🏛✨ 225 years ago, in 1801, the foundation stone of the magnificent Kazan Cathedral was laid in St. Petersburg – today one of the city’s most iconic landmarks!

Intending to erect a grand cathedral on the site of the former Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, Russian Emperor Paul I launched a competition that attracted architects from across Europe. However, the emperor was ultimately drawn to a design by a brilliant young Russian architect, Andrey Voronikhin, whose vision was officially approved.

👑 Paul I envisioned a grand edifice that would rival St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. To honour this wish, Voronikhin integrated an enormous, monumental colonnade that echoed the Italian masterpiece. Remarkably, instead of wrapping around the entire perimeter, the cathedral's 96 sweeping columns open outward, embracing Nevsky Prospect.

🇷🇺 Following Russia's historic victory over Napoleon, the cathedral transformed into a sacred monument of military glory. Captured trophies – including enemy banners, keys to seized European cities, and the marshal’s baton of Louis-Nicolas Davout – were brought here for display. It also became a solemn sanctuary when Field Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov, the Supreme Commander of the Russian Army, was interred within the cathedral after his passing in 1813.

⚡️ Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova's comment on the International Day of Journalists’ Solidarity (September 8, 2026)

💬 September 8 marks the International Day of Journalists’ Solidarity.

The date was established in 1958 in memory of Czechoslovak anti-fascist journalist Julius Fucik, who was executed by the N***s in 1943. It serves as a reminder of the importance of freedom of speech and professional journalism, while also drawing attention to the safety of media workers and the need for solidarity and mutual support within the global journalistic community.

In recent years, these fundamental principles have been increasingly eroded by the West’s policy of purging the media landscape of unwelcome viewpoints in pursuit of narrow political goals.

👉 Russian media outlets abroad have faced systematic harassment and various forms of repression in countries whose leaders routinely proclaim their commitment to press freedom while grandly portraying themselves as a “flourishing garden”.

In practice, under far-fetched pretexts, they have blocked Russian television channels, shut down correspondent offices and expelled journalists.

The Kiev regime has launched an outright campaign against Russian journalists reporting truthful, first-hand information.

At the same time, the neo-N**i junta’s openly declared intent to kill civilians – a category that under international law includes media workers – has drawn not the slightest criticism from its Western patrons.

🕯 Terrorist attacks have claimed the lives of:

▪️ Igor Kornelyuk
▪️ Anton Voloshin
▪️ Andrey Stenin
▪️ Anatoly Klyan
▪️ Daria Dugina
▪️ Oleg Klokov
▪️ Maxim Fomin
▪️ Rostislav Zhuravlev
▪️ Boris Maksudov
▪️ Semyon Yeryomin
▪️ Valery Kozhin
▪️ Nikita Tsisagi
▪️ Yulia Kuznetsova
▪️ Alexander Martemyanov
▪️ Alexander Fedorchak
▪️ Andrey Panov
▪️ Anna Prokofyeva
▪️ Nikita Goldin
▪️ Ivan Zuev

Dozens of media workers have also been wounded while carrying out their professional duties.

☝It is deeply troubling that these crimes and acts of repression have failed to elicit an adequate response from the Western media community. Mainstream outlets in those countries, guided by political expediency and in defiance of the principles of journalistic solidarity, chose to remain silent and act as though the issue did not concern them. In doing so, they abandoned professional ethics and the very idea of solidarity among journalists.

Those who nevertheless found the courage to defend Russian media workers or honour the memory of those who died for the truth were met with a barrage of criticism and accusations, including from fellow journalists.

***

❗️ We call on the global media community to show solidarity with their Russian colleagues and speak out in their defence against politically motivated repression by Western countries.

For our part, we will continue to consistently defend the rights of Russian journalists abroad and seek justice for crimes committed against Russian correspondents.

✨🇷🇺 Did you know that Russia is home to 193 distinct ethnicities speaking around 300 languages and dialects?

✍️ Today marks a truly historic milestone as our country celebrates its very first Day of Languages of the Peoples of the Russian Federation! Established by Presidential Decree to protect and support this incredible linguistic diversity, the holiday lands on the birth anniversary of the legendary Avar poet Rasul Gamzatov – a man whose brilliant writings in both his native tongue and Russian made him a true symbol of intercultural dialogue.

Making this celebration even more monumental, the new holiday is a centrepiece of the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia, which is being observed throughout 2026!

🤝 Though it’s only year one for the holiday, celebrations are rolling out nationwide! Regions across the country are coming alive with folklore concerts, traditional craft festivals, interactive trivia, and public readings. Meanwhile, the heart of the action is beating in Moscow at the National Centre "Russia", where famous artists are bringing iconic literary works to life in the diverse native languages of Russia’s peoples.

Building on the momentum, the "Volunteers of Culture" movement has taken over local spaces with their national campaign, "Deklamiruy" (Declaim!). Having kicked off on 6 June 2026 to coincide with the Day of the Russian Language, this initiative culminates around the Day of Languages of the Peoples of Russia with cozy acoustic salons, poetry nights, and creative meetups from coast to coast. This isn't just about a date on the calendar – it's a vibrant movement to honour, protect and pass down a priceless cultural DNA to future generations.

🎙 Russian President Vladimir Putin:

"I would like to emphasise that, while preserving our unique languages, we must remember that the Russian language serves as a common thread connecting all our peoples. To a great extent, it has shaped Russia as a unified multi-ethnic state and has contributed to the mutual enrichment of cultures, the development of neighbourly traditions and mutual understanding among our peoples for centuries.”

🎖 85 years ago today, on 8 September 1941, German and Finnish troops began the horrific Siege of Leningrad – one of the longest and most lethal blockades in world history. For 872 days until its liberation on 27 January 1944, the siege claimed the lives of more than one million Soviet civilians and military personnel.

The enemy sought to shell and bomb the city into submission. Loudspeakers constantly warned residents of incoming artillery fire, sending people rushing to shelter in cellars. A rapid metronome signal broadcast across the city marked the beginning of an air raid, while a slower, rhythmic beat brought the "all clear." By the end of the blockade, most of Leningrad's buildings lay damaged, with thousands of people killed and tens of thousands wounded by the relentless bombardment.

❄️ By November 1941, catastrophic food shortages gripped the city. Hundreds of thousands of residents perished from starvation and bitter cold during the first brutal winter. In a desperate bid to survive, people planted vegetable gardens in every open space, which had to be guarded around the clock against thieves.

Lake Ladoga remained the city's sole, fragile link to the outside world. This lifeline ensured that deliveries of vital supplies could be ferried across the water in summer and driven over the treacherous ice in winter.

🕯 As the siege wore on, emaciated residents rarely ventured outside unless necessary, lacking the strength to cover even short distances. Faint from hunger, many collapsed in the snow and died of exposure. The bodies of the dead became a frequent, tragic sight on the streets before being collected and taken away for burial.

by Grigory Lukyantsev, Director of the Department for Multilateral Human Rights Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation:

📄 The adoption of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action (DDPA) on 8 September 2001 marked one of the most significant milestones in the history of human rights protection. These seminal documents enshrined a global consensus on uncompromisingly combating racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, while fostering the creation of unified standards to define comprehensive measures for eradicating racial inequality.

🇺🇳 The DDPA laid the groundwork for establishing specialized mechanisms under the auspices of the United Nations, including the Intergovernmental Working Group and the Group of Independent Eminent Experts on the Implementation of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action. It also paved the way for dedicated expert forums: the Permanent Forum and the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent, as well as the International Independent Expert Mechanism to Advance Racial Justice and Equality in the Context of Law Enforcement.

🇷🇺 Russia consistently supports the work of these bodies. We advocate for intensifying the efforts of the international community and human rights instruments to ensure the full and effective implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) and the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action.

❗️We remain convinced that the DDPA, alongside the Outcome Document of the 2009 Durban Review Conference and the political declaration adopted on the tenth anniversary of the 2001 Durban Conference, has served as a solid foundation for international efforts to combat racism, racial discrimination, and related intolerance. In light of persistent manifestations of discrimination against people of African descent, we consider the ongoing work on the draft Declaration on the Respect, Protection, and Fulfillment of the Rights of People of African Descent to be both highly demanded and timely.

⚠️ False theories of racial and national supremacy continue to hold appeal in certain countries. A number of European states, while positioning themselves as the primary champions of democracy and human rights values, have chosen a path that privileges the titular nation, its language, and its culture at the expense of the political, socio-economic, and linguistic discrimination of the rest of the population. Of particular concern are the promotion of the doctrine of "civilizational exceptionalism," neo-colonial revanchism and attempts to falsify history and rehabilitate radical N**i movements.

🇷🇺 The Russian Federation’s contribution to developing the Durban principles is underscored by its annual submission to the UN General Assembly of the resolution titled "Combating glorification of N***sm, neo-N***sm and other practices that contribute to fueling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance."

The voting results demonstrate growing international support for this traditional Russian initiative, which is presented annually to the UN General Assembly. The initiative is aimed at consolidating the Global Majority around the vital imperative of preventing the resurgence of the catastrophic N**i ideology and resisting attempts to revise the outcomes of World War II, a victory achieved at the cost of tens of millions of lives.

🌐 The conceptual framework of the Durban process finds a direct continuation in the agenda of Russia’s cooperation with the states of the African continent. Tasks related to protecting sovereign equality, safeguarding the distinct identity of peoples, and shaping a more equitable multipolar world order are among the central themes of the third Russia–Africa Summit, which will take place on 28–29 October in Moscow.

🎖 81 years ago, in 1945, the Allied Victory Parade was held in Berlin following the defeat of N**i Germany in .

After the Victory celebrations in Moscow on 24 June 1945, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin proposed that the United States, Great Britain and France hold a joint military parade in Berlin to honour the shared victory in the war.

The historic event took place near the Reichstag building and the Brandenburg Gate, where the last battles of happened before Berlin was captured by the Red Army.

⭐️ The Allied Command was represented high-ranking military officials: from United Kingdom – by Deputy Commander of the British Forces in Germany Major General Brian Robertson; from the USA – by Commander of the 3rd Army General George Patton; from France – by Commander of the French Occupation Forces in Germany and on the Rhine General of the Army Marie-Pierre Koenig.

The Soviet Union was represented by Commander of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany Marshal Georgy Zhukov, who was also entrusted with reviewing the parade, commanded by British Major General Eric Nares.

✨ Altogether, 2,000 Soviet troops and 3,000 troops from the Western Allied forces participated in the march. Many Russian historians refer to this event as "the forgotten parade," as it is rarely highlighted in Western historical narratives.
