Meet Abongile Nonjoba, managing director of Isiba Organics.

For Abongile Nonjoba, taking Isiba Organics to the Organic and Natural Products Expo Africa was about more than making sales. It was about opening up new possibilities for a business that mainly sells its products online.

With support from the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic), Nonjoba showcased her hair products at the expo in Sandton, where she connected with corporate buyers, retail buyers and distributors.

While the business made sales at the show, the bigger opportunity was building a network of potential clients who could help Isiba Organics grow into new markets.

Nonjoba brings a background in professional beauty therapy, phytomedicine and natural products, as well as food and beverage packaging operations, to the business.

This Women’s Month, we celebrate women who are building businesses, expanding their networks and creating opportunities for growth.

SOUTH AFRICA’S GLOBAL BUSINESS SERVICES SECTOR PRESENTS SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITIES FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH - DEPUTY MINISTER STEENHUISEN

South Africa’s global business services (GBS) sector presents significant opportunities for economic growth, job creation and youth skills development. This is according to the Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Mr John Steenhuisen, who was speaking at the official opening of Atain’s new GBS centre in the Cape Town CBD on Friday, 28 August 2026.

Atain is a global customer experience and business process management company that specialises in AI-driven services and digital technology platforms.

Steenhuisen declared that South Africa’s GBS sector was poised for further growth as Atain expands its South African footprint, and reaffirmed government’s commitment to working with investors to unlock the sector’s full potential.

“I commend the leadership of Atain for their confidence in our country, and continued investment in our youth. Their vision for employment, skills development, and the advancement of young people into the digital economy is outstanding. Atain has grown from a 50-person operation in 2022 and is now a significant employer in Cape Town with a workforce of approximately 1 500 people. That will soon grow to 2 100, supported by an investment of R70 million,” said Steenhuisen.

He further said that Atain’s investment demonstrated strong investor confidence and endorsement of South Africa as a destination of choice for GBS.

“We welcome the investment and commit to unlocking further growth in the GBS sector,” he added.

Furthermore, Steenhuisen said the investment also demonstrated the importance of putting people at the centre of business growth, as Atain provides employees with a range of benefits, including incentive schemes, medical cover, funeral benefits and door-to-door transport, supporting the creation of a motivated and productive workforce.

The company’s investment in skills development is further demonstrated through the Atain Academy, which focuses on impact sourcing and deliberately recruits young people from disadvantaged and high-risk communities. More than 350 learners have already received training through the academy, creating a pipeline of skilled talent while providing young South Africans with pathways into sustainable employment.

Steenhuisen said the GBS sector was significant as artificial intelligence and other technologies transform the global world, and South Africa is well positioned to benefit from this growth, supported by its time-zone advantages, multilingual capabilities, skilled workforce and established GBS ecosystem.

“Cape Town remains the heart of the GBS sector, but there are huge opportunities for greater expansion across the rest of the country, particularly into provinces where there are deep pools of untapped talent that can be leveraged to grow businesses within the sector,” said Steenhuisen.

While underscoring the importance of investment promotion, Steenhuisen said that the Atain investment also demonstrated the impact of sustained investment promotion efforts by the South African High Commission in India and InvestSA, which is part of the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic). He stressed that both played an active role in pursuing and facilitating the investment, supported by investment promotion engagements, business case development and inward investment initiatives.

In addition, Steenhuisen said as the global economy undergoes rapid technological transformation, Atain’s business model, which combines artificial intelligence with human expertise, demonstrates how South African companies can position themselves to deliver globally competitive services.

“We are here to listen and to use our position within government to co-ordinate other relevant departments, to understand the obstacles and barriers, and to work together to move them out of the way so that we can open up a superhighway of growth, development and opportunity,” said Steenhuisen.

He concluded: “Atain is building more than a business centre. You are building futures. You are building the skills that South Africa so fundamentally needs and, most importantly, building opportunities for South Africans, particularly our youth. InvestSA stands ready to support Atain’s next phase of growth and to work with the broader GBS sector to unlock further investment, employment and skills development opportunities across South Africa.”

Atain’s Chief Human Resources Officer, Amir Bharwani said. “South Africa is a strategic hub for Atain and an important part of our global growth story. We have built a strong presence in Cape Town on the strength of exceptional local talent, and we are committed to scaling our investment further. Our focus is to create meaningful careers, build future-ready skills, and deliver exceptional outcomes for our clients globally.”

GAUTENG AWARD WINNING COSMETICS COMPANY SHARES JOURNEY OF ENTREPRENEURIAL PERSEVERANCE THIS WOMEN’S MONTH

What started as a medical challenge for her son suffering from eczema and allergies, and with little to no help from the doctors, a mother and entrepreneur, Ms Koketso Ramatlho founded a cosmetics manufacturing company focusing on organic and plant-based indigenous ingredients for skin for her young son’s medical issues.

The Co-founder and Director of Angela Care based in Centurion, Pretoria, Ramatlho says true to her love and passion for entrepreneurship, the business and cosmetics industry simply chose her, and she answered the call without hesitation.

“My son was suffering from eczema and allergies, with little to no help from the doctors. We were advised to use moringa soaps and body butter on his skin. Within weeks there was great improvement, to a point of being healed,” says Ramatlho.

She decided to start a business to produce skin and haircare products from moringa and other plants in order help others as she became aware that there were many other people who were suffering from skin and hair problems.

“That was what birthed Angela Care, and our main goal is to become a leading African manufacturer and a globally recognised brand of high quality organic and plant-based skin and hair care products, using indigenous ingredients to promote healthy skin and hair, wellness, and sustainable living,” says Ramatlho, who holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the Regent Business School.

She adds that her company’s key objectives are to grow the business locally and internationally, develop innovative products, maintain high quality and safety standards, promote and educate people about Indigenous ingredients, create employment and economic opportunities, promote sustainability and build a strong global brand.

Ramatlho’s company been recognised through numerous awards, including winning the Bambelela Hollywood Foundation Pitch Rounda, and the eKasi Pitch ran by Kaya FM in partnership with Standard Bank.

“Our biggest success was not only winning these awards, but also exporting to other countries has been an achievement for us. Our biggest success story though would have to be that we expanded our offices and built a laboratory. It was the hardest two years of our business and financial life having to put every cent we made into that, but it has been worth it. This will allow us to grow our team and push to get our Good Manufacturing Practice and International Organisation for Standardisation certificates,” she notes.

Ramatlho received funding from the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, (the dtic’s) to showcase her products at the Beauty Istanbul in 2023 and support from Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency, under the SHE TRADES Programme, which took them to Kenya for a conference.

Her messages of inspiration to other women entrepreneurs as the Women’s Month ends: “Believe in yourself and start with what you have. You do not need to have everything figured out before you begin. Your idea, experience, and struggles and even your failures can become the foundation of something meaningful. Entrepreneurship is not always easy. There will be rejections, financial challenges, doubt and moments when you want to give up”.

She also believes that women have the power to create opportunities, not only for themselves, but for their families, communities and other women.

“Start small, be consistent, remain authentic and keep going. Your business may begin as an idea, but with courage, discipline and perseverance, it can become a legacy. This Women’s Month, I want to remind everyone that you are capable more than you can imagine. Never be afraid to dream, to start something new, or to take up space in rooms where women have not always been represented,” stresses Ramatlho.

Meet Kgomotso Moloi, co-founder of MO and K Essence

For Kgomotso Moloi, a passion for candles has grown into a business creating candles, bath salts, diffusers, room mists, care packages and gifting products.

Based in Ekurhuleni, MO and K Essence started in 2020 and recently took its products to the Organic and Natural Products Expo Africa in Sandton, with support from the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic).

The expo opened the door to more than visibility. Moloi engaged with potential clients, made sales and held business-to-business meetings that could lead to supplying products to stores and creating packages for corporate events.

For women building businesses, opportunities to showcase what they have built can be the start of something much bigger.

This Women’s Month, we celebrate women like Moloi who are turning their passion into businesses and creating products ready for new markets.
