM) in accordance with the processes prescribed by the legislation.

According to the records of the Department of Traditional Affairs, no Khoi-San community, Senior Khoi-San Leader or Branch Head has, to date, been formally recommended for recognition through the prescribed statutory process.

In the specific case of Mr Maurice Vivian Kok, the Ministry confirms that the Commission on Khoi-San Matters is still considering his application for recognition as a leader. The process has therefore not been concluded and no recognition has been granted by the Minister or the Department.

It is important to emphasise that the recognition of a Khoi-San leadership structure or leader can only take place following the completion of the prescribed assessment and recognition processes in terms of the TKLA. No individual or group may confer or assume a legally recognised leadership status outside this statutory framework.

The Ministry further draws attention to Section 7(9) of the TKLA, which provides that a person who, without lawful recognition, purports to be a traditional or Khoi-San leader commits an offence and may, upon conviction, be liable to a fine or imprisonment for a period not exceeding three years.

Accordingly, any person who claims the status of King or any other recognised traditional or Khoi-San leadership position without having been lawfully recognised in terms of the Act may be subject to the provisions of Section 7(9).

Minister Hlabisa reiterates that CoGTA remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that the recognition of traditional and Khoi-San leadership is conducted transparently, fairly and strictly in accordance with the applicable legislative framework.

The Ministry therefore cautions against any statements, ceremonies or activities that may create the impression that Mr Maurice Vivian Kok, or any other individual, has been formally recognised as a Khoi-San leader where the statutory process has not yet been concluded.

SATLA Partnership Officially Sealed

Today, Sun City hosted the official signing ceremony sealing the partnership between the organisers of the South African Traditional Leaders’ Awards (SATLA), the National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders, and Sun City, a significant milestone in establishing the SATLA Awards as a national platform celebrating traditional leadership, culture and heritage.

The occasion was honoured by the presence of His Majesty King Vulikhaya Sigcau, alongside National House leadership including Chairperson Kgosi Thabo Seatlholo, Deputy Chairperson Nkosi Langa Mavuso, the Chairperson of the North West Provincial House, Kgosi Maotwe, the Deputy Chairperson of the North West House, Kgosi Mabalane, Kgosi Sedumedi and Inkhosi Kekana.

Brett Hoppe of Sun City reaffirmed Sun City’s commitment to the partnership, announcing a five-year extension that will provide a strong foundation for the SATLA Awards to grow and become firmly embedded in South Africa’s national cultural calendar. He highlighted the importance of preserving cultural heritage and recognising traditional leadership, while noting the significant role authentic cultural experiences play in tourism and community development.

Mrs Rulashe-Nesi, one of the pioneers of the SATLA initiative, reflected on its journey from an idea to a national platform. She emphasised that the awards are about recognising traditional leaders, their communities, ancestors, heritage and the invaluable role traditional leadership continues to play in South Africa.

In his address, Kgosi Thabo Seatlholo reflected on the often-overlooked contribution of traditional leaders to the development and preservation of South Africa’s communities, land, culture and heritage. He stressed that traditional leadership is not a thing of the past, but a living institution with an important role in shaping the country’s future. He called on traditional leaders and provincial structures to take ownership of the SATLA Awards and work collectively to ensure their success.

Delivering the vote of thanks, the Chairperson of the North West Provincial House, expressed appreciation to the partners and traditional leaders who have brought the vision to this point. He highlighted the importance of unity, provincial participation and collective ownership, noting that the success of the awards depends on traditional leadership structures working together to build an initiative worthy of the institution and the communities it serves.

21 November 2026 is the date to remember, when traditional leaders from across South Africa and beyond will gather at Sun City for the South African Traditional Leaders’ Awards.

Today’s signing marks a new chapter in celebrating traditional leadership and its contribution towards our national identity.

It’s a wrap from the 2026 Women’s Parliament!

The 2026 Women’s Parliament concluded with the reading of a Declaration by women gathered at the Great Hall of Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley.

A key highlight for the National House was seeing issues raised during an earlier panel discussion on alcohol-related harms in communities reflected in the final Declaration. These important discussions were further unpacked at the SAAPA Dinner last night, where the House’s contribution was led by Inkosi Sandile. SAAPA-SA used the platform to launch the results of their latest research study undertaken in collaboration with Wits University.

Against the backdrop of the many challenges facing our country, the two-day Women’s Parliament provided an important space for women to come together in unity, share experiences and perspectives, and reaffirm a collective commitment to building safer, stronger and more inclusive communities.

The conversations may have ended, but the call to action continues.
