🎉 Mid-Service Training with a Twist! 🌍✨

This year, our SA44 cohort wanted to spice things up! They asked for site visits as part of their mid-service training (MST) schedule, and the Programming, Training, and Evaluation team was all in! 🙌

Today kicked off Day 1 of MST on Site. The team split into three groups and hit the road to check out what our Volunteers are up to at schools, organizations, and with their host families. Stay tuned for more updates! 🚀📸

🙋‍♂️Meet Mac Hammett, a dedicated Health Volunteer with the in South Africa. From the start of his service, Mac has wholeheartedly embraced the Sepedi language, which has proven to be an essential asset in his integration into his small village in Limpopo.

In South Africa, language is more than just a tool for communication; it's a marker of cultural identity, heritage, and belonging. Language opens doors and strengthens partnerships that make America safer, stronger, and more prosperous.

Congratulations to our Peace Corps Response Volunteers, GraceAnn and Maria on completing their orientation.

They arrived in the Eastern Cape to warm welcome from their Counterparts and host families. Over the next twelve months, they will be collaborating with local teachers to introduce innovative teaching methods and unique skills that are currently needed. Their efforts will support English learning for young children in their early school years. GraceAnn and Maria will also provide tutoring sessions for small groups, helping to boost learners’ confidence in communicating in English.

We're excited for journey ahead. 🥳🥳

Our new Peace Corps Response Volunteers have officially arrived in South Africa. They will spend the next nine days engaged in orientation, receiving training in several key areas, including Peace Corps' approach to development, basic language skills, cross-cultural integration, health and safety issues, and their work assignments.

We are excited for the journey ahead!

Last week, our SA43 Education Volunteer, Jacob, together with his school counterpart, Petrus, and community counterpart, Kagiso, proudly launched a children's book dedicated to their community.

Toro ya Bokamoso/Bokamoso's Dream is about a boy named Bokamoso (which means “The Future”) who lives in Mpumalanga. He grows up highly disadvantaged and struggling in school until he learns to read and falls in love with it. His love for reading takes him from reading and speech competitions, to writing stories about his community, to a tour of South Africa telling his stories. He eventually comes back home to find the community has built a library in honor of him. He chooses to stay in his village and teach kids to read at the library.

Every family from the school where Petrus and Jacob teach will be receiving a copy of this special book. Congratulation to Petrus, Kagiso and Jacob for the success of their book.

The Education and Health Programming teams recently traveled to the Amajuba and uThukela District municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal. Their purpose was to prepare the sites and build relationships within the local community. This initiative aimed to re-establish partnerships between Peace Corps/South Africa (PCSA) and the communities ahead of the arrival of SA45.

In the effort to build relationships, PCSA invited stakeholders to various meetings. These meeting focused on the history of the Peace Corps within the South African context, discussing the roles, conditions, and hosting capacities for Peace Corps Volunteers.

The teams will continue their site preparations over the next few months to ensure suitable placements for SA45 Volunteers scheduled to arrive in July.
