The Invisible Battlefield: The Devastating Cowardice of Parental Alienation

There is a unique cruelty in masterminding a war, orchestrating every strategic strike, and then stepping back into the shadows, leaving a child to fight the battle entirely on their own.

This is the psychological blueprint of parental alienation.
In high-conflict custody separations, an alienating parent will often weaponise a child's loyalty, programming them to reject a loving, fit mother or father. While the toxic parent pulls the strings, dictates the hatred, and stands defiantly behind legal shields, it is the child who is ultimately forced into full armour, left to face the horrific emotional fallout alone. The child is left to betray themselves and tell all the hired guns a story they never lived.

The Cowardice of Zero Accountability
The defining characteristic of an alienating parent is a complete and absolute refusal to take accountability. They do not see the destruction they cause because, to them, the child’s weaponised anger is viewed as "self-agency." They hide behind the defence that "the child just doesn't want to see you," conveniently erasing the months or years of subtle brainwashing, badmouthing, and psychological manipulation they injected into that child's mind. They ignore every positive moment and repackage it according to their own mental health issues.

Once the child has absorbed the programming, the alienating parent steps back. The child becomes the shield, the warrior, and the voice of the toxic parent's unhinged revenge. The parent has effectively chosen the battle, but forces the child to fight it. They chose the narrative and then plays victim like an Oscar winner.

Insights from Top Experts
To truly understand the depth of this trauma, we can look to the world’s leading experts on the subject, Dr. Craig Childress and Dr. Amy J.L. Baker.

1. The Erasure of Empathy and "Pure Evil"
Dr. Craig Childress, a leading psychologist specializing in attachment-based parental alienation, describes this dynamic not just as bad parenting, but as a severe, deep-rooted psychological pathology. He writes:
"The alienating parent is so angry that they are killing, they are murdering, the other person's children... But not only that, the alienating parent is getting the child to be the murderer of the other person's children... to turn your own child into the murderer of the other person's children... That's such a horrible-horrible thing to do."
Dr. Childress explains that by stripping a child of their natural capacity to love and empathize with their other parent, the alienating parent commits an act of psychological destruction:
"The absence of parental empathy is the origin of inflicting psychological trauma on the child. And inflicting psychological trauma on the child destroys the child's capacity for empathy... For you to kill another person's children because you are angry with them is the worst thing I have ever heard. To get a child to exhibit that level of cruelty is beyond the psychological abuse of the child..."

2. The Survival Contract and Turning Victim into Victimizer
Dr. Amy J.L. Baker, a premier researcher on alienation and creator of the Four-Factor Model, highlights how children are forced into these battles out of pure psychological survival. Trapped in a toxic loyalty bind, they realise that to survive, they must please the aggressor. Dr. Baker notes:
"Identification with the aggressor... occurred when the children took the fear of the alienating parent and turned it into an allegiance with that parent against the targeted parent. In this way the child transformed him or herself from a victim to a victimizer."
When children are forced to sever their connection to a loving parent, they don't do it because they want to; they do it because the psychological price of loving both parents is too high. Dr. Baker explains that the alienating parent conveys a destructive message to the child:
"Pursuing a relationship with that parent jeopardizes your [relationship with the favored parent]... the child clings vehemently to the favored parent, even when that parent's behavior is harmful to them."

Left to Fight Alone
The masterminds, the toxic parent, the enabling family structures (flying monkeys), the aggressive legal representation (hired guns), stand safely in the background, pointing fingers. Meanwhile, the child stands on the front line, burdened with a heavy sword and shield they were never meant to carry.
Alienated children grow up carrying immense, overwhelming anxiety. They are forced to actively repress memories of love, construct false narratives to justify their hostility, and push away a parent who desperately wants to protect them.
They are fighting an exhausting, unnatural war. And the ultimate tragedy? When the dust settles and these children grow into adults, they are the ones left to sift through the wreckage of a stolen childhood and broken familial bonds, while the parent who engineered the entire conflict stands by, completely devoid of shame or accountability.

Parental alienation is not a custody dispute. It is severe emotional child abuse. It’s time to stop letting toxic parents hide behind the children they have forced into battle.

It’s time for courts, therapists, and families to stop enabling this cruelty.

COMMUNITY MEMBERS WARNED ABOUT ONLINE MARKETPLACE SCAMS AND ROBBERIES

The South African Police Service in Tshwane is once again warning community members to exercise extreme caution when purchasing goods advertised on social media platforms, particularly Facebook Marketplace and similar online trading sites.

Police have noted an increase in incidents where unsuspecting buyers are targeted by criminals posing as legitimate sellers. In many cases, attractive advertisements are posted for motor vehicles, cellular phones, furniture, electrical appliances and other high-value items at prices that appear too good to ignore. Once contact has been established, prospective buyers are persuaded to travel to locations where the advertised goods can allegedly be viewed or collected.

Of particular concern are transactions arranged in isolated areas in the northern parts of Tshwane, including areas such as Winterveldt, where criminals have used online advertisements as a means to lure victims. Upon arrival, victims have been robbed of cash, cellphones, vehicles and other valuables. In some instances, buyers have paid deposits for goods that never existed, only to discover later that they had fallen victim to a scam.

The SAPS urges members of the public not to allow the excitement of a bargain to cloud their judgement. Before committing to any purchase, buyers should verify the identity of the seller and insist on meeting in a safe, public environment where there are other people present. Shopping centres, busy public venues and, where possible, police stations provide far safer alternatives than secluded meeting points suggested by strangers.

Community members are further advised never to transfer money or pay deposits before physically inspecting an item and confirming that it is legitimate. Buyers should also avoid attending meetings alone and should ensure that family members or friends are aware of their whereabouts when conducting transactions arranged online.

Criminals are constantly adapting their methods and are becoming increasingly sophisticated in the way they deceive members of the public. The SAPS therefore appeals to residents to remain vigilant, trust their instincts and immediately withdraw from any transaction that appears suspicious or makes them feel unsafe.

Anyone who encounters suspicious online advertisements or becomes a victim of fraud, theft or robbery linked to online marketplaces is encouraged to report the matter to their nearest police station without delay.

The safety of our communities remains a collective responsibility. By remaining cautious and taking the necessary precautions, community members can help protect themselves from becoming victims of online marketplace crime.
